FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a best available rate?
Best available rate (BAR) is a hotel's standard room rate that any guest can see and book publicly, without a membership number, access code or login, and it is the reference price that member rates, packages and price-match claims are measured against. The label is not a promise of the cheapest price on the market: in Hilton's Price Match Guarantee, member-only prices, corporate and negotiated rates, package rates and other non-public prices all sit outside the set of prices that can be compared. [2]

Key takeaways
- A best available rate is an ordinary room rate offered to the general public: it can be viewed and booked by anyone, without a code, login or membership. [2]
- Price-match schemes use that public price as the benchmark and refuse to match prices that need a membership or affiliation, a corporate deal, a package or a non-public channel. [2]
- A comparison only counts when the room, dates, guests and booking conditions are the same, including refundability and cancellation terms. [2]
- Hilton's current price-match terms apply to claims submitted on or after 20 August 2026. [2]
What makes a hotel rate a best available rate?
Hotels sell the same room at several prices on the same night. The best available rate is the ordinary, publicly posted price: it sits on a channel anyone can reach, it can be booked immediately by anyone who can pay, and it usually carries standard cancellation terms rather than a prepaid commitment. Because it is open to all comers it works as a baseline — loyalty discounts, bundles that add breakfast or parking, and price-match guarantees all need a public number to compare against.
Hilton's Price Match Guarantee sets out the restrictions that take a price out of that public baseline. A qualifying lower price must be viewable and immediately bookable by anyone, must carry no booking limitations or restrictions, must still be available when Hilton reviews the claim, must be in the same currency the hotel uses, and must be at least 1% below Hilton's own price. [2] Prices that need a membership or affiliation to book, such as member-only prices or corporate negotiated business travel prices, are excluded, as are prices that require a login, a credit card number or a code to view, and prices that can only be seen through a mobile app rather than a publicly available website. [2]
How do price-match claims use the best available rate?
Under Hilton's Price Match Guarantee a guest books directly with Hilton first, finds a lower qualifying rate for the same hotel, stay dates, room type and booking terms, and submits a claim within 24 hours; if the claim meets the requirements, Hilton matches the lower rate and gives an additional 25% off the room rate for the stay. [2] Claims cannot be processed once the guest has checked in, in person or digitally, and only one claim may be submitted per booking, with the name and email address on the claim matching those on the reservation. [2]
The comparison must be like for like, and Hilton gives these examples of differences that would disqualify a claim: [2]
| Comparison point | Example |
|---|---|
| Room type | A king room against a room with two queen beds |
| View | An ocean view against a partial ocean view |
| Location | A room in one tower against a room in another tower |
| Floor | A high-floor room against a room with no floor specified |
| Included amenities | A $25 property credit against free breakfast |
| Stay dates | 26–31 January against 26–30 January, or two split reservations instead of one |
| Number of guests | Two adults against one adult |
| Booking terms | Fully refundable against non-refundable; a two-day against a four-day cancellation window; a deposit required against no deposit; pay in advance against pay later |
Booking conditions therefore matter as much as the number itself: under these terms a non-refundable prepaid rate cannot be used to challenge a flexible best available rate, and a longer or shorter cancellation window breaks the comparison. [2] The same logic underlies rate parity clauses, which police the gap between a hotel's public price and the prices shown elsewhere.
How does it relate to member rates and packages?
Loyalty pricing is normally framed as an improvement on the public rate rather than a replacement for it, and price-match schemes keep the two apart. Hilton's terms exclude special member rates such as AAA and AARP, corporate and negotiated rates, travel package rates and non-public rates, together with rates tied to a special event or meeting — a sports tournament, wedding block or corporate event with a discount code, for instance. [2] A price also drops out if the website does not reveal the brand, hotel or room type until the reservation is completed. [2]
Marriott Bonvoy's programme rules approach the same idea from the earning side: charges for “Qualifying Rates for Stays” count among the room charges on which members earn points, so the rate a guest books affects what the stay earns. [3] The programme's sign-up banner markets membership with the promise of “our lowest rates, all the time”, positioning the member rate under the public one. [3] Marriott Bonvoy also lists a Best Rate Guarantee among its guest information pages. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Not a lowest-price promise. A best available rate is a public benchmark, not a guarantee that no cheaper price exists anywhere; Hilton's terms exclude whole categories of cheaper prices from matching. [2]
- Date and market scope. Hilton's current price-match terms apply to claims submitted on or after 20 August 2026. [2]
- Excluded properties. All Hampton by Hilton hotels and hotels operating under the Small Luxury Hotels brand in the People's Republic of China are currently excluded from the guarantee, as are all Partner Accommodations, including the Small Luxury Hotels brand, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. [2]
- Changing the booking. An approved match applies only to the booking as approved; adding guests, reducing the length of stay or changing the dates or room type allows the hotel to re-evaluate and cancel the approved price match. [2]
- Claim handling. Hilton may deny claims that appear fraudulent, abusive or designed to manipulate the programme, and may deny a claim where the comparison channel cannot confirm an immediate, valid reservation at the advertised price; it may also modify or discontinue the guarantee at any time. [2]
- Programme scope. This page covers the rate concept and the way Hilton and Marriott Bonvoy treat public, member and package rates; neither company's rules are extended here to other hotel groups.
Frequently asked questions
Is the best available rate always the lowest price?
No. It is the lowest publicly bookable price a hotel posts, and cheaper prices can exist in channels that price-match schemes will not accept, such as member-only, corporate negotiated, package and non-public rates. [2]
Can a member rate be used to claim a price match?
Not under Hilton's Price Match Guarantee: special member rates such as AAA and AARP, corporate and negotiated rates, travel package rates and non-public rates are not eligible, and neither are prices that need a membership or affiliation to book. [2]
Do opaque or hidden-brand prices count as a best available rate?
No. Hilton's terms exclude websites that do not reveal the brand, hotel or room type until the reservation is completed, and require the comparison price to be bookable by anyone without restrictions. [2]
What happens if a booking is changed after a price match is approved?
The matched rate applies only to the booking as approved; if the guest adds guests, shortens the stay or changes the dates or room type, the hotel may re-evaluate and cancel the approved price match. [2]
Does booking a qualifying rate affect loyalty earning?
At Marriott Bonvoy, charges for “Qualifying Rates for Stays” count among the room charges on which members earn points, so the rate attached to the reservation matters for earning as well as for pricing. [3]
