FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a cash-back credit card?
A cash-back credit card is a credit card that returns a percentage of the money spent on eligible purchases to the cardholder, normally as cash back that can be taken as a statement credit or another cash-equivalent reward. Cash-back cards generally follow one of three designs — a flat rate on every purchase, a higher rate inside fixed categories such as travel, dining, gas or groceries, or a higher rate in categories that rotate through the year — as Discover sets out on its cash-back card pages. Key takeaways
- A cash-back card pays a percentage of eligible spending, and Discover groups the designs into flat-rate, fixed-category and rotating-category cards. [3]
- Bonus rates usually carry conditions: Discover describes its 5% rate as applying to spending at different places each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum, when the cardholder activates. [3]
- How the reward is delivered depends on the issuer — Discover lists statement credit, a cash deposit into a bank account, gift cards and payment for purchases among the possible options. [3]
- A points card that can be turned into cash is a different product: Chase sets one cent per point for cash, gift card and travel redemptions under its Ultimate Rewards agreement. [4]
How does a cash-back credit card work?
Cash back is a rebate calculated on what the card is used for. The percentage is the headline number, while the remainder of the card's terms decides which purchases count, how much spending earns the higher rate, and what the cardholder must do to qualify. [3] Discover's own explanation is that a cash-back card lets the cardholder earn cash back rewards as a percentage of the amount spent, and that some cards offer a higher level of cash back in select categories. [3]
The same page separates the designs into three groups:
- Flat rate. The same percentage on every purchase, which Discover illustrates with examples of 1% or 1.5% cash back. [3]
- Rewards categories. A higher rate within named categories such as travel, dining, gas or groceries, with a lower rate on other purchases. [3]
- Rotating categories. A higher rate in categories that change through the year, with other purchases earning the standard rewards rate. [3]
How the value reaches the cardholder varies by issuer. Discover says the options depend on the card issuer and may include a statement credit, a cash deposit into a bank account, gift cards, and payment for purchases. [3]
What do Discover's cash-back cards pay?
Discover's card range shows the three designs in use, and how a bonus rate is tied to a cap. [3]
| Card | Standard rate | Bonus rate | Annual fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover it Cash Back Card | 1% on all other purchases | 5% at different places each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum when the cardholder activates | $0 |
| Discover it Chrome Gas & Restaurants Card | Unlimited 1% on all other purchases | 2% at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, earned automatically | $0 |
| Discover it Secured Cash Back Card | 1% on all other purchases | 5% at different places each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum when the cardholder activates | $0 |
| NHL® Discover it Card | 1% on all other purchases | 5% at different places each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum when the cardholder activates | $0 |
Every card in the range is listed with no annual fee, and Discover states the purchase rate on the Discover it Cash Back Card as a 0% introductory APR for 15 months, then a variable APR of 17.74% to 26.74%. [3]
These cards are also marketed with "Unlimited Cashback Match": Discover matches all the cash back earned in the first year, dollar for dollar, automatically and without a limit. [3] The terms define the match period as the day the new account is approved through its first 365 days, with the matched amount added to the rewards account within two billing periods; the offer is exclusively for new cardholders, may not be available in the future, and has no purchase minimums. [3] Discover does not match rewards processed after the match period ends, statement credits, rewards transferred from a Discover or Capital One checking or other deposit account, or rewards on accounts that are closed. [3]
What limits and exclusions apply to category cash back?
Bonus categories are narrower than they look. On the Discover it Chrome Gas & Restaurants Card the 2% rate covers the first $1,000 in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each calendar quarter; quarters begin on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, and spending above the cap — like all other purchases — earns 1%. [3] On the rotating-category cards the 5% rate is stated as applying up to the quarterly maximum when the cardholder activates, so activation is part of the bonus. [3]
Eligibility follows how the merchant is classified. Discover says merchants are assigned a merchant category code, so a purchase that looks like dining or fuel may not earn the bonus: food trucks and food carts may use a merchandise code, and restaurants inside department stores or hotels may use a merchandise or hotel code instead of a dining code. [3] Third-party payment accounts and digital wallet transactions may not earn additional cash back if the technology does not provide sufficient transaction details. [3] Gas stations affiliated with supermarkets, supercenters and wholesale clubs may not be eligible, and restaurants inside or affiliated with another business, along with bakeries, may not qualify. [3] The 2% categories require purchases from merchants in the U.S. [3]
Rewards are calculated on net purchases, meaning purchases minus credits or returns. [3] Cash advances, balance transfers, transfers from deposit accounts and checks used to access the account are not purchases and earn nothing, and the portion of a purchase paid with rewards, or with cash received at the point of sale, earns nothing. [3] Timing matters too: the purchase transaction date must be on or before the last day of the offer or promotion, and for online purchases the merchant's transaction date may be the ship date. [3] Rewards are added to the account within two billing periods. [3]
Is a points card redeemed for cash the same as cash back?
The two mechanics differ even when both end as a credit on the statement. A cash-back card generates the reward as a percentage of eligible spending. [3] A points card fixes the cash value at redemption: under Chase's Ultimate Rewards agreement for the Ink Business Preferred card, points can be redeemed for cash through an account statement credit or an electronic deposit into an eligible Chase account located in the United States, and each point is worth one cent — 100 points equal $1 — when used for cash, gift cards or travel, while other reward options may be worth more or less. [4]
Expiry rules also sit with the programme. Chase says points do not expire as long as the account is open, but that all points are lost immediately if account status changes or the account is closed for misuse, fraud or the other reasons listed in the agreement, and points lost that way are not reinstated unless Chase has made an error. [4] If the account is closed for any other reason, the cardholder has at least 30 days from the closure date to use the points, after which unused points are lost unless the law limits that, in which case they are automatically redeemed for cash as a statement credit. [4] Discover's page, by contrast, says its rewards do not expire for the life of the account, while noting that other cards may have cash back rewards that expire. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Activation. Discover describes the rotating 5% rate as applying up to the quarterly maximum when the cardholder activates the programme, so the bonus is conditional on activation. [3]
- Caps. The Chrome card's 2% rate stops at $1,000 in combined gas and restaurant purchases each calendar quarter, after which the rate is 1%. [3] The rotating 5% rate is capped at a quarterly maximum set for the card. [3]
- Secured version. The Discover it Secured Cash Back Card requires a refundable deposit of $49, $99 or $200 depending on creditworthiness, which unlocks credit lines starting at $200, and carries a 29.24% purchase APR; Discover says no credit score is required to apply, though it may use credit scores if available. [3]
- First-year match. Cashback Match is exclusively for new cardholders, may not be available in the future, and excludes statement credits and rewards on closed accounts. [3] At Chase, points are lost immediately if an account is closed for misuse, fraud or the listed reasons. [4]

Does cash back expire?
Discover says its rewards do not expire for the life of the account and notes that other cards may have cash back rewards that expire. [3] Chase's points do not expire while the account is open, but are lost if the account is closed for misuse, fraud or the listed reasons. [4]
