How to handle after-hours car rental pickup and return

After-hours car rental pickup and return is collecting or dropping off a rental car outside a branch's staffed hours; the written rental terms then govern payment, identification, fuel and timing conditions. [7] Pickup conditions are location-specific: Sixt's United States rental information sets several conditions by state and separately for airport and downtown branches, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car sends renters travelling outside the United States to country-level help pages. Key takeaways

  • At Sixt, a rental day is each consecutive 24-hour period beginning after the start time of the rental, so the start time sets the 24-hour clock for the booking. [7]
  • A valid physical payment card in the renter's name must be presented at pick-up even when the booking was paid online, and Sixt does not accept prepaid credit cards, checks or cash. [7]
  • Sixt may charge additional full or partial days for a late return, and an unreported extension can add a USD 20.00 Flexi Return service fee. [7]
  • Fuel level and electric-vehicle charge level are agreed at handover and checked at return, so returning the vehicle below the agreed level can produce a charge. [7]

What should you confirm before an after-hours pickup?

The payment method is the first thing to settle. Sixt requires the method to be issued under the renter's name and physically presented at pick-up, and the card must remain valid for the entire rental period. [7] That applies to prepaid bookings too: whatever was charged online, a valid physical card in the renter's name still has to be shown at pick-up to place the security hold and to pay for any add-ons. [7] Sixt does not accept prepaid credit cards, checks or cash, and Chime cards are accepted only at the end of the rental, once the vehicle has been returned. [7]

Debit cards carry extra conditions at Sixt. For renters using a card issued in the United States, debit cards are accepted at all airport locations only when the renter shows a booked return flight, train or bus ticket in their own name matching the rental's return date and made at least 24 hours before pick-up, and the vehicle category is not one of the excluded codes. [7] International renters have a separate route at airport locations: they may present a debit card issued in their country of origin when the vehicle category is not a Sports & Luxury vehicle. [7] At downtown locations the renter shows either that ticket or two current utility or cable bills, a lease agreement, or a credit card statement from the pick-up state matching the name and address on the driver's license, and the vehicle category must also not be excluded. [7]

Identification follows the same pattern. The renter and any authorized drivers must present a valid, unexpired original driver's license that stays valid for the whole rental period, and digital licenses, photocopies and learner permits are not accepted. [7] The minimum age to rent from Sixt is 21, except in New York and for Government renters, where it is 18, and renters under 25 are restricted to certain vehicle categories. [7] A license printed in a non-Roman alphabet must be complemented by an international driving license. [7]

Budget for the hold as well as the rate. At pick-up Sixt authorizes the payment method for the rental price, all extras and a security hold set by the vehicle driven, and those funds are not available to the renter during the rental. [7] The minimum authorization depends on where the car is collected:

Sixt minimum authorization at pick-up, by collection location
Collection locationMinimum authorization
Non-airport locations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.Rental amount + USD 400, rising for premium, luxury and sports categories [7]
Non-airport locations in Texas, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Illinois and IndianaRental amount + USD 300, rising for premium, luxury and sports categories [7]
All other Sixt locationsRental amount + USD 200, rising for premium, luxury and sports categories [7]

If the collection time could slip, read the change and cancellation rules before booking. A Sixt prepaid booking can be changed up to one hour before the rental starts, subject to availability, and money already paid is not refunded. [7] Cancelling more than 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up carries a USD 100 fee excluding tax, cancelling within 24 hours carries USD 200 excluding tax, and a cancellation or change made within 24 hours of booking is free when the pick-up is more than 48 hours away. [7] No refund is issued for a cancellation after the scheduled pick-up time, and failing to pick up the vehicle is treated as a no-show with no refund. [7]

How is the rental day counted when you collect late?

