How to use the Amtrak USA Rail Pass

Amtrak USA Rail Pass is a fixed-price Amtrak product that gives one traveller 10 rides (segments) over 30 days across more than 500 destinations, sold at $499 as of 18 October 2026. [2] The pass itself stays valid for 120 days from purchase, and each ride is booked as a separate segment in Coach class. [2]

Key takeaways

  • The pass covers 10 segments over 30 days across more than 500 destinations, priced at $499 as of 18 October 2026, which Amtrak describes as less than $50 per segment. [2]
  • Pass validity is 120 days from the purchase date, and the 30-day travel window starts once the first segment is used. [2]
  • Travel is in Coach class only; private room accommodation cannot be booked on the pass at this time. [2]
  • There are no blackout dates or time-of-day restrictions, but route, fare-type and city-pair limits apply. [2]

What the pass includes

Amtrak sells the USA Rail Pass as a multi-segment journey on a single fixed price rather than a set of individual tickets. [2] Once the pass is bought, each segment is booked from the purchase confirmation, from “My Trip” on Amtrak.com, or by looking up the reservation in the Amtrak mobile app. [2]

A segment is counted every time a traveller boards and gets off one train or other scheduled service, so a journey with one connection uses two of the ten segments. [2] Ten segments is therefore a cap on rides taken, not on the number of stops visited, and long itineraries with several changes eat into the allowance quickly. [2]

Travel is in Coach class, described by Amtrak as wide reclining seats, a large picture window, extra legroom and no middle seat; upgrades to private room accommodation are not available at this time. [2] A traveller who wants a bed on an overnight leg needs a separate booking, explained in Amtrak sleeper accommodation.

Amtrak Guest Rewards members earn 2 points per dollar spent on each USA Rail Pass purchase, credited after travel on the first segment, and points cannot currently be redeemed for a pass. [2] The earning side of the programme is covered in the Amtrak Guest Rewards guide.

How long the pass lasts and how to book segments

The validity period is 120 days following the purchase date, and once travel begins on the first segment the traveller has 30 days to complete all remaining segments. [2] Any segment not taken by the end of the validity period is lost, because the pass carries no remaining value after that date even if nothing was booked or used. [2]

Before boarding, each segment must be confirmed with Amtrak RideReserve, which applies to USA Rail Pass travel on both reserved and unreserved services. [1] The pass holder retrieves the pass, chooses the trip, confirms the train and is then ready to board. [1] RideReserve confirmations can only be made within 14 days of the trip. [1]

Each traveller must buy their own pass and travel is booked on separate reservations. [2] For children, a pass is bought for each child and the tickets are then booked by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. [2] The number of seats available on each train to USA Rail Pass holders is limited. [2]

Where the pass cannot be used

Amtrak applies three restrictions to the pass: route restrictions, fare-type restrictions and city-pair restrictions. [2] On routes, the pass is accepted on all Amtrak services except the following. [2]

Services excluded from Amtrak USA Rail Pass travel
ServiceUSA Rail Pass accepted?
AcelaNo [2]
Auto TrainNo [2]
Maple Leaf (Canadian stations only)No [2]
Thruway Bus Series 7000–7999No [2]
Other Amtrak servicesYes [2]

On fares, the pass is sold for Sale and Value Fares only, so departures offered solely as Flex Fares cannot be booked with a pass; Amtrak.com and the app show which departures accept the pass. [2] On city pairs, travel is limited to two round trips (four one-way trips) between the same two stations, and that cap also covers all intermediate destinations on the route. [2] A traveller who needs more trips between the same pair of stations is pointed to a multi-ride pass instead. [2]

Exceptions, changes and refunds

  • No blackout dates. Amtrak lists no blackout dates and no time-of-day restrictions on the pass, so the limits that matter are the route, fare-type and city-pair rules. [2]
  • Changing a booked segment. Trip changes are permitted before the scheduled departure time of a booked segment, and the rebooked segment must fall within the 120-day validity period or within 30 days of starting the first segment. [2] A segment can also be cancelled and returned to the pass if this is done before its scheduled departure. [2]
  • Nothing after departure. No changes or cancellations are permitted once a booked segment's scheduled departure time has passed. [2]
  • Missed trains. A segment that is booked and not used expires after its scheduled departure and consumes one segment. [2] Where a missed connection or service disruption is involved, an Amtrak agent at the station or on 1-800-872-7245 can rebook the travel without losing the segment. [2]
  • Refunds. Amtrak's refund rules allow changes and cancellations only before travel begins. [2] Cancelling from the time of purchase to two or more days before departure carries no fee and a full refund to the original form of payment, while cancelling within two days of departure forfeits 25% of the total fare and refunds 75%. [2] The segment-change rules separately allow a booked segment to be changed before its departure, so the two sets of rules should be read together. [2]
  • Accessibility. The pass is available to travellers with disabilities, who can book trips and request assistance on Amtrak.com or the app, with agents answering questions about specific service requests on 1-800-USA-RAIL. [2]

No. The pass is a Coach-class product and upgrades to private room accommodation are not available at this time. [2]
