FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a Reward Flight Saver?
Reward Flight Saver is a reward-seat pricing pattern in which a traveller pays one fixed cash amount plus a set number of miles, instead of paying the full mileage price and then adding taxes, fees and carrier charges on top. The best-documented example is the Reward Flight sold by The British Airways Club, where the Avios amount and the cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges are both fixed at the time of booking. Key takeaways
- A saver band fixes both halves of the price. British Airways describes its Reward Flights as offering a fixed Avios amount and a fixed cash amount to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges. [1] [3]
- The cash element is not one programme-wide fee: British Airways says the Avios and cash price of a Reward Flight depends on date, destination and class of travel. [3]
- The fixed cash treatment belongs to British Airways-operated flying. On Reward Flights taken with Iberia, American Airlines and the oneworld alliance, British Airways says the cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed. [3]
- Peak and off-peak dates decide which Avios amount applies, and the same split feeds into upgrade pricing. [1] [3]
How a saver band differs from a standard award
On an ordinary award ticket the mileage price and the cash price are two separate calculations: the seat is priced in miles, and the airport taxes, fees and carrier charges are added afterwards and can move when governments or airports change them. A saver band bundles the two halves together. The programme sets one flat cash amount that already includes those charges, pairs it with a set mileage price, and quotations therefore show a single, stable combination that the traveller can compare before booking.
Within The British Airways Club, tickets booked with Avios are called Reward Flights, and they follow exactly this structure. British Airways says a Reward Flight is made up of an Avios amount plus a fixed cash amount to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges, and describes the cash element as a low, flat fee. [3] A separate page of the same programme says Reward Flights offer a fixed Avios amount and a fixed cash amount. [1]
The club also sells designated Avios-only flights: services operated by British Airways and its subsidiary Euro Flyer that are bookable only as Reward Flights, for direct journeys, to members of The British Airways Club. [3] If you would rather choose how many Avios to spend and cover the rest in cash, that is a different mechanism, covered under cash and miles. [3]
How is the cash amount on a Reward Flight set?
The cash amount is fixed for a given redemption but not across the network. British Airways states that both the Avios and the cash price depend on the date, the destination and the class of travel, so two routes or two cabins can carry different cash amounts for the same Avios outlay. [3] British Airways' own examples, which it says were correct as of May 2026, run as follows. [3]
| Journey | Avios from | Cash from |
|---|---|---|
| Europe, the UK and Ireland, each way | 10,000 | £2.50 |
| Destinations further afield, return | 55,000 | £150 |
| Business (Club World), return | 154,000 | £350 |
Outside British Airways-operated flying the pattern changes. On Reward Flights flown with Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partners, British Airways says the cash amount required to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed, and that the number of Avios required for partner flights may differ from British Airways depending on route and distance travelled. [3] The club also guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on its own flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick, which is a statement about availability rather than about price. [3] How those seats are found and booked is covered in booking British Airways Club awards.
How do companion vouchers and upgrades work with a fixed cash amount?
Vouchers change how a booking is handled rather than how the price is built. British Airways says that if a Reward Flight booking was made using any type of voucher, such as a Companion Voucher or a Travel Together Ticket, changes must go through its contact centre instead of being made online. [3] On Avios-only flights, British Airways says a companion voucher works like this: a member travelling with a companion pays the Avios for one person and the taxes, fees and charges for both, while a member travelling solo pays half the Avios required for one person and the taxes, fees and charges for one person. [3]
Upgrades are priced from the same Reward Flight table. British Airways says the Avios required for an upgrade is based on the Avios costs for Reward Flights in the cabins being upgraded from and to, and depends on whether the flight is scheduled on a peak or an off-peak date; the one-way formula is the Avios for the cabin you wish to upgrade to minus the Avios for the cabin you booked in. [1] A Reward Flight that has been upgraded using Avios must also be changed through the contact centre. [3] On Avios-only flights, British Airways says a Barclays upgrade voucher or a Gold upgrade for one/two voucher can be used to move between cabins, subject to availability, at the same upgrade price as a standard Reward Flight. [3] The voucher mechanics are set out in using a British Airways companion voucher.
Do peak and off-peak dates change the price?
Yes, on the Avios side. British Airways says the chosen date of travel dictates whether a peak or an off-peak Avios amount is paid, and that a booking can be all peak dates, all off-peak dates, or a mixture of the two. [3] Changing from an off-peak to a peak date may require additional Avios, and a change from peak to off-peak produces a refund of the difference in Avios price; British Airways notes that for Avios part payment bookings the money portion of the difference is not refunded, and that such a booking can instead be cancelled for a full refund and rebooked. [3] Some of these changes cannot be completed online and require a call to the contact centre, including moving a British Airways Reward Flight from an off-peak date to a peak date. [3] See peak award and off-peak award, and the Avios entry for the currency itself.
Exceptions and limits
- Partner-operated Reward Flights. The fixed cash amount applies to British Airways-operated flying; with Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partners the cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed. [3]
- Guaranteed seats are limited and route-specific. On British Airways flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick the guarantee is at least eight reward seats in economy (Euro Traveller and World Traveller), two in premium economy (World Traveller Plus) and four in business (Club Europe and Club World); on flights to and from London City it is two in business (Club Europe) and two in economy (Euro Traveller). [3]
- Cancellations and changes. British Airways says Reward Flights can in most circumstances be cancelled or changed subject to availability for a small service fee, and that cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary to be eligible for a refund. [3] For Avios-only flights it says tickets can be cancelled up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund minus a £35 service fee. [3]
- Mixing with cash tickets. British Airways states that an Avios-only flight, like any other Reward Flight, cannot be combined with a commercial flight on the same booking. [3]
- Partner mileage prices. The Avios required for partner flights may vary from British Airways depending on route and distance travelled, so the Avios half of the price is not uniform across the network either. [3]
Frequently asked questions
Is a Reward Flight Saver the same thing as cash plus miles?
No. On a Reward Flight the Avios amount and the cash amount are both fixed. [1] Avios part payment is a separate option in which a member reduces the Avios cost by paying an additional cash amount, with a range of Avios & Money combinations offered at checkout where available. [3]
Does the cash amount change depending on where I fly and which cabin I book?
Yes. British Airways says both the Avios and the cash price of a Reward Flight depend on the date, destination and class of travel. [3]
Can I use a companion voucher on a Reward Flight?
Yes, and British Airways lists Reward Flight bookings made with any type of voucher, including a Companion Voucher or Travel Together Ticket, among the cases that must be changed by calling its contact centre. [3] On Avios-only flights, the companion voucher means paying the Avios for one person and the taxes, fees and charges for both. [3]
Are Reward Flight seats guaranteed on British Airways flights?
British Airways guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on its flights to and from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London City, with the cabin counts set out above. [3]
Do off-peak dates make a Reward Flight cheaper?
The date of travel determines whether a peak or off-peak Avios amount applies, so the Avios half of the price can differ between dates. [3]
