Domestic first vs business class: what airlines publish

Domestic first and business class are the premium cabins sold on flights within one country, and what a fare includes — the seat, the meals, lounge access, baggage and change rights — is set out by each airline on its own product pages rather than by any shared industry standard. [5] JetBlue's Mint is one such published product: every Mint seat converts to a fully lie-flat bed, and the fare tier you buy — Mint Base, Mint or Mint Flex — decides the checked bags, lounge access and change terms. Key takeaways

  • Mint is JetBlue's business-class product, sold on all JetBlue transatlantic flights and on select coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights. [5]
  • All Mint seats and suites convert to a fully lie-flat bed; on Airbus A321LR and A321neo aircraft with Mint, every seat is a private suite with direct aisle access, while on the A321 Classic with Mint only rows 2 and 4 are suites. [5]
  • Complimentary BlueHouse lounge entry at New York JFK and Boston comes with Mint and Mint Flex fares but not with Mint Base, unless the traveller is otherwise eligible or buys access. [5]
  • Mint and Mint Flex fares carry no change or cancellation fees, while fees apply to changes and cancellations on Mint Base fares. [5]

What is sold as domestic first or business class?

JetBlue presents Mint as its business-class experience, and the product is sold under three fares: Mint Base, Mint and Mint Flex. [5] Mint is available on all JetBlue transatlantic flights and on select coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights. [5] Because the fare tier, not the seat, sets the airport and flexibility benefits, two passengers in identical Mint suites can travel on different bag allowances and different change rights. [5]

Mint seats can be bought with TrueBlue points as well as with cash. [5] The payment form has to match the booking: travellers on redemption tickets must use points to enjoy Mint, and travellers on revenue tickets must use cash or credit. [5] There is no government or military rate for Mint, because JetBlue states that government contracts do not allow business-class flights of less than 14 hours in duration. [5]

How lie-flat are Mint's seats and suites?

All Mint seats and suites convert to a fully lie-flat bed in seconds, with Tuft & Needle T&N Adaptive Foam cushions and a T&N-designed pillow and comforter. [5] JetBlue states that its flat beds are the longest in the U.S. domestic premium market, at up to 6'8" long. [5]

Privacy depends on the aircraft. On the A321LR and A321neo with Mint, every Mint seat is a private suite with direct aisle access; on the A321 Classic with Mint, rows 2 and 4 are suites. [5] The front-row Mint Studio, offered on the A321LR and A321neo, adds a 22-inch screen that JetBlue describes as the largest on a U.S. airline, a mirrored vanity, extra storage and a guest seat with a table. [5] Every seat has a touchscreen television, in-seat power, mood lighting and stowage nooks, plus amenities from Dr. Dennis Gross skincare in a Caraa bag, and the A321LR and A321neo add wireless charging. [5] Entertainment runs to a 15-inch or larger screen with on-demand shows and live television, noise-isolating headphones — Master & Dynamic on transatlantic flights, Thinksound on all others — and free high-speed Wi-Fi. [5]

Mint has no under-seat stowage, so carry-on bags must go in the overhead bin, and Mint customers are allowed the same carry-on allowance as Main customers: one carry-on bag plus one personal item. [5]

What meals and drinks are included?

Mint serves a restaurant-inspired small-plates menu curated with the New York restaurant Crown Shy for lunch and dinner and with Birdee for breakfast on most flights. [5] That menu excludes departures from the Caribbean and Latin America and summer seasonal routes departing Europe. [5] The bar includes cocktails developed with the speakeasy PDT and an artisan wine list curated by Grant Reynolds of Parcelle. [5]

The service depends on departure time. Flights leaving before 9:46am are served breakfast, flights leaving between 9:47am and 7pm — and westbound flights leaving at 7pm or later — are served lunch or dinner, and eastbound-only flights leaving at 7pm or later get the Shuteye menu. [5] An express Savor & Sleep evening service runs on all coast-to-coast flights within the U.S. departing after 8pm and is available as an option on all transatlantic lunch and dinner flights. [5] Special menus cover Kosher (except on flights departing the Caribbean and Costa Rica), Vegetarian/Vegan, Low Calorie, Gluten-free and Plane Eats, and must be ordered at least 24 hours before departure. [5]

Which airport perks, bags and lounges come with Mint?

