Amtrak Guest Rewards: points, status and Points & Cash

Amtrak Guest Rewards separates spendable points from Tier Qualifying Points. Check award availability and the selected ticket's rules before booking; Points & Cash has specific online-only and change restrictions.

Separate points from tier progress

Amtrak Guest Rewards has points that can be redeemed for eligible rewards and Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) that count toward status. TQPs are earned by Amtrak travel during a calendar year. Do not confuse your reward balance with progress toward a tier.

Check award availability and route coverage

Amtrak lists reward travel, upgrades, lounge passes and other options. The points required depend on the trip and reward availability; not every train has an award seat. Current terms also identify excluded services, including some Thruway and Canadian segments of joint Amtrak/VIA service. Check each segment when an itinerary crosses networks.

How Points & Cash works

Log in at Amtrak.com or in the Amtrak app, search with the Use Points option, select a trip and choose the points-and-cash split at checkout. Amtrak says this booking type cannot be changed after purchase. If you cancel, the points portion returns to the member account and the cash portion is refunded to the original payment method, subject to the ticket terms.

The current FAQ says the cash-paid portion earns points and TQPs at standard rates. The feature is available online and in the app, not through station or phone booking.

Before booking

Confirm the travelling passenger, date, route and reward seat.
Check service exclusions and any partner-operated portion.
Read the selected ticket's cancellation rules before using Points & Cash.
Keep the confirmation and note how points and cash are refunded if canceled.
Recheck terms and status thresholds before relying on an older article.
