JAL Card: a credit card with JAL Mileage Bank built in

JAL Card is the credit card JAL presents alongside JAL Mileage Bank: JAL calls it "the all-in-one card", JAL Mileage Bank membership with integrated credit features, so everyday payments can add miles to the same balance that pays for award tickets. [1] The Japanese membership page describes it as a credit card formed by adding credit functions to JAL Mileage Bank. [5] Mileage Bank membership itself is free to join, with no registration or annual fee, and JAL gives the card its own separate Join Now entry. [1]

Key takeaways

  • A JAL Card is a credit card with JAL Mileage Bank membership built in, so card spending and flights feed a single mileage balance. [1]
  • Mileage Bank membership has no registration or annual fee and can be set up online, while the card has its own separate Join Now entry. [1]
  • Flight miles follow Mileage Bank rules that are set per airline and per fare; on SriLankan Airlines flights, for example, the member's nine-digit JMB number must be in the booking and the ticket must be issued in the member's name. [6]
  • Card types, card features, insurance, discounts and the card membership terms are published as JAL Card material in Japanese, separately from the Mileage Bank pages. [1] [5]

What is the JAL Card and what does it earn?

JAL's English membership page presents the JAL Card as "the all-in-one card: JAL Mileage Bank membership with integrated credit features", aimed at members who want to earn miles from everyday payments as well as from flights and shopping. [1] The Japanese membership page describes the same product as a credit card formed by adding credit functions to JAL Mileage Bank. [5] JAL's footer names JALCARD, INC alongside Japan Airlines and JALPAK, and links JAL Card corporate information and JAL Card membership terms as documents of their own. [5]

Miles collected on the card land in the member's Mileage Bank account, where JAL lists the ways to spend them: award tickets on JAL domestic and international flights, partner airline award tickets, conversion to e JAL Points, hotel stays, car rentals and travel experiences. [1] The JAL Mileage Bank profile covers the earning and spending side of that account.

The line-up is not one product. JAL's card menu lists a card-type list, card features, insurance, services and discounts, a usage guide, lost-or-stolen reporting, a JAL Card app, a family membership card and a member referral programme, all on Japanese-language pages. [1] Within the line-up, the JAL Luxury Card is presented as a premium card whose holders can obtain "JMB Crystal" status, a status JAL says is normally provided to members holding 30,000 FLY ON points. [5] This page covers the JAL Card line-up that JAL describes on its own membership pages. [1] [5]

How do you earn JAL miles with a JAL Card?

JAL splits mileage earning into flights and travel, and daily purchases: JAL Mall, JAL Mileage Park (a finder for shops where miles accrue), the JAL Card itself, and JAL Card contract stores where miles are earned at a double rate. [1] JAL's card menu also lists two premium services — Shopping Miles Premium for shopping and Tour Premium for flights — presented as ways to earn more miles. [1] The Japanese page lists the same pair. [5]

JAL's membership page also presents JAL Pay, the company's smartphone payment service, as a product of its own, and says miles accrue further when it is used at airports and on board. [5]

Shopping miles are not automatic on every transaction. JAL's card notices record additions to the list of transactions excluded from shopping-mile accrual, including charges to some e-money and prepaid cards and certain services, alongside a revision to the shopping-mile accumulation rate for one business card. [5] What a particular card earns on a particular purchase is therefore a card-level question rather than a Mileage Bank one. [5]

Which rules come from JAL Mileage Bank and which come from the card?

Two rulebooks meet in the JAL Card: Mileage Bank governs how miles are earned and spent and how status is measured, while the card governs which product the member holds and which card features, insurance and discounts come with it. [1] [5]

What it coversWhere the rule sits
Miles on flightsMileage Bank rules, applied per airline and fare. On SriLankan Airlines flights the nine-digit JMB number must be given in the booking or at check-in, the ticket must be in the member's name, and mileage uses the sector mileage plus the fare's accumulation rate. [6]

Flight mileage carries dated, airline-specific fare tables. Malaysia Airlines flights departing from 1 April 2025 use one table: First Class and Business Suite booking classes F and A at 150%, Business Class J, C and D at 125%, Z at 70%, Economy Y and B at 100%, H, K and M at 70%, L, V and S at 50%, and N, Q and O at 30%. [7] Flights departing up to 31 March 2025 use a different table: F and A at 150%, J, C and D at 125%, Z at 100%, Economy Y, B and H at 100%, K and M at 50%, and L, V and S at 25%. [7] FLY ON members also receive extra bonus miles on each flight according to their FLY ON level under the Mile-Up Bonus described on that partner's mileage page. [7]

What are the exceptions and limits?

  • Benefits are set per card type. JAL's card notices address named cards: a revision to overseas travel insurance for damage to carried belongings aimed at JAL Card navi, CLUB-A Card and JAL Card Suica CLUB-A Gold Card members, a change to how JAL Card navi members apply for certification bonus miles, a revision of the language-certification bonus-mile scheme, and a revised overseas transaction handling fee for the JAL American Express Card. [5]
  • Card terms are a separate document. JAL publishes JAL Card membership terms with their own revision notice, listed with JAL Card corporate and privacy information rather than within the Mileage Bank pages. [5]
  • Flight miles have limits. Mileage does not accrue when a flight is not boarded for any reason, on award tickets, non-revenue tickets or some discounted fares, when travelling under a different name, or when the flight has been credited to another frequent flyer programme; post-flight credit must be requested within six months of the flight date. [6] The same ineligibility list appears on the Malaysia Airlines page. [7]
  • Not every card benefit is a mile. Insurance, services and discounts are listed as card features in their own right, alongside the mileage earning routes. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Does a JAL Card include JAL Mileage Bank membership?

JAL describes the JAL Card as an all-in-one card combining Mileage Bank membership with credit features [1], and the Japanese page describes it as a credit card formed by adding credit functions to JAL Mileage Bank [5]. Mileage Bank can also be joined free online on its own. [1]

Do all JAL cards earn miles at the same rate?

JAL keeps a card-type list and publishes notices aimed at particular cards, including a revised shopping-mile accumulation rate for one business card and changes to certification bonus miles for JAL Card navi members, so the earning detail belongs to the individual card. [5]

How long do I have to claim missing flight miles?

Post-flight credit requests must be made within six months of the flight date if the JMB number was not given before the flight. [6] [7]

Where are the card's own terms published?

As JAL Card membership terms, a document JAL lists separately from its Mileage Bank pages and alongside JAL Card corporate information. [5]
