FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What are hotel award blackout dates?
Hotel award blackout dates are the dates on which a hotel loyalty programme will not sell award nights — rooms paid for with points — even though the property is open and selling rooms for cash. The phrase also covers the quieter inventory restrictions that decide which room types, rates and properties can be booked with points at all. Hotel programmes generally set these as availability conditions rather than a published calendar of blocked dates: award nights are tied to particular room types at properties that take part, and the programme keeps the right to change what is offered. Key takeaways
- Hilton Honors sells all-points stays as Standard Room Reward Stays, and each hotel defines its own standard room, so the room type comes before the date. [1]
- Marriott Bonvoy names award availability among the things it may change, limit or suspend with or without notice, even where a change affects the ability to obtain an award. [2]
- Some properties sit outside a programme's redemption network, or take part only in a limited or unique capacity, so certain awards cannot be booked there at all. [2]
- A points booking does not always carry the same guarantees as a cash booking: Hilton's 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee excludes reservations paid in part or in full with Points or free night certificates. [1]
How do hotel award blackout dates and inventory restrictions work?
An award night is a room, on one date, drawn from inventory the property controls. Two conditions have to line up: the hotel must release rooms to the loyalty programme for those dates, and the room must be of a type the programme lets members pay for with points. When either condition fails, the hotel can be open and selling rooms for cash while the same night cannot be bought with points.
Restrictions therefore appear at three levels. At date level, no award inventory is released for a particular night. At room-type level, awards are confined to base rooms while suites and specialty accommodation sit outside the programme. At property level, the hotel either does not take part in the programme or takes part in a limited capacity. Programme terms usually frame all three as availability language and keep the right to vary it: Hilton states that hotels within the Hilton Portfolio and other participating properties are subject to change at any time, without notice [1], and Marriott Bonvoy lists Award availability among the elements it may change, limit, modify or suspend with or without notice, even if a change affects the value of points or the ability to obtain certain awards [2].
What does Hilton Honors publish about award room availability?
Hilton Honors ties all-points bookings to one product, the Standard Room Reward Stay. The programme's terms state that a Standard Room is defined by each hotel and is subject to availability at participating hotels within the Hilton Portfolio [1]. That leaves two decisions with the property: which room types count as standard, and whether any of them are open to points on a given night. Hilton also notes that benefits and services offered at participating hotels may vary [1].
Hilton lists the 5th Night Free benefit among its elite tier benefits for all-points stays: for every Standard Room Reward Stay of five or more nights using all Points, every fifth night is free, up to four free nights per stay, applying to five consecutive nights within the same all-points stay at the same property, up to 20 nights, when confirmed at the time of booking [1]. If the free night is declined, the reservation is cancelled or the member checks out early, the free night is forfeited, and the benefit has no cash or Point value [1]. It does not apply to paid stays or to Points & Money Rewards stays [1].
Peak periods enter Hilton's terms through a separate mechanism. Hilton defines "Extraordinary Demand Dates" as dates chosen by the hotel and Hilton Honors in their sole discretion that are consistently popular reservation dates for guests, such as dates during major events in the area or New Year's Eve [1]. The 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee does not apply on those dates [1], and it also does not apply to reservations paid for in part or in full by Hilton Honors Points or by free night certificates issued by Hilton [1]. More broadly, Hilton reserves the right to add, modify, delete or otherwise change its rules, benefits and rewards, including continued availability of rewards and reward types, with or without notice [1].
What restrictions does Marriott Bonvoy publish for award stays?
Marriott Bonvoy's programme rules place award availability explicitly in the company's hands: the Company may change, limit, modify, supplement, amend, suspend or cancel the programme, its rules, award availability, redemption levels and rules for redeeming points, with or without notice, even if such changes affect the value of points or the ability to obtain certain awards [2].
