FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a credit limit?
A credit limit (also credit line or spending limit) is the maximum balance an issuer allows an account holder to owe at any one time on a revolving credit card. It sets the ceiling for new purchases and for any balance carried between statements, it is fixed for the individual account rather than for the card product in general, and unsecured card requirements vary by issuer. Key takeaways
- A credit limit is an account-level ceiling, not a feature shared by everyone holding the same card, and it can be changed: Barclaycard lists "Change your credit limit" among the tasks an existing customer handles through online account servicing. [3]
- On a secured card the limit is tied to a refundable deposit: Capital One sets the deposit at $49, $99 or $200 depending on creditworthiness. [1]
- Welcome-offer thresholds are fixed dollar amounts — $4,000 in three months on Capital One Venture Rewards and Venture X Rewards, $500 on VentureOne Rewards, Quicksilver Rewards and Savor Rewards, $100 on the student cards — so a low limit can stretch the qualifying period. [1]
- Charge cards sit outside the concept, because their balance is due in full at each statement rather than revolving.
How does a credit limit work?
A revolving card lets the holder spend up to the limit, repay part of the balance, and use the freed room again. The limit therefore caps what can be owed at one moment rather than what can be spent across a year. How much of the ceiling is in use at a given time is what credit utilisation describes, and a balance carried past the due date is charged at the card's APR.
Limits belong to accounts, not to card designs. Barclaycard, a trading name of Barclays Bank UK PLC, lists "Change your credit limit" among the ways an existing customer manages an account online [3]; the mechanics of asking for more room are set out under credit limit increase.
Secured cards make the link between a deposit and a limit explicit. Capital One describes its Platinum Secured card with a refundable security deposit set at $49, $99 or $200 based on creditworthiness, paired with the account's credit limit [1]. Once the account qualifies, the deposit is returned and the account becomes unsecured, while all other card terms and features remain the same [1].
Why does a credit limit matter for large spends and welcome bonuses?
Welcome offers are normally released after a fixed amount of spending inside a fixed window, not as a percentage of the limit. As of 18 October 2026, Capital One lists 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 of purchases in the first three months on Venture Rewards and Venture X Rewards, 20,000 bonus miles after $500 in the first three months on VentureOne Rewards, a $200 cash bonus after $500 in the first three months on Quicksilver Rewards and Savor Rewards, and $50 bonuses after $100 in the first three months on the Quicksilver and Savor student cards [1]. Because those figures are absolute, an account whose limit sits below the threshold has to make payments inside the window so the qualifying spending fits under the ceiling, and a single large purchase can absorb most of the available room at once.
Once the requirement is met, Capital One applies the bonus to the rewards balance within two billing cycles [1]. Each bonus is one-time, and earlier new-cardmember bonuses on the same card or a related one in the past 48 months can make an applicant ineligible [1].
A limit is not an earning cap. The BJ's One and BJ's One+ Mastercard accounts state that there is no cap to the amount that can be earned on eligible purchases and that rewards last for the life of the account, with a $10 minimum rewards balance before redemption [1]. Rules that do restrict earning are covered under earning cap.
Do charge cards have a credit limit?
A charge card runs on a different model: the statement balance is payable in full rather than carried as a revolving balance, so no revolving ceiling of the kind described above applies. That is why charge cards sit outside the credit-limit concept and are described separately under charge card. On a revolving account, by contrast, the holder can see a defined ceiling, decide how much of it to use, and repay to reopen it.
Exceptions and limits of the concept
- A security deposit is not the limit. On Capital One's Platinum Secured card the deposit is refundable and is returned once the account qualifies, at which point the account becomes unsecured and all other card terms and features stay the same [1].
- No cap on rewards. The BJ's One and BJ's One+ accounts state that there is no cap on what can be earned on eligible purchases and that rewards do not expire while the account is open [1].
- No typical amounts. Limits and approvals are assessed on the individual account, and unsecured card requirements vary by issuer [2], so the ceiling on one card says nothing about another.
- Charge cards. Where the whole balance falls due each statement there is no revolving balance to cap, so nothing here should be read as a rule for charge cards.
Frequently asked questions
Is a credit limit the same as a security deposit?
No. On a secured account the deposit is refundable and is returned once the account qualifies, and the account then becomes unsecured while the other card terms and features remain unchanged [1].
Can a credit limit stop me earning a welcome bonus?
Not directly, but the spending thresholds are fixed dollar amounts — $4,000 in the first three months on Capital One Venture Rewards and Venture X Rewards, or $500 in the first three months on VentureOne Rewards, Quicksilver Rewards and Savor Rewards [1] — so the qualifying spending has to fit under the ceiling within the window, which may mean paying the balance down during it.
Does spending up to my credit limit reduce the rewards I earn?
Not on the BJ's One and BJ's One+ Mastercard accounts, which state that there is no cap to the amount that can be earned on eligible purchases and that rewards last for the life of the account, with a $10 minimum rewards balance before redemption [1].
How do I change my credit limit?
Barclaycard lists "Change your credit limit" among the tasks an existing customer completes through online account servicing [3]; any change applies to that account alone.
