FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a breakfast benefit?

Breakfast benefit is the elite hotel perk that gives a member a complimentary morning meal, or a food-and-beverage credit in place of it, at a participating property. In the programme terms checked it is not a standalone promise: Marriott Bonvoy refers to “the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift benefit”, while Hilton Honors lists “complimentary continental breakfast OR a Daily Food & Beverage Credit (varies by brand and region)” among its MyWay on-property benefits. [1] [2]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Breakfast is delivered inside a wider elite benefit, not as a separate line item: Marriott Bonvoy attaches a breakfast option to the Elite Welcome Gift, and Hilton Honors offers a choice between continental breakfast and a daily Food & Beverage Credit under MyWay. [1] [2]
  • The format is not uniform. Hilton states the choice varies by brand and region, and that not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels. [2]
  • Lounge access can cancel out the credit: at Hilton, members with complimentary access to an Executive Lounge that serves breakfast seven days a week are not eligible for the daily Food & Beverage Credit. [2]
  • Booking channel matters as much as status: Hilton withholds on-property benefits on reservations made through third-party or non-designated channels and on ineligible stays. [2]

How the benefit is described

Marriott Bonvoy. The programme rules, updated October 2026, mention breakfast in the section on properties that participate only in a limited capacity, where they refer to “the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift benefit”. [1] The same section warns that specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available at such properties even where the property is not explicitly flagged as excluded where the benefit is described. [1] For what a particular brand, collection or experience actually provides, the rules point readers to the separate Supplemental Terms rather than to a single table of choices. [1]

Hilton Honors. The terms, effective 15 July 2026, list “complimentary continental breakfast OR a Daily Food & Beverage Credit (varies by brand and region)” among the MyWay on-property benefits. [2] Both the Gold and Diamond benefit lists invite the member to choose a MyWay on-property benefit, with a link to the choices published for each hotel brand within the portfolio; the Silver Elite list in the same document does not include that choice. [2] Hilton also states plainly that not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels. [2]

Who qualifies

Hilton requires the member to be the registered, paying and staying guest to qualify for on-property amenities, and those amenities are not transferable to any other individual, including to other Hilton Honors members. [2] The reservation must also be confirmed through one of the listed channels: an official Hilton brand or Hilton Honors website, the Hilton reservations phone line, the Hilton Honors or Hilton mobile app, the hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or a designated GDS (Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or SABRE). [2]

Hilton says on-property benefits are not awarded on reservations booked through a non-Hilton-direct channel or a non-designated GDS, a third-party website or any other channel; on rates sold on “opaque” websites where the brand and hotel are unknown until booking; on third-party hotel or travel packages not booked through an eligible channel; or on ineligible stays as defined in its accrual section, unless the hotel contract includes specific benefits. [2] That ineligible-stay list covers wholesale and tour-operator packages, contracted crew rates, travel-agency discount rates, packages exclusively for casino player-card holders, complimentary or barter rooms, and third-party website bookings irrespective of the rate paid. [2]

On the Marriott side, the rules reserve to the Company the right to correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile points, nights, status and benefits at any time, including where a benefit was issued in error or the member was not eligible. [1] For the wider picture of how tier levels are earned, see the hotel status qualification guide and the term elite status.

Lounge breakfast and the credit

At Hilton, the lounge route works differently by tier. A Gold member and one additional guest receive complimentary Executive Floor Lounge access only if the member is upgraded to the Executive Floor or to a room type that confers lounge access. [2] Diamond members receive complimentary lounge access for themselves and up to one additional registered guest even without a room upgrade. [2] In both cases, a member with complimentary access to a lounge that provides complimentary breakfast seven days a week is not eligible for the daily Food & Beverage Credit. [2]

That lounge access excludes executive suites, villas, specialty accommodation, floors and towers, and “Club” accommodation types — named examples include the Sakura Club at Conrad Washington, DC, Club Signia at Signia by Hilton hotels, the Citrus Club at the Arizona Biltmore, and the Enclave and Club category rooms at All-Inclusive resorts — unless the initial booking was also an Enclave-level room. [2] The lounge guest policy term covers who may accompany a member.

Exceptions and limits

  • A named Marriott exclusion. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas — a non-branded participating property with limited participation — limited benefits are provided as described in the relevant sections, except that the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift is not available. [1]
  • Separate rulebooks. Marriott says several property categories participate in a unique capacity under their own terms of service, including All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resorts, MGM Collection hotels, Homes & Villas, Design Hotels and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and that where specific terms apply they control over the general brand list. [1] This is the pattern described in brand exception.
  • Discretion and resort fees. Hilton states that amenities are offered solely at the discretion of Hilton Honors and the participating hotels, and that where a resort fee is required, members should check with the hotel about the amenities it includes. [2]
  • Location-based limits. Hilton notes that member benefits and rewards may not be available if prohibited by law or regulation in the member’s country of residence or at the property’s location. [2]
  • If a benefit is refused. Where Hilton Honors or a marketing partner improperly denies an accrual or benefit, Hilton says its liability is limited to the equivalent value of that accrual or benefit as it determines solely. [2]
