Award stopover rules compared
Award stopover rules compared: Qantas prices oneworld Classic Flight Rewards on total distance travelled or return flights and caps one itinerary at 35,000 miles [3], while the KrisFlyer terms exclude fares that include segments not operated by Singapore Airlines, naming round-the-world itineraries as an example [8].
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The two programmes checked measure an award itinerary in different ways: Qantas prices oneworld Classic Flight Rewards on total distance travelled or return flights and caps one itinerary at 35,000 miles [3], while the KrisFlyer restriction published here concerns which airlines may operate the segments [8].
- A oneworld Classic Flight Reward may use only oneworld member airlines and their affiliates, and must include travel on at least two oneworld member airlines other than Qantas [3].
- Qantas prices oneworld Classic Flight Rewards differently from its other Classic options, so a routing condition attached to one product does not describe the other [3].
The routing unit each programme publishes
Qantas sells Classic Flight Rewards at a fixed points amount year-round, excluding taxes, fees and carrier charges, on eligible flights with Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates, oneworld member airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer partners and affiliates [3]. The page separates two products: ordinary Classic Flight Reward options are based on one-way Trips, whereas oneworld Classic Flight Rewards are based on the total distance travelled or on return flights [3].
The oneworld product carries three published conditions. Seating is limited to oneworld member airlines and can include travel on no other airline; the itinerary may run to a maximum of 35,000 miles; and it must include travel on at least two oneworld member airlines other than Qantas [3].
KrisFlyer approaches routing from the carrier side instead. Miles can be redeemed for award tickets and upgrades on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines [8]. Miles cannot be used for corporate fares, group fares, or any fare that includes a segment not operated by Singapore Airlines, with the terms naming codeshares, interline, round-the-world itineraries and flights not operated by Singapore Airlines as examples [8]. The parallel restriction applies on Scoot's website and app to itineraries that include segments not operated by Scoot [8].
Where a booking mixes a reward seat with a cash fare, Qantas applies the most restrictive fare condition of the non-reward fare to the segments booked as a Flight Reward for changes, cancellations and refunds [3].
What is not published on stopovers
Neither page states how many stops an award itinerary may include, how long a stop may last, whether an open-jaw is permitted, or what a stopover adds to the points or cash cost [3] [8].
The closest thing to a published definition is incidental. Inside the conditions of a limited-time discount on Australian Classic Flight Rewards, Qantas uses the word Transfer for a domestic connection on the same day, or for an international flight within 24 hours [3]. That sentence governs eligibility for that offer, and the offer also excludes trips that contain such a transfer [3].
Singapore Airlines reserves the right to modify the award structure, award levels, availability of awards, redemption levels and availability of redemption seats, and the rules for use of awards and redemption travel, without prior notice [8].
Fees, booking windows and changes
Classic Flight Rewards are bookable up to 353 days in advance [3]. On the Qantas website the cut-off is two hours before departure for flights within Australia and four hours before departure for international flights, while bookings through Qantas Contact Centres must be made at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, with some locations requiring earlier booking [3]. A Reward Assistance fee applies to Classic Flight Reward bookings made through those contact centres; it is waived for Platinum One members booking Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Upgrade Rewards with points through the centres, and all other fees continue to apply [3].
Taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable by accepted payment card in addition to the points required, and both the points and those charges are quoted at the time of booking and subject to change; Qantas marks the figures on the page as accurate as at 10 October 2025 [3]. A change to a Classic Flight Reward may require additional points where a fare difference applies, and Classic and Classic Plus Flight Rewards share the same reward change and cancellation fees [3].
On the KrisFlyer side, each redemption is subject to a minimum number of miles published on singaporeair.com and subject to change [8]. For redemptions against Singapore Airlines and Scoot fares, taxes and selected ancillaries booked on singaporeair.com or Scoot's own channels, the miles redemption rate at the time of ticket issuance applies; after a reissue the rate then in force applies to any additional charges, and no miles are refunded because the rate changed after issuance [8]. Tickets redeemed fully or partly with KrisFlyer miles are non-endorsable regardless of fare conditions [8].
Exceptions and limits
- Product split at Qantas. The one-way pricing of ordinary Classic Flight Rewards and the distance or return basis of oneworld Classic Flight Rewards are separate rules, and the 35,000-mile maximum and the two-carrier requirement attach only to the oneworld product as described on that page [3].
- Availability. Classic Flight Rewards are subject to capacity controls and limited availability, and some flights may have none at all [3].
- Booking channel. KrisFlyer miles cannot be used to redeem tickets purchased through travel agents, Singapore Airlines ticket offices or call centres, or Scoot ticket offices or call centres [8]. Qantas, by contrast, accepts Classic Flight Reward bookings through its contact centres subject to the Reward Assistance fee [3].
- Who the ticket is for. KrisFlyer miles can cover all or part of the member's own airfare or the airfare of any of up to five redemption nominees [8]; Qantas allows a Classic Flight Reward booking for the member or an eligible family member [3].
- Promotional conditions. The Qantas discount mentioned above does not apply to a trip that includes a same-day domestic transfer or an international flight within 24 hours, and the whole eligible trip must be in Economy for the discount to apply [3]. Those conditions belong to that offer, not to the award generally [3].
