PROGRAMME PROFILE

Virgin Atlantic credit cards: Reward and Reward+

Virgin Atlantic credit cards are UK-issued credit cards that earn Virgin Points in the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club programme: the Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card and the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card, both issued by Nationwide Building Society trading as Virgin Money. [1] Card spending feeds a Flying Club balance, and a high annual spend earns a Flying Club reward voucher that can be used for a companion seat or a cabin upgrade on Virgin Atlantic operated flights. [1]

Key takeaways

  • Virgin Atlantic publishes two UK consumer cards, and both pay Virgin Points into Flying Club, so a cardholder must be a Flying Club member with a membership number linked to the card. [1]
  • The Reward+ card carries a £160 annual fee, pays 1.5 Virgin Points per £1 of card purchases (3 per £1 with Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Holidays) and reaches its reward voucher at £10,000 of annual spend. [1]
  • The Reward card has no annual fee, pays 0.75 Virgin Points per £1 (1.5 per £1 with Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Holidays) and reaches its reward voucher at £20,000 of annual spend. [1]
  • Monthly earning on both cards is capped by the cardholder's credit limit, and the cap does not apply to bonus points. [1]

The two UK cards

Both cards are issued by Nationwide Building Society, trading as Virgin Money, with Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd acting as an appointed representative of Nationwide Building Society. [1] Credit is available subject to status and only to UK residents aged 18 or over. [1]

Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card. This card has no annual fee. It pays 3,000 bonus Virgin Points for a purchase made within the first 90 days from account opening, with no minimum spend, then 0.75 Virgin Points per £1 of card purchases and 1.5 Virgin Points per £1 spent directly with Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Holidays. [1]

Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card. This card has a £160 annual fee. It pays 18,000 bonus Virgin Points for a purchase within the first 90 days from account opening, again with no minimum spend, then 1.5 Virgin Points per £1 of card purchases and 3 Virgin Points per £1 spent directly with Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Holidays. [1]

Earning on card spend

Points are credited to a Flying Club account: cardholders need Flying Club membership and must link their membership number to the card. [1] Points are added every month within five days of the credit card statement date, and bonus points arrive in the month after they are earned. [1]

Points are not earned on cash advances, balance transfers, money transfers, interest or fees, and purchases of Virgin Points do not qualify for the higher Virgin Atlantic rate. [1] There is also a monthly cap set by the credit limit: Virgin Atlantic's example is a £5,000 limit, where points are earned on the first £5,000 of card purchases in a month, with the counter resetting on each statement date, and the cap does not apply to bonus points. [1]

The balance is spent at Flying Club's variable reward prices, which are displayed at the time of booking, with the lowest available prices flagged as Saver reward seats. [3] The card page cites Saver reward seats from 6,000 Virgin Points as an example of what a balance can buy. [1]

Card spend is only one input into a Flying Club account. Points earned by flying with Virgin Atlantic depend on distance, booking class and tier status, and Silver and Gold members receive a 30% and 60% bonus respectively on that flight earning, which is separate from the card earn rates above. [5]

Reward vouchers and companion rewards

Both cards carry an annual spend threshold that produces a Flying Club reward voucher, and only one voucher can be earned every 12 months, with the period resetting on each anniversary of the card account opening. [1] The threshold is £10,000 of card purchases over 12 months on the Reward+ card and £20,000 on the Reward card. [1]

Voucher value depends on Flying Club tier at the moment of redemption rather than at the moment it was earned: a Red tier member's voucher can be redeemed for an upgrade or companion seat up to the value of 75,000 Virgin Points, and a Silver or Gold member's up to 150,000 Virgin Points. [1] A member who earned the voucher at Red tier and later moved to Silver would therefore hold a voucher worth up to 150,000 Virgin Points when redeeming. [1]

Vouchers can only be redeemed on bookings for Virgin Atlantic operated flights, for either a round trip Companion Reward Seat or a round trip cabin upgrade; taxes, fees and carrier-imposed surcharges remain payable, and upgrades cannot be applied to Economy Light bookings. [1] Where the reward costs less than the voucher value, the voucher is redeemed in full, and where it costs more, the difference can be funded with additional Virgin Points. [1]

The voucher is added to the Flying Club account within 30 days of being earned, and bookings using it are made by calling the Flying Club contact centre. [1] It must be spent within 24 months of issue, meaning the flights must be booked and the outbound flight taken inside those 24 months, although the return journey can follow later. [1] Further conditions apply to voucher redemptions under the Flying Club terms. [1] [3]

Members are not permitted to sell or auction rewards, vouchers or Virgin Points in any circumstances. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Representative examples published for the cards: the Reward+ card shows a purchase rate of 26.9% p.a. variable, equivalent to 69.7% APR representative variable, based on a £1,200 credit limit and the £160 annual fee; the Reward card shows 26.9% p.a. variable and 26.9% APR representative variable on the same £1,200 limit with no annual fee. [1]
  • Bonus points require a purchase inside the first 90 days from initial account opening and have no minimum spend requirement. [1]
  • The monthly cap follows the individual credit limit, so the amount of spend that earns points differs by account; the £5,000 figure in the card terms is an illustration. [1]
  • Card upgrades cannot be applied to Economy Light bookings, and a card voucher can only be used on Virgin Atlantic operated flights. [1]
  • Flying Club states there is no prescribed time frame to redeem Virgin Points while a member remains in the programme and complies with the terms, but unredeemed points are forfeited if the account is cancelled or terminated. [3]
  • Reward vouchers earned by linked members of a Flying Club Household Account are not transferred to the household leader's account. [3]
  • Each card is governed by its own Flying Club terms, which sit between the cardholder and Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited, and the Flying Club terms also apply. [1]
  • The cards are only for UK residents aged 18 or over; the card page directs readers outside the UK to a separate Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard, whose terms are outside this page. [1]
