FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is booking-platform rewards posting?

Booking-platform rewards posting is the moment a reward currency or a tier credit tied to a booking becomes usable in a loyalty account, rather than merely promised by a reservation. A confirmed booking is not the same as a credited one: rewards are normally treated as earned only once the underlying stay or transaction has been completed and paid, and only if the channel and the rate were eligible in the first place. [5]

Key takeaways

  • A reservation alone does not put rewards in an account: Hilton Honors treats points tied to a stay as earned only when the stay has been completed, fully paid and added to the member's account. [5]
  • The booking channel decides whether an earning event exists at all — Hilton lists third-party website bookings among ineligible stays, whatever rate was paid. [5]
  • Claim deadlines differ by programme: Marriott Bonvoy accepts missing-credit requests up to one year after the activity, Hilton Honors up to six months. [4] [5]

Which bookings count as eligible for rewards?

Posting starts with eligibility, not with the stay. Hilton Honors requires a member to be a registered, paying and staying guest at a participating hotel and to meet all of the conditions in its terms before points or tier credit are earned for a hotel stay. [5] Its list of ineligible stays includes wholesale and tour operator packages, contracted crew rates, travel agency discount rates, stays booked on HiltonGetaways.com, and third-party website bookings irrespective of the rate paid. [5] So-called opaque bookings, where the brand and the specific hotel may not be known at the time of purchase, are also excluded. [5] On-property benefits follow the same logic: they are not awarded for reservations booked through a non-Hilton-direct booking channel, a third-party website or a non-designated distribution system. [5]

Marriott Bonvoy attaches the condition to the member's details as well as to the booking. Qualifying charges count only where the member provides their membership number at the time of reservation or at check-in, stays in one of the reserved guest rooms as the registered guest, and pays for the charges. [4] Elite Night Credits — the credit that counts toward elite status — are earned only for a night within a qualifying stay. [4]

When do rewards become available after a booking or stay?

Stay-based credit. Hilton Honors says points offered in conjunction with specific stays are considered earned when the stay has been completed, fully paid and added to the member's account, and that points are not available for reward redemption before that has happened. [5] Two checks therefore sit between the reservation and the balance: the stay must actually be taken, and the folio must be settled. [5] A guaranteed reservation that ends in a no-show earns no points, eligible spend, stay credit or night credit toward elite status, whether or not the member's card is charged for part of the reserved stay. [5]

Transaction-based credit. Where points come from a purchase rather than a stay, timing is stated in days. Marriott Bonvoy says it may take up to ten days after each transaction at a participating outlet for points to be posted, and that a member may contact member support if the points have still not posted after ten days. [4]

Tier credit on a different clock. Tier credit does not always scale with the currency earned on the same booking. Hilton Honors awards stay and night credit toward elite status for one room only, even where base points can be earned for up to four rooms on a single folio. [5] At Marriott Bonvoy, an elite night credit is earned only on a night during a qualifying stay. [4]

How long do you have to claim missing rewards?

Both programmes expect the member to chase a credit that has not appeared, and both measure the deadline from the activity itself rather than from the date the booking was made. [4] [5]

Missing-credit request windows
ProgrammeRequest deadlineCredit before enrolment
Marriott BonvoyWithin one year of the applicable activityActivity completed in the 30 days before enrolment, if requested within one year
Hilton HonorsWithin six months of the date of activityStays occurring within 30 days before enrolment

Marriott Bonvoy adds that such requests remain subject to the applicable posting timelines, request channels, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures. [4] Hilton Honors asks for a readable copy of the hotel folio with the request, and warns that inadequate or altered documentation may lead to the credit being denied. [5]

What can delay or reverse a posting?

  • Programme corrections. Marriott Bonvoy may correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile points, qualifying nights, status, benefits or transactions at any time in its sole discretion, including where a benefit was issued in error, the member was not eligible, or fraudulent activity is suspected. [4] It may also cancel, suspend, withhold, reverse or deduct points and benefits where it believes the programme rules have been broken. [4]
  • Cancelled awards. At Marriott Bonvoy, an award redeemed before points forfeiture stays valid unless it is cancelled after the points expiration date; if that happens and no qualifying activity has extended the expiration date, the points used for the award expire. [4]
  • Disputed accruals. Where Hilton Honors or a marketing partner improperly denies an accrual of points or a benefit, its liability is limited to the equivalent value of that accrual as determined solely by Hilton Honors. [5]
  • Discount-only bookings. This term covers programmes that issue a currency or credit to a member account. A booking benefit that only lowers the price and creates no account balance falls outside the definition, because there is no posting event to track.
