FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a travel credit card?
A travel credit card is a credit card built around travel spending: it earns a rewards currency, generally issued by the card company rather than by an airline or hotel group, that can be put toward travel purchases or moved into outside loyalty programmes. Its character comes as much from the terms wrapped around those rewards — how the currency is redeemed, what travel protection it carries and whether purchases abroad attract a fee — as from the earn rate itself. One example is the Capital One Venture X Rewards card, which carries a $395 annual fee and lets cardholders transfer miles to 15+ travel loyalty programmes. [6]

Key takeaways
- Issuers treat travel rewards cards as a shelf of their own, listed separately from airline rewards cards, and they also sort cards by features such as having no foreign transaction fee. [8]
- The Capital One Venture X Rewards card earns 2X miles on all other purchases, 5X on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel, and 10X on hotels and rental cars booked there, for a $395 annual fee. [6]
- Miles earned on that card can be used against travel expenses or transferred to 15+ travel loyalty programmes, and Capital One says they do not expire for the life of the account. [6]
- Most extras come with conditions: Priority Pass access requires enrolment, lounge entry depends on space, and hotel credits apply only to bookings made through Capital One Travel in the cardholder's name. [6]
How does a travel credit card work?
A travel credit card earns a rewards currency that is intended to be spent on travel rather than simply credited back as cash. Two things distinguish it. First, the rewards can normally be applied to travel purchases, or converted into an airline or hotel programme's currency. Second, the card's rulebook is written with trips in mind: what happens when a purchase is processed outside the home country, what protection the card provides, and whether it opens access to airport lounges. Issuers themselves market these as a distinct category — Bank of America's card directory separates "Travel Rewards Credit Cards" from "Airline Rewards Credit Cards" and also groups cards by features such as "No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Cards". [8]
The rewards usually live in the issuer's own currency rather than in an airline account. Capital One, for example, issues miles on the Venture X Rewards card and says cardholders can use them to cover travel expenses including flights, hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars, or transfer them to a choice of 15+ travel loyalty programmes. [6] Once a transfer is final, the receiving loyalty programme's terms apply. [6] For the 5X miles offered on Capital One Entertainment purchases, only tickets bought on the Capital One Entertainment ticketing platform with an eligible card qualify; tickets bought through Capital One cardholder-exclusive pre-sales or directly through Capital One Hall or Capital One Arena ticketing are excluded. Capital One says those rewards post within one to two billing cycles, are reclaimed if an eligible purchase is cancelled or returned, and require the account to be open and in good standing. [6]
Because the currency is flexible, earning rates are usually tiered by where the spending happens rather than being flat. The tiering, the annual fee and the redemption options are the parts that differ most between products.

On expiry, Capital One says Venture X miles will not expire for the life of the account and that the card has no blackout dates. [6] Additional cardholders can be added, and the primary account holder earns rewards on what they spend, while remaining responsible for all charges they make. What limits and exceptions apply?
- Lounge access is conditional. Primary cardholders can use Capital One Lounges and Landing locations, presenting a physical card or the digital lounge pass in the mobile app, and can use 1,300+ participating Priority Pass lounges worldwide, but Priority Pass entry requires enrolment first. Capital One states that access is not guaranteed and depends on space being available. [6]
- Hotel and vacation rental credits depend on the booking channel. A Premier Collection hotel stay carries an experience credit of up to $100, and a Lifestyle Collection stay up to $50, applied at checkout by the hotel to qualifying charges; the equivalent vacation rental credits are applied at the time of booking by the host provider. The booking must be made through Capital One Travel in the eligible cardholder's name with the cardholder travelling, benefits apply per room or per stay, and back-to-back bookings of the same property within 24 hours count as one reservation. [6]
- Credits have use restrictions. They cannot be redeemed for cash or combined with other offers unless specified, participating properties and benefits can change, and Capital One says it may disqualify a cardholder from participation and benefits at its discretion. [6]
- Protection benefits need a qualifying payment. Cell phone protection applies when the mobile bill is paid with the card, reimbursing up to $800 if the phone is stolen or damaged, subject to terms, conditions and exclusions. [6]
- Partner status upgrades must be claimed. The Hertz Gold+ Rewards status upgrade requires enrolment through the unique link in the Benefits tab after signing in, and the offer is subject to change. [6]
