How to use KrisFlyer award stopovers: routing rules and limits
KrisFlyer award stopovers are the stops, open jaws and extra connections a member might want to build into an award itinerary paid for with Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles.
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- KrisFlyer miles can be used for award tickets, upgrade awards and redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines. [5]
- Using miles to offset a Singapore Airlines or Scoot fare is a separate mechanism in the same terms, with its own channel limits and carrier-specific operating rules. [5]
- Singapore Airlines may change award structures, award levels, award availability and the rules for use of awards and redemption travel without prior notice. [5]
What the terms cover
KrisFlyer miles may be redeemed for award tickets, upgrade awards or redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines. [5] The programme's overview describes miles as usable for flights, upgrades and experiences, and as earnable on Star Alliance airlines where eligible. [2] The Chinese-language edition of the programme page likewise describes redeeming miles for flights and cabin upgrades, or for offsetting travel, shopping and dining spend. [4]
The terms also contain a separate mechanism, under the heading "Redemption with KrisFlyer miles on Singapore Airlines and Scoot": using miles to offset the cash price of a Singapore Airlines or Scoot fare booked on singaporeair.com, FlyScoot.com or the Scoot app. [5] The statements below belong to that subsection and describe the fare-offset mechanism, not award-ticket redemptions or partner awards. Within it, a member may choose to redeem for all or part of their own airfare or the airfare of any of their five redemption nominees. [5] Each redemption is subject to a minimum number of KrisFlyer miles utilised, published on singaporeair.com and subject to change by Singapore Airlines. [5] The Miles Redemption Rate is defined as the number of KrisFlyer miles to offset per dollar of spend; it is published on singaporeair.com and is subject to change by the airline. The rate at the time of ticket issuance applies, and in the event of reissuance the rate at the time of reissuance applies to any additional charges, with no refund of KrisFlyer miles if the rate changes after issuance or reissuance. [5]
The same subsection adds that tickets redeemed fully or partially with KrisFlyer miles are non-endorsable, regardless of the fare conditions. [5] Only KrisFlyer miles pay for awards: Elite miles are tracked separately, cannot be used for award flights or upgrade awards, and cannot be used to buy airfares. [3] [5] [6]
Stopovers, open jaws and connections
The terms state that Singapore Airlines may set and revise the rules for use of awards and redemption travel and the cities served, along with award structure, award levels and award availability, and redemption structure, redemption levels and availability of redemption seats. [5]
The same documents do not publish which routings are permitted between a given origin and destination, or whether adding a stopover changes the miles required. [5] Nothing in them extends another Star Alliance programme's stopover rules to KrisFlyer awards. [5]
The routing restrictions the terms do publish belong to paying for fares with miles, and they differ by carrier. Miles cannot be used to pay for corporate fares or group fares. For a Singapore Airlines fare, miles cannot be used to pay for any fare that includes a flight segment not operated by Singapore Airlines, such as codeshares, interline and round-the-world itineraries. For a Scoot booking made on FlyScoot.com or the Scoot app, miles cannot be used to pay for an itinerary that includes a flight segment not operated by Scoot, such as codeshares, interline and round-the-world itineraries. [5] The same subsection sets channel limits: miles cannot be used to redeem for tickets purchased through travel agents, Singapore Airlines ticket offices or call centres, or Scoot ticket offices or call centres. [5] On Scoot, use is also confined to the initial point of booking, since the terms state that miles cannot be used to offset any further fees or purchases in "Manage My Booking" or at the check-in counter. [5]
A further option exists for Scoot award tickets: miles may be redeemed for tickets for travel in Economy Class on selected Scoot flights booked on FlyScoot.com or the Scoot mobile app, under separate Scoot award ticket terms that the KrisFlyer terms reference. [5]
Availability and changes
Singapore Airlines reserves the right to modify the KrisFlyer programme, its benefits and its terms at its sole discretion without prior notice, including programme partners, the rules for earning or using miles, award structure and award availability, redemption structure and seat availability, and the rules for use of awards and redemption travel. [5] Awards from programme partners depend on the partner's continued participation in KrisFlyer. [5]
A member planning a multi-city redemption therefore cannot confirm a stopover limit from this page alone, because the terms leave those travel rules to be set and revised by the airline. [5] For step-by-step booking mechanics, see how to book KrisFlyer awards.
Exceptions and limits
- Miles are personal to the member: membership cannot be transferred, sold or bartered, pooling of miles is not permitted, and joint accounts and multiple memberships are not allowed. [5]
- Changing the person an award is booked for is a paid service; KrisFlyer miles may be used for service fees including the change of redemption nominees and the extension of expiring miles. [5]
- An account with no recorded activity for 45 consecutive months from the last recorded activity may be closed without prior notice, and an account with no recorded activity for 24 consecutive months from the start of membership may also be closed. [5]
- If membership is terminated, accrued KrisFlyer miles, status credits and rewards are revoked and forfeited without compensation, and miles cannot be transferred to anyone else. [5]
- Missing miles are not corrected indefinitely: members are asked to report discrepancies within three months of the transaction, and retroactive credit requests are accepted for processing within six months of the transaction date. [5]
