PROGRAMME PROFILE

Wells Fargo Rewards

Wells Fargo Rewards is the rewards programme that sits behind Wells Fargo credit cards, including the points-earning Autograph and Autograph Journey cards and the cash-rewards Active Cash card. [1] [3] The issuer publishes earning rates card by card and merchant category by merchant category, quoted as points or cash rewards per dollar spent. [3] Redemption is described on those pages only in passing, as a cash redemption value attached to an introductory bonus. [3]

Key takeaways

  • Wells Fargo Rewards is named on wellsfargo.com as a credit card service, and the card pages point to the Wells Fargo Rewards programme terms for both points cards and cash-rewards cards. [1] [3]
  • The Autograph card pays 3 points per $1 in selected categories and 1 point per $1 elsewhere, while the Autograph Journey card pays 5 points per $1 at hotels, 4 at airlines, 3 on other travel and at restaurants, and 1 point per $1 on other purchases. [3]
  • The 20,000-point Autograph introductory bonus equals a $200 cash redemption value. [3]

What the programme covers

Wells Fargo lists Wells Fargo Rewards as one of its credit card services, alongside card confirmation, balance transfers and cardholder support. [1] The card pages organise the portfolio into cash back, rewards, travel, no annual fee, balance transfer, 0% intro APR and business categories. [3]

The rewards cards fall into two groups. The Autograph and Autograph Journey cards earn rewards points, and their pages direct readers to the Summary of the Wells Fargo Rewards Program Terms and Conditions plus a card addendum. [3] The Active Cash card earns cash rewards and earns 2% cash rewards per $1 spent on purchases with a $0 annual fee, and its small print also points to the Wells Fargo Rewards programme terms. [3] The Choice Privileges and One Key cards listed on the same page earn hotel points or OneKeyCash rather than Wells Fargo points, and OneKeyCash is not redeemable for cash and can only be used on Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. [3]

How points are earned

Autograph. Three rewards points are earned per $1 on net purchases at retailers whose Visa merchant code is classified as travel, transit, gas, dining, phone plans or popular streaming services, and one point per $1 on other net purchases. [3] The travel group covers airlines, hotels and motels, timeshares, vehicle rental, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites and campgrounds; transit covers passenger rail, taxis, limousines, ferries, tolls, parking; gas covers fuel dispensers and electric vehicle charging. [3]

Autograph Journey. Five points are earned per $1 at hotels and motels, four per $1 with airlines, three per $1 at restaurants and on other travel, and one point per $1 on other purchases. [3] On both cards the rate is built from one base point plus bonus points. [3]

Cash advances and cash equivalents of any kind do not earn points on either card. [3] Purchases that are not billed under the listed merchant codes may not qualify, and the detailed exclusion lists sit in the programme terms and card addenda rather than on the card page. [3]

Card-level terms and bonuses

The Autograph card has a $0 annual fee and offers 20,000 bonus points when at least $1,000 in net purchases posts within the first three months of account opening. [3] The Autograph Journey card carries a $95 annual fee and offers 60,000 bonus points on $4,000 of net purchases in the same window. [3] On both cards the bonus points show as redeemable within 60 days after they are earned. [3]

Autograph Journey also includes a $50 annual statement credit applied when the card is used for a first airline purchase of at least $50. [3] Charter and private jet flights are not treated as airline purchases. [3] In the first year the credit is available at account opening; afterwards the 12-month credit period starts on the first day of the month after the annual fee is assessed and renews every 12 months, and the credit shows within 60 days after it is earned. [3]

Redemption and what is not published

The 20,000-point Autograph introductory bonus is described as a $200 cash redemption value. [3] That indicates points can be taken as cash. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Offers change over time and by marketing channel, and a customer has to select "Apply now" to take advantage of a listed offer. [3]
  • A listed offer is not a guarantee of credit, and each card is subject to credit qualification and its own eligibility requirements. [3]
  • Excluded purchases on the points cards include cash advances and cash equivalents such as ATM transactions, traveller's cheques, money orders, prepaid gift cards, person-to-person transfers, digital currencies and wire transfers; balance transfers, disputed or illegal purchases, fees and interest, and gambling transactions are also listed in the introductory offer terms. [3]
  • Bonus category qualification depends on how a retailer is coded, so a purchase that looks like travel or dining may earn the base rate instead of a bonus rate. [3]
  • Cards on the same page are not interchangeable: Active Cash pays cash rewards, the Choice Privileges cards pay Choice points, and the One Key cards pay OneKeyCash with its own rules. [3]
