FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a points advance?

A points advance is a hotel loyalty feature that lets a member lock in an award stay before the points for it are sitting in the account, on the understanding that the points are paid in by a deadline the programme sets. It turns one redemption into two steps — hold the room first, settle the points later — and it matters because award space is often the scarce part of a stay rather than the points themselves. Where the points are already held, programmes can be generous about how they are spent: Hilton Honors, for example, lets members book free nights with any combination of Points and money and states that there are no blackout dates. [4]

Key takeaways

  • A points advance splits a redemption in two: the programme confirms the award first, and the member pays the points into the account afterwards by an agreed date.
  • Three details decide how a points advance behaves — the largest shortfall a programme permits, the deadline for paying the points, and what happens to the booking if the points arrive late. Each is set programme by programme and can change.
  • Hilton Honors members can book free nights using any combination of Points and money, and Hilton states that there are no blackout dates. [4]
  • Hilton Honors treats Points earned from a stay as earned only once the stay is completed, fully paid and added to the account, and they are not available for reward redemption before that. [3]

How does a points advance work?

A points advance borrows against points the member expects to hold later. The member chooses the hotel and the dates, the reservation is confirmed against a balance that does not yet cover the full award price, and the difference is carried as an amount owed to the programme. Nothing about the room changes; only the timing of the points does.

The deadline carries the risk. If the points are in the account by the date the programme sets, the booking turns into an ordinary award stay. If they are not, the programme applies its own remedy — cancelling the reservation, repricing it, or whatever else its rules allow — so the deadline is the clause worth reading before relying on the arrangement.

Timing is what makes the feature useful. Award space can appear while a member's points are still in transit from another programme or while a balance is being topped up, and a points advance keeps the room in the meantime. It protects the reservation, not the price: the number of points an award costs follows the programme's hotel award chart rather than the date the hold was placed, so a chart change between the hold and the payment date is worth watching.

What is the difference between a points advance and an award hold?

An award hold keeps award space while a member moves points already owned — typically a transfer that has not yet posted — and it lapses if the points do not arrive in time. A points advance goes further: the member does not hold the points at all when the booking is confirmed, and the programme agrees to be paid in points later. The distinction matters at the booking stage, because a hold protects a reservation for hours or days, while a points advance runs to a payment date the programme chooses.

What do the Hilton Honors terms say about Points and reward stays?

The Hilton Honors Worldwide, LLC programme terms currently in force took effect on 15 July 2026 and supersede all earlier versions. [3] Hilton also publishes separate terms for members who regularly reside in Chinese Mainland with citizenship of the People's Republic of China. [3]

Hilton's member pages describe how Points are earned and used, including booking free nights with any combination of Points and money and the statement that there are no blackout dates. [4]

For Points earned from hotel stays, the terms are precise about timing: Points offered in connection with a stay are considered earned when the stay has been completed, fully paid and added to the member's account, and Points are not available for reward redemption before that has happened. [3] A member waiting on credit from a current stay therefore cannot treat those Points as spendable until the stay closes and the credit posts.

Hilton's member pages also list routes for adding to a balance ahead of a reward stay: buying Points, pooling Points with other members, transferring Points to friends and family, receiving gifted Points, and converting points and miles from other airline, rail and mileage programmes into Hilton Honors Points. [4]

Once an award has been taken, a later forfeiture of Points does not undo it. Hilton Honors says any Reward redeemed before Points are forfeited — a hotel reservation booked or a car rental voucher obtained — is still valid. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Inactivity forfeiture. A Hilton Honors member with no eligible activity in any 24 consecutive month period is subject to forfeiture of all accumulated Points and may be removed from the programme. The qualifying actions are a stay at a participating hotel, earning Points through Hilton or a third-party source including a co-branded credit card, buying Points, or donating Points through the Hilton Honors Giving Back Program. [3]
  • Bookings taken before forfeiture. A Reward redeemed before Points are forfeited remains valid. [3]
  • No ownership of the balance. Accrued Points, Reward certificates and confirmations do not constitute property of the member, and except as specifically provided they are not transferable. [3]
  • Rules can change. Hilton Honors reserves the right to add, modify, delete or otherwise change rules, procedures, conditions, benefits or Rewards with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of Points already accumulated. [3]
  • Scope limit. The rules above are Hilton Honors rules only. Whether a programme offers a points-advance-style hold, how far a balance may go negative, when the points fall due and what a cancellation costs are set by each programme's own terms and change over time.