Sixt defines a rental day as each consecutive 24-hour period beginning after the start time of the rental, so the collection moment sets the rhythm for the whole booking. [7] Returning the vehicle later than agreed can trigger charges for additional full or partial days, priced on the shorter hire duration, and if Sixt is not told about the extension it may add a USD 20.00 Flexi Return service fee. [7] Keeping the vehicle beyond the agreed date and time without contacting Sixt puts the rental into the company's standard overdue process. [7]

Extensions at Sixt are handled online or by telephone on +1 888 SIXT CAR, and can run until the 28th day of the rental as long as the driver's license covers the new period, the incremental authorization on the payment method is processed and the vehicle has enough remaining days and mileage. [7] Anything past the 28th day has to be written as a new rental agreement, and at non-airport locations in Texas and Illinois extensions cannot be arranged by telephone at all, so the renter has to come into the branch. [7]

Coming back early has its own price. A prepaid Sixt booking gets no refund for an early return. [7] On a "Pay later" or "Flexible" rate, Sixt gives a partial discount for unused rental days equal to 50% of the price difference; the source's table separately lists a maximum amount payable by the customer for early returns of USD 200.00. [7] The prepaid section adds that no refunds or credits are issued for unused rental days once the vehicle is rented. [7]

What has to be settled when the car goes back out of hours?

Fuel and charge levels are money items on a drop-off. Sixt typically hands over a vehicle with a full tank or battery charge, and a renter who buys the tank or charge upfront should not refuel or recharge but must bring the vehicle back with at least a 20% charge, with no refund for unused fuel or battery. [7] Without that option, a vehicle returned with less fuel is charged at the price per gallon stated on the rental agreement, while one returned full or at the level it was received carries no fuel charge. [7]

Electric vehicles work on a recorded charge level. The renter must return the car at the charge level stated on the agreement, Sixt records that level at handover and at return, and a vehicle handed over above 80% must come back at 80% or higher, while one handed over below 80% must come back at a corresponding level. [7] Returning it lower means Sixt charges for recharging at the price stated in the agreement. [7]

Further items in Sixt's terms can affect the final bill. Using an automated toll lane without a personal transponder costs an administrative fee of USD 15.99 per usage day, capped at USD 99 per rental agreement, plus the toll itself. [7] One-way rentals within Sixt locations are usually allowed with additional fees, an unannounced one-way move may attract a further fee, and international one-way rentals are not allowed. [7] Changing the payment method on file during an open rental or at the return means visiting the nearest Sixt location, and a refund to the original payment method can take up to 15 business days. [7]

Exceptions and limits

  • PayPal. Prepaid bookings can be paid through PayPal only at listed Sixt locations, the renter must be the PayPal account holder, and a valid physical card in the renter's name is still required at pick-up to secure the rental. [7]
  • Apple Pay. It is accepted only for prepaid reservations made through the Sixt website or app, a credit card must be chosen in the Apple Wallet, and Apple Pay is not accepted at the counter except at select pilot locations. [7]
  • Damage at return. The Partial Damage Waiver removes the renter's responsibility for the first USD 1,500.00 of damage or loss, with liability above that, and it is not available in all states; the Loss Damage Waiver with minimum deductible is not available for selected high-end sports and luxury vehicles. [7]
  • Long rentals. Sixt accepts reservations of up to 365 days, processes anything over 28 days in 28-day increments, provides the first rental agreement at pick-up and emails later ones, which the renter must review, sign electronically and add the current mileage to. [7]
  • Country-level difference. Enterprise Rent-A-Car keeps a separate Worldwide FAQs page for renters travelling outside the United States, alongside its United States help topics on picking up and returning a vehicle. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Can I collect a Sixt car with a debit card?

At airport locations, Sixt accepts debit cards issued in the United States when the renter shows a return flight, train or bus ticket in their name matching the return date and made at least 24 hours before pick-up, and the vehicle category is not one of the excluded codes; a debit card issued in an international renter's country of origin may instead be presented at airport locations when the vehicle category is not a Sports & Luxury vehicle. [7] At downtown locations Sixt accepts debit cards with that ticket or with two current utility or cable bills, a lease agreement or a credit card statement matching the license address, and the vehicle category must not be one of the excluded codes. [7]

What happens if I return the car later than the agreed time?

Sixt may charge additional full or partial days, and if the extension is not reported it may add a USD 20.00 Flexi Return service fee. [7] Holding on to the vehicle without contacting Sixt sends the rental into its standard overdue process. [7]

Do I need to refuel before dropping the car off?

If you bought the tank or charge upfront, do not refuel or recharge, but return the vehicle with at least a 20% charge. [7] Otherwise fuel used is charged at the price per gallon on the rental agreement, and returning the vehicle full or at the same level as collected avoids a fuel charge. [7]

Can I switch the payment card when I hand the keys back?

Sixt asks renters who want to change the payment method on file during an open rental or at the vehicle return to visit the nearest Sixt location. [7]
