How to book a cross-alliance award itinerary
Cross-alliance award itineraries are award trips that place flights from airlines in different alliances into one journey. Where the miles come from United MileagePlus, routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual partner airlines, and a MileagePlus award ticket may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6]

Key takeaways
- United leaves partner award routing and destinations to the individual travel partners, and partner offers are governed by the applicable partner's terms. [6]
- A MileagePlus award ticket may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6]
- Awards are valid only to destinations served both when the ticket is issued and at departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that cancel service to a destination. [6]
- Benefits such as an additional baggage allowance require the member's MileagePlus number to stay on the whole reservation and on any later reservations created from it. [6]
Whose rules apply when one award mixes airlines?
United's programme rules treat airline partners as independent businesses: United says it is not responsible for the nature or quality of products or services those partners provide, and partner offers are governed by the terms and conditions set out by the applicable partner. [6]
For flights in particular, the rules state that routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners. [6]
United also reserves the right to deny the redemption of mileage, or the accrual of mileage, in connection with the use of any partner product or service where that is prohibited by law or otherwise. [6] The rules note that members may not be able to obtain all offered benefits or awards, or use awards to all destinations or on all flights. [6] For step-by-step checks before booking, see the partner award booking checklist and the guide to booking awards on codeshare flights.
What protection applies when a mixed itinerary is disrupted?
A MileagePlus award ticket may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6] That may place the operating carrier's own re-accommodation policy behind each flight in the journey. [6]
The rules also cap the programme's own liability: awards for travel are valid only to destinations served both at the time the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that result in the cancellation of service to any destination. [6]
Where a member does not comply with any published award rules for air travel, United may at its sole discretion accommodate the member on a different flight than originally selected, seat them in a lower class of service, deny ticketing or boarding, or take other action provided in the rules, and the member is not entitled to compensation in connection with that action. [6] How that plays out across carriers is covered in single-ticket protection across alliances and the glossary entry for an interline agreement.
How do changes and cancellations work?
After an award ticket or other award is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation requested by the member. [6] When a redeemed award is later cancelled or returned in line with the programme's applicable rules and the ticketed fare rules in force at that time — or, as applicable, the partner's rules — the miles taken for it are redeposited, subject to a service charge, and some awards may not be eligible for redeposit of miles and will so state. [6]
United keeps broad discretion over the award itself, including the right to withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award, increase the miles, cash or co-pays required, add blackout dates, or limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations, with or without notice, even where changes affect the value of miles already accumulated. [6]
How do baggage and status benefits carry across a mixed itinerary?
Benefits received at the time of booking, check-in or travel — premium seating, fee waivers, additional baggage allowance, lounge access and other travel benefits — require the member to maintain their MileagePlus account number throughout the entire reservation and any subsequent reservations created from the original, and for the entire duration of the original and future travel associated with those reservations. [6]
If a companion receives a benefit by virtue of a member's status and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion is no longer eligible for the Premier and other benefits obtained as a result of the member's status or other benefit allowance. [6] Status-based benefits, including baggage allowance, are based on the member's Premier status at the time of travel rather than at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [6] See baggage rules across alliances for the segment-by-segment picture.
When should a cross-alliance trip become two awards?
A service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation requested after an award ticket is issued. [6] If a trip is held as two awards, cancellation and redeposit on each ticket then follow the programme rules and the ticketed fare rules in force at the time, or the partner's rules as applicable. [6]
Splitting also separates the protection question, because a single award ticket may be subject to the operating carrier's own contract of carriage and re-accommodation policies, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that cancel service to a destination. [6] Work through the connections in the separate-ticket connection checklist before deciding which structure to hold.
Exceptions and limits
- Awards are valid only to destinations served both at the time of issuance of the award ticket and at the time of departure. [6]
- United states no liability for partner withdrawals from the programme, for award or offer changes including changes to the amount of mileage offered, or for cancellations caused by partner withdrawals, including cancellations of awards. [6]
- United may change the criteria for partner offers or impose other restrictions on the use of partner offers or awards, with or without notice. [6]
- Some awards may not be eligible for redeposit of miles and will so state. [6]
- Except as otherwise expressly permitted by United from time to time, award miles and Premier qualifying credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [6]
Frequently asked questions
Can one United award ticket include airlines from two different alliances?
United's rules state that routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners, and that partner offers are governed by the applicable partner's terms. [6]
Who rebooks me if a flight in a mixed itinerary is cancelled?
A MileagePlus award ticket may be subject to the re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled, and United states that neither it nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that cancel service to a destination. [6]
Can I change one half of a cross-alliance award?
A service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation requested after an award ticket is issued, and any redeposit of miles follows the programme rules and the ticketed fare rules at the time, or the partner's rules as applicable. [6]
Do I keep my extra baggage allowance on the partner airline?
An additional baggage allowance is among the benefits that require the MileagePlus account number to stay on the entire reservation and on any subsequent reservations created from it, for the full duration of travel. [6]
Do I earn miles on an award ticket?
Except as otherwise expressly permitted by United from time to time, award miles and Premier qualifying credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [6]
