How to redeem Avis Preferred Points

How do you redeem Avis Preferred Points for a rental?

The rules here come from the Avis Preferred Loyalty Program Terms and Conditions for the United States and Canada, updated January 6, 2025. [1] They apply to Avis Preferred members in that market, and the redemption market covers the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. [1]

Avis Preferred Points are available to members of the Avis Preferred program, and Avis says a member must opt in to earn points on qualifying rentals and optional products and services. [1] If a member holds two or more Wizard Numbers and opts in on at least one eligible profile, all eligible profiles are automatically opted in, and rental activity is aggregated into one balance that can be viewed or redeemed from any profile with Avis Preferred status or above. [1]

Redemptions are limited to participating Avis locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. [1] Points can be earned at participating Avis locations worldwide, but they cannot be redeemed outside those four markets. [1] A list of non-participating locations is published under the program’s terms. [1]

Every redemption requires an advance reservation and is subject to availability of the requested item at the time of reservation. [1] Avis advertises reward days with no blackout dates [2]; the program terms separately state that redemptions are subject to availability when the reservation is made. [1]

A reward can cover non-discounted rental days valued up to USD $225, exclusive of products, taxes, fees and surcharges. [1] The reward-day table uses the standard base rate, which excludes any Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD), special rates or other offers. [2] Rentals shorter than 24 hours and rentals or extensions beyond 28 days are not eligible for point redemption. [1]

How many points do Avis reward days cost?

Avis groups reward days into four levels based on the standard base rate, car class and location of the rental. [2] The table shows the points required per day. [2]

What else can you redeem Avis Preferred Points for?

Beyond rental days, Avis lists car-class upgrades and optional products as designated rewards. [1] Optional products include car seats, booster seats, infant seats, GPS devices, Extended Roadside Assistance, satellite radio and ski racks. [1] All insurance or optional protection products are excluded from redemption, including ALI, PAI and PEP. [1]

If an optional product is damaged, lost or stolen, the renter is responsible for the replacement cost, and points cannot be used to offset it. [1] Points have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, exchanged or transferred. [1] Avis may allow unredeemed points to be transferred to a family member or friend who is an active Avis Preferred member after a member’s death, or between members after an adjudicated divorce settlement, at Avis’s discretion and after reviewing documents. What are the main limits and exceptions?

• Expiry. Points are valid for 60 months from when they were earned and are forfeited if the member does not exercise any redemption within that period. [1] Points earned by residents of Ontario, Canada do not expire, although they may be canceled for inactivity. [1]
• Inactivity. Avis may forfeit points without notice if a member is inactive. [1] A member is inactive if, during a 12-month period, they have no eligible rental at a participating Avis location, do not earn or redeem any points, or their account is canceled. [1]
• Membership cancellation. If a member cancels Avis Preferred membership, the member also opts out of Avis Preferred Points, and all unredeemed points are forfeited immediately and cannot be reinstated or transferred. [1] Moving to an ineligible country of residence is treated as cancellation by the member. [1]
• Changing a reward reservation. Changes are allowed only if they do not change the number of points required, such as an email address, flight number or credit card. [1] Any other change requires canceling the reservation before the check-out date and rebooking, which may change the points required and may carry fees. [1] If a member does not cancel before the reservation check-out date, the points used for the reservation are forfeited. [1]
• Location leaves the program. If a participating location exits the program after a reservation is made but before the rental, Avis will use reasonable efforts to have the location honor the reservation or arrange an equivalent rental nearby, but it cannot guarantee that rewards or upgrades will be honored. [1]
• Program changes. Avis may change the program and its terms at any time, including redemption levels and availability rules, but it will give notice if changes materially decrease earning or materially increase the points needed for a rental. [1] The terms posted at the time of the rental govern the transaction. [1]
• Taxes. Members are responsible for any income or other taxes on points and benefits. [1]

Can I use Avis Preferred Points for any Avis rental?

How many points do I need for a reward rental day?