Property coverage is the second filter. Marriott states that specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available at experiences or properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity, even where the property is not explicitly identified as excluded [2]. A set of brands and properties does not participate at all unless expressly stated, including Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, City Express Rio de Janeiro Barra da Tijuca, Grand Residences by Marriott, Mayfair-London, the Rotary House Hotel at Marriott Conference Centers in Houston, Marriott Vacation Club at The Empire Place in Bangkok, The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast, and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore [2].
Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas shows how partial participation reads. Members may redeem points at The Coral at Atlantis, The Royal at Atlantis and The Cove at Atlantis, and award redemption stays include the standard room rate and room tax only, with extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges left to the member [2]. The Reef at Atlantis, The Beach at Atlantis and Harborside at Atlantis do not participate, and points cannot be redeemed for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com [2].
Two clauses reach nights already booked. If a participating property leaves the programme, awards are no longer valid after the exit date, even where the reservation was made before that date [2]. And where an event beyond the company's reasonable control affects a property, applicable benefits, guarantees and awards may be modified, suspended, made unavailable or ineligible without liability [2].
Inside the participating network, Marriott describes award types that exist only where a hotel offers them: free night awards are redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide with varying point values, stays start at 12,000 points a night as of 18 October 2026, PointSavers rates offer up to 20% off at participating hotels, cash-plus-points rates appear only at participating hotels that display them, and room upgrades are available at select hotels and resorts [6]. Nightly Upgrade Awards are available to Gold Elite members and above and are requested after booking [6].
What should you check before transferring points for a hotel stay?
Work through the points at which programme rules can close an award night, before moving a balance into a hotel currency.
- Is the property in the programme? Confirm the hotel is a participating property and not on a non-participating list [2]; Hilton notes that participating hotels can change without notice [1].
- Is the room type award-eligible? Hilton's points product is the standard room, defined hotel by hotel [1].
- Does the award type exist there? PointSavers, cash-plus-points and upgrade awards each appear only at participating or select hotels [6].
- Do the dates fall in a designated demand period? Hilton lets the hotel and Hilton Honors set Extraordinary Demand Dates, which sit outside the 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee [1].
- What are the change rules? Both programmes keep the right to alter award availability, so plan a fallback before committing a balance [1] [2].
Limits and exceptions
- No blocked-date list does not mean open space. An award night still needs a room released to the programme in an eligible room type, so a night can be closed to points while the hotel sells rooms for cash [1] [2].
- Two separate filters. A hotel may accept points generally but not for the room you want, because Hilton's standard room is defined by each hotel [1], and some Marriott award types are limited to select hotels or to Gold Elite members and above [6].
- Different guarantees for points. Hilton's 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee excludes points and free-night-certificate reservations and does not apply on Extraordinary Demand Dates [1].
- Coverage can shrink after booking. Marriott awards stop being valid if the property exits the programme, even for reservations already made [2].
- Extraordinary circumstances. Events beyond a company's reasonable control can make awards unavailable or ineligible without liability [2].
Frequently asked questions
Why can a hotel be open but not bookable with points?
Award nights are limited to eligible room types at participating properties and remain subject to availability, so when those rooms are not released to the programme the night exists for cash only. [1] [2]
Which Hilton Honors stays can be booked with points?
All-points bookings are Standard Room Reward Stays, and a standard room is defined by each hotel and subject to availability at participating hotels within the Hilton Portfolio. [1]
What happens if a Marriott hotel leaves the programme after I book?
Awards are no longer valid after the date the property exits the programme, even if the reservation was made before that date. [2]
Do point stays get the same reservation guarantees as paid stays?
Not at Hilton: the 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee does not apply to reservations paid in part or in full with Hilton Honors Points or Hilton free night certificates, or on Extraordinary Demand Dates. [1]
Are all rooms at a participating hotel available on points?
No. Hilton's points product is the standard room, defined by each hotel, and Marriott limits some award types to select hotels and to Gold Elite members and above. [1] [6]