Mint comes with dedicated Mint check-in, Group 1 boarding, priority bag handling and up to two free checked bags. [5] Priority security is included automatically for all Mint customers at the select airports where it is offered. [5] Complimentary BlueHouse lounge entry at New York JFK and Boston is included when travelling on a Mint or Mint Flex fare; travellers on a Mint Base fare do not receive access unless they are otherwise eligible or buy it, and Mosaic 4 members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers are eligible for complimentary access even on a Mint Base fare. JetBlue publishes these differences as a direct comparison of the three Mint fares, so the bag count and lounge answer both follow from the fare code on the booking. [5] The second checked bag is free on Mint and Mint Flex, while a Mint Base fare includes the first bag free and requires payment for additional bags. [5]

How do the change and cancellation terms differ?

Change and cancellation fees depend on the Mint fare booked: Mint and Mint Flex carry no fees for changes or cancellations, and fees apply on Mint Base. [5] On a change, you can rebook to any flight through the end of JetBlue's current schedule, and a fare difference may apply. [5] JetBlue notes that a change is subject to the fare difference and the fare rules applicable on the date of the change, and that funds are issued as a JetBlue travel credit valid for 12 months from the original ticketing date. [5]

For voluntary cancellations, funds go to a JetBlue Travel Bank credit, or to JetBlue Vacations credit for JetBlue Vacations bookings, and the credit can be used for future travel to any JetBlue destination and by any traveller. [5] Same-day switches can be made after midnight on the day of travel with no fare difference, but they cannot be completed through an agency, and the same-day switch benefit available to TrueBlue Mosaic members is not offered on Mint Base fares. [5] A same-day change may go from Mint to Mint or from Mint to Main only; if Mint is available and you hold a Main or EvenMore seat and want to confirm Mint, the ticket must be exchanged and any difference in fare paid. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • If you book Mint and volunteer to go standby on an earlier flight that has no Mint cabin, you forfeit the Mint experience with no compensation. [5]
  • Moving up to Mint at the airport for an additional fee does not include free priority security, additional checked bags or bonus TrueBlue points, and the checked bag allowance stays based on the original fare purchased. [5]
  • TrueBlue points cannot be used to move from a Main seat to Mint at the airport; points can only be redeemed for new Mint bookings. [5]
  • Mosaic members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers receive no complimentary space-available upgrades to Mint, and their space-available upgrades apply only on flights offering the BlueFirst experience. [5]
  • Mint has no under-seat stowage, so no pets are allowed in Mint, and unaccompanied minors cannot be booked in Mint seats; there are no age restrictions for children, and any Mint customer may travel with one lap infant under the age of 2. [5]
  • TrueBlue points are earned on the fare paid rather than on the cabin travelled, so paying to move to Mint at the airport earns no additional points. [5]

Frequently asked questions

Do Mint passengers get lounge access?

Complimentary BlueHouse entry at New York JFK and Boston is included on Mint and Mint Flex fares. [5] Mint Base passengers need to be otherwise eligible — Mosaic 4 members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers are — or buy access separately. [5]

How many checked bags come with a Mint ticket?

A Mint Base fare includes one free checked bag, while Mint and Mint Flex fares include two. [5]

Can I change or cancel a Mint ticket without a fee?

Can I redeem TrueBlue points for Mint?

Yes, Mint seats are available for purchase with TrueBlue points, and a redemption booking must use points throughout. [5] Points cannot be used to move an existing Main seat up to Mint at the airport. [5]
