Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • American Express states that Membership Rewards points do not expire provided the cardmember stays enrolled and compliant with the programme terms, but the same page lists several situations in which points are lost. [4]
  • Points can be moved to airline and hotel loyalty programmes, only into an account in the cardmember's own name, and the transfer cannot be reversed. [4]

Earning Membership Rewards points

Membership Rewards is described by American Express as a loyalty programme in which cardmembers are rewarded for eligible spending on their card. [4] On the UK programme page the stated rate is one Membership Rewards point for every full pound of eligible spend, and the same page repeats that rate as the way points accumulate on everyday purchases. [4]

Eligible spend excludes a defined list of transactions: interest, all fees including annual membership fees and default fees, balance transfers, cash advances including transactions treated as cash, loading of pre-paid cards, American Express Travellers Cheque purchases, foreign exchange transactions, and any amounts later credited to the card account as refunds or other credits. [4] Points appear in the Membership Rewards balance 24 to 48 hours after the charge has appeared on the card account, and the Membership Rewards statement normally closes 4 to 6 days earlier than the card statement, so points earned in that gap show up in the following points statement. [4]

Separately from ordinary spending, American Express Travel Online is described as offering one additional Membership Rewards point for every £1 spent on flights, pre-paid hotels, car hire and experiences booked through that service. [4]

What the points are worth at redemption

The UK programme page lists fixed redemption rates against several rewards: 1,000 points equals £4.50 when points are used to reduce the monthly card balance, to cover the cost of a purchase, at Amazon.co.uk, at PayPal checkout, through SafeKey pay with points, as a donation to UK charities via JustGiving, and towards travel booked with American Express Travel. [4] Gift cards are listed at a different rate, 1,000 points for £5. [4] These are the rates stated on the programme page and apply to the redemption options listed there, not to transfers to airline and hotel programmes. [4]

Under the SafeKey Pay with Points terms published on the same page, redemption is blocked in some circumstances: points cannot be used if the card account has a credit balance, if a redemption credit would create a credit balance, or if a payment has been missed. [4] Under the same terms, where goods are returned or a service is cancelled, the refund is credited to the card account and the points account is not reimbursed, although American Express says a cardmember can contact it to ask for the points account to be reimbursed instead. [4]

Transfers to airline and hotel programmes

Membership Rewards points can be transferred to American Express travel loyalty partners, including airline and hotel programmes, after the partner account details are linked to the Membership Rewards account. [4] American Express says there is no limit to the number of partner programmes that can be linked, and that verification of a linked account can take up to 14 days. [4] Transfers must go into an account in the cardmember's own name and cannot be made into someone else's airline or hotel account. [4] Once points have been transferred they cannot be transferred back, because transfers to partner programmes are irreversible. [4] The full list of partners is set out separately: Amex Membership Rewards transfer partners.

Exceptions and limits

  • No expiry, with conditions. American Express says points have no expiration date provided the cardmember remains in compliance with the terms and enrolled in the programme. [4]
  • Closing the account. If the card account agreement is ended and there are no other linked cards on the points account, the cardmember has 30 days from the date of the request to redeem the points, after which they are forfeited. [4] If American Express itself cancels or ends the card account under the agreement, points earned but not yet redeemed are lost. [4]
  • Missed payments. If a monthly payment is missed, the points earned in the previous month are forfeited and deducted from the points account, which can leave a negative balance. [4]
  • Enrolment. Enrolment in Membership Rewards is handled by telephone through the Membership Rewards team on the number published on the programme page, and programme availability depends on which card the customer holds; the page does not say which cards qualify. [4]
  • Product naming. The UK programme page carries a representative APR footnote for a product labelled "American Express® Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card", at 85.8% APR variable. [4] That entry is a credit card. For the general distinction between the two card types, see charge card.
