How to qualify for Etihad Guest tiers and benefits

Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, and it has five tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald — that members climb by earning Tier Miles within a 12-month period. [2] [5] Tier Miles are separate from the spendable Etihad Guest Miles, last 12 months and are not extended. [6]

Key takeaways

  • Etihad Guest runs five tiers, from Bronze up to Emerald, and members move up by earning the required number of Tier Miles within 12 months. [2] [4]
  • Etihad calculates upgrade, retention and downgrade of tier status every year from the Tier Miles earned in the preceding 12 months, and Tier Miles are valid for 12 months with no extension. [6]
  • Etihad Guest Miles expire when a member goes 18 months without a Qualifying Activity, on the last day of that 18th month at 23:30 Gulf Standard Time. [6]
  • Platinum and Emerald members keep their Etihad Guest Miles while they hold the tier; after a downgrade the whole balance gets 18 months from the downgrade date. [6]

What are the Etihad Guest tiers?

Etihad Guest has five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald. [2] Bronze is where a new member starts, and Emerald is the top of the ladder. [5] Progress comes from Tier Miles rather than from the miles a member spends, and Etihad describes Tier Miles as the currency used to reach higher tiers and unlock more benefits. [2] [5]

Etihad illustrates the climb with a worked example: earning 25,000 Tier Miles in a year, with 10,000 of them from flying, takes a member from Bronze to Silver and brings extra benefits such as lounge access in Abu Dhabi. [3] [5] The full requirements and benefits for each tier are published on Etihad's Tiers and benefits page. [2] Because Tier Segments have been discontinued, Tier Miles are the only way for a member to attain, retain or upgrade tier status. [6]

How do you earn Tier Miles toward Etihad Guest status?

Only Qualifying Fares on flights actually flown by the member earn Tier Miles, and the amount is based on the Fare Brand of the revenue ticket that was paid for — complimentary upgrades and Upgrade Rewards do not produce Tier Miles. [6] Members must quote their full name and Etihad Guest Number when they book or check in. [6] Tier Miles fall into two groups: those from Qualifying Flights with Etihad Airways or its Etihad Guest partner airlines, and those from non-airline transactions such as co-branded credit cards, payment cards and Miles on the Go partners. [6]

What benefits does Etihad Guest status include?

Etihad describes the benefits as growing with each tier, naming complimentary chauffeur services and access to its lounges among the privileges that open up as members progress. [2] In its explanation of how tiers work, the programme gives lounge access in Abu Dhabi as an example of what a Silver member gains over Bronze. [5]

The published terms also set out card and baggage-tag replacement charges that vary by tier. [6]

Tier-related card and tag allowances
TierPublished allowance
All membersA replacement Etihad Guest Card costs 500 Etihad Guest Miles, a luggage tag costs 1,000, and both together cost 1,250 [6]
GoldOne free card replacement per 12-month period, provided no free replacement was issued in the preceding 12 months [6]
Platinum and EmeraldCard and luggage-tag replacements free of charge at any time [6]

On the miles side, the Etihad Guest Miles balance of a Platinum or Emerald member does not expire while that tier status is maintained. [6] Once a Platinum or Emerald member is downgraded, the validity of the total miles balance becomes 18 months from the downgrade date. [6]

How does renewal and downgrade work?

Etihad reviews tier status every year and calculates the upgrade, retention or downgrade from the Tier Miles earned in the preceding 12 months. [6] Tier Miles do not carry over: they are valid for a 12-month period and Etihad states there will be no extension of their validity. [6] Etihad may also award bonus Tier Miles to all members, to selected members or to an individual member at its discretion. [6]

Etihad Guest Miles are protected differently from tier status. A Qualifying Activity extends the validity of the miles balance by 18 months, and without one the balance expires on the last day of the 18th month after the last Qualifying Activity, at 23:30 Gulf Standard Time. [6] Separately, after 36 continuous months of account inactivity Etihad reserves the right to terminate the membership. [6] The terms are effective as at the date of their publication and may be changed or modified at any time. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Flights that do not happen. No Etihad Guest Miles or Tier Miles are granted where a Qualifying Flight is not flown, including cancellations for reasons beyond the airline's control such as adverse weather; if a disruption means the member is not rerouted and the ticket is refunded, nothing is credited. [6]
  • Family membership. Family Guests and the Family Head accrue Etihad Guest Tier Miles, credited to their own Etihad Guest membership accounts, and attain or maintain their own Etihad Guest Tier Status; in determining the Etihad Guest Tier Status of a Family Head, no account is taken of Etihad Guest Miles and/or flight activity attributable to Family Guests. [6]
  • Status is personal. Membership is not transferable, and selling, transferring or buying tier status or Tier Miles for cash or other consideration is listed as misuse that can lead to cancellation. [6]
  • Downgrade timing. The 18-month validity that follows a Platinum or Emerald downgrade runs from the downgrade date, not from the member's last earning activity. [6]
  • Retrospective credit. Etihad Guest Miles may be earned for Etihad Airways operated flights taken up to three months before enrolment. [6]

Frequently asked questions

How many tiers does Etihad Guest have?

Five: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald. [2] Members start at Bronze and move up by earning the required number of Tier Miles within 12 months. [5]

What is the difference between Etihad Guest Miles and Tier Miles?

Etihad Guest Miles can be spent on flights, upgrades and rewards, while Tier Miles are the currency used to reach higher tiers. [2] Tier Miles cannot be redeemed for rewards and have no cash value. [6]

Do Etihad Guest Tier Miles expire?

Yes. Tier Miles are valid for a 12-month period and Etihad does not extend that validity, with tier status recalculated each year on the preceding 12 months. [6]

Do Etihad Guest Miles expire while you hold status?

For most members the whole balance expires after 18 months without a Qualifying Activity, at 23:30 Gulf Standard Time on the last day of that 18th month. [6] Platinum and Emerald members' miles do not expire while that status is maintained. [6]

Does a family membership pool Tier Miles for status?

No.
