Etihad Airways lounges: access and Etihad Guest tiers

Etihad Airways lounges are the airport lounges Etihad presents as part of its Etihad Guest programme: lounge access in Abu Dhabi is the airline's own example of the extra benefit a member gains on moving up a tier. [7] The programme terms add one stated condition, availability, where lounge entitlement arises from an upgrade bought with miles at the airport. [3]

Key takeaways

  • Etihad treats lounge access in Abu Dhabi as one of the benefits of a higher Etihad Guest Tier, using it as the example of what a member gets on reaching Silver. [7]
  • Where lounge entitlement comes from an upgrade bought with miles at the airport, Etihad's terms say entitlement follows the upgraded cabin and that access is subject to availability. [3]

Lounge access as a tier benefit

Etihad Guest has five Tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald — and a member moves up by earning the required number of Tier Miles within 12 months. [7] Etihad's explanation of how Tiers work uses lounge access as its illustration: a member who earns 25,000 Tier Miles in a year moves from Bronze to Silver and, in Etihad's words, enjoys "even more benefits, like lounge access in Abu Dhabi." [7] A second answer on the same page repeats the example with a condition attached, putting the figure at 25,000 Tier Miles "with 10,000 Tier Miles from flying." [7] The tiers page also describes rising through the programme as unlocking benefits that include "access to our luxury lounges." [7]

Tier Status is not permanent. Etihad's terms say Tier Miles are valid for 12 months with no extension, and that upgrade, retention and downgrade of Tier Status are calculated every year from the Tier Miles earned in the preceding 12 months. [3] The tier that Etihad illustrates with lounge access is therefore reviewed on that annual cycle. [3] [7]

Upgrades bought with miles

Etihad Guest Miles can be spent on a one-class cabin upgrade on certain Etihad revenue tickets, or on a Promo seat with a Deluxe Fare Brand, provided the ticket is already issued, space exists in booking classes I or O, the member holds enough miles and the upgrade is booked at least three hours before departure. [3] Miles can also be used to upgrade to Business, First or The Residence. [7]

The terms deal with lounge entitlement explicitly only for upgrades claimed at the airport. In that situation, Etihad states that "entitlement to lounge accesses will be as per the upgraded class" and that lounge access is subject to availability. [3] Airport upgrades are a discretionary facility: they depend on operational resources and on seat and meal availability, must be handled within the stated window before flight closure, and may be withdrawn where operations do not permit the transaction. [3]

On the day, guests and outstations

Etihad and its Etihad Guest Partners may require a member to produce a physical or digital Etihad Guest Card, or quote the Etihad Guest Number, at any time while booking, earning, ticketing, travelling, using a benefit or claiming a reward. [3] The card may only be used by the person named on it and is an identification card rather than a payment card. [3] A practical reading is that a member using a lounge as a benefit should expect to show the card or number, but the sources do not describe a separate lounge check-in process. [3]

Two limits matter for planning.

Exceptions and limits

  • Availability is a stated condition, not a footnote. Etihad attaches it to the lounge entitlement that follows an airport upgrade, so meeting the cabin test does not by itself guarantee entry. [3]
  • Upgrades booked in advance through the service centre or website have their own conditions. [3]
  • Benefits are personal. The Etihad Guest Card may only be used by the named member, and members must not disclose their credentials or let others use their account. [3]
  • Family membership does not merge tier status.
  • Partner airlines are described as Etihad Guest Partners, not as an alliance.
  • No paid-access or cardholder route is described.
