Discover Cash Back: rotating categories and Cashback Match
Discover Cash Back is the cash-back rewards programme on the Discover it Cash Back credit card, which pays 5% cash back at different places you shop each quarter when you activate the bonus, 1% cash back on all other purchases, and an unlimited dollar-for-dollar Cashback Match on the cash back earned in the first year. [1]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Discover it Cash Back pays 5% cash back at different places you shop each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum, but only when the bonus has been activated; all other purchases earn 1%. [1]
- Cashback Match adds a dollar for every dollar of cash back earned during the first 365 days, automatically, with no cap on the amount matched. [1]
- Redeeming cash back during the first year does not reduce the match. [1]
- The card has no annual fee and offers a 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, then a 17.74% to 26.74% variable APR. [1] [2]
How does the Discover it Cash Back card earn cash back?
The card earns on two tiers. The first is 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum, and it applies when you activate the bonus. [1] The second is 1% cash back on all other purchases. [1] Because the 5% is tied to different places each quarter rather than to one permanent set of merchants, the businesses covered by the bonus are not the same all year. [1]
Activation is a separate step from applying for the card: the 5% rate applies when the bonus is activated, so a quarter in which no activation is made runs at the base rate. [1] Discover's rewards terms define calendar quarters as beginning on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. [2]
Earnings apply to net purchases, meaning purchases minus any credits or returns. [2] Cash advances, balance transfers, transfers from Discover or Capital One checking or other deposit accounts, and checks used to access the account are not treated as purchases and do not earn rewards. [2] Cash back is credited when a transaction is processed, which may be later than the transaction date. [1]
| Item | Terms |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 [2] |
| Purchase APR | 0% intro APR for 15 months; 17.74% to 26.74% variable APR after that [1] [2] |
| Transfer APR | 17.74% to 26.74% variable [2] |
| Cash advance APR | 28.74% variable [2] |
| Cash advance fee | Either $10 or 5% of each cash advance, whichever is greater [2] |
| Balance transfer fee | 3% of amounts transferred within the first 15 months; 5% of each balance that posts at a promotional APR [2] |
How does the first-year Cashback Match work?
Cashback Match is automatic. Discover matches all the cash back earned on the card from the day the new account is approved through the first 365 days, then adds the match to the rewards account within two billing periods. [1] The match is dollar for dollar — earn $50 in cash back and Discover adds another $50 — and there is no limit to the amount matched. [1]
Redeeming cash back during the year does not shrink the match: the full matched amount still arrives at the end of the first year. [1] The offer is exclusively for new cardholders, carries no purchase minimums, and Discover states that the promotional offer may not be available in the future. [1]
Because cash back is earned only when transactions are processed, a purchase made close to the end of the 365-day window can fall outside the matched period. [1] Four categories are not matched: rewards processed after the match period ends, statement credits, rewards transfers from Discover or Capital One checking or other deposit accounts, and rewards on accounts that are closed. [1]
How is Discover cash back redeemed?
Cash back can be redeemed any time after it is earned, and redeeming along the way still leaves the full first-year match intact. [1] The rewards programme terms and the online account set out the redemption options available and the rules attached to them. [2]
Discover is now part of Capital One, and Discover card accounts are moving to Capital One throughout 2026 and early 2027, with all accounts moved by early 2027. [3] Cardholders keep their Discover card and rewards, the card keeps its $0 annual fee, and the rewards earn rate stays the same. [3] In the period before an account is ready at Capital One, some features — including redeeming rewards and changing account details — are unavailable on the Discover website and app for a time, then become available on the Capital One website and app after the move. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Only purchases earn. Net purchases earn rewards; cash advances, balance transfers, transfers from deposit accounts and checks used to access the account do not. [2]
- Some amounts are carved out. Portions of purchases paid with rewards, transactions that do not comply with Discover's policies or applicable law, and cash received at the point of sale through Cash at Checkout do not earn rewards. [2]
- The bonus rate is capped. The 5% rate applies only up to the quarterly maximum; other purchases, including purchases above that level, earn 1%. [1]
- No annual fee is not the same as no cost. The card charges interest and may carry other fees; paying the balance in full at each statement period may avoid interest on purchases and reduce the cost of using credit. [1]
- Offer terms vary. Terms shown on a product page may differ from the terms of an individual offer, so the terms of the specific offer govern. [1]
Frequently asked questions
Do you have to activate the 5% categories every quarter?
Yes. The 5% rate applies when the quarterly bonus is activated, and all other purchases earn 1% instead. [1]
Is there a limit to the Cashback Match?
No. Discover matches the cash back dollar for dollar and states there is no limit to how much will be matched. [1]
Does redeeming cash back during the year reduce the match?
No. Cash back can be redeemed any time after it is earned, and the full match is still paid at the end of the first year. [1]
Do cash advances and balance transfers earn cash back?
No. They are not treated as purchases and do not earn rewards. [2]
What happens to the card when the account moves to Capital One?
The card stays a Discover card, the rewards stay in place, the $0 annual fee continues and the rewards earn rate stays the same. [3]
