How to read hotel brand portfolios

Hotel brand portfolios are the way large hotel groups sort dozens of brands into tiers — luxury, lifestyle, full service, select service and extended stay — with the brands in a group generally earning into one shared loyalty programme. Marriott International lists over 30 hotel brands in four groups under Marriott Bonvoy [7] [6], and IHG Hotels & Resorts presents 21 hotel brands in collections under IHG One Rewards [4].

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Each group publishes its own tier names and descriptions, so a brand's position only makes sense inside its own group [7] [4].
  • Most brands in a group share one programme: Marriott Bonvoy for Marriott's participating brands, IHG One Rewards for IHG's [1] [4].
  • Being in the same group does not mean the same earning rate or the same benefits at every brand [1] [4].
  • Not every property is in the programme: Marriott lists Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations as non-participating [1].

What do luxury, full service, select service and extended stay mean?

These are group-defined labels rather than a shared industry standard. Marriott sorts its brands into four groups and describes luxury as hotels that bring destinations to life with bespoke programming and unparalleled service, full service as thoughtfully designed hotels with elevated dining, fitness and meeting experiences, select service as modern, consistent and recognizable hotels for every kind of stay, and longer stays as spacious studios, apartments and homes designed for longer stays [7].

IHG uses a different set of headings: a Luxury & Lifestyle Collection, a Premium Collection, an Essentials Collection, a Suites Collection and Exclusive Alliances [4].

The labels do not translate between groups. In IHG's own answers, the brands it calls luxury are InterContinental, Kimpton, Six Senses, Regent and Vignette Collection — a narrower list than the Luxury & Lifestyle Collection on the same page, which also places Hotel Indigo there [4]. IHG also names Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites as its dedicated extended-stay brands [4]. Read a brand's tier inside its own group rather than comparing "select service" with "essentials" as if they were ranked against each other [4] [6].

Which loyalty programme does each hotel brand use?

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty programme of Marriott International, and its rules define participating brands as the brands that take part in the programme and support earning, redemption and recognition [1]. That list covers luxury names such as The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and JW Marriott, full-service names such as Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Westin and Le Méridien, and select-service and longer-stay names such as Courtyard, Fairfield, Moxy, Aloft, AC Hotels, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element [1].

IHG's brands sit in IHG One Rewards, which IHG describes as rewarding loyalty across its portfolio [4]. Some brand names have history behind them: Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and the Starwood Preferred Guest programme operated as a unified programme before Marriott Bonvoy became the loyalty programme in February 2019, so those brand-level programme names describe earlier arrangements [1].

Do brands in the same group earn at the same rate?

At Marriott Bonvoy, no. Base earning depends on the brand, as the rules set 10 base points per U.S. dollar on qualifying charges for most brands but 5 at a named list of brands and 4 at StudioRes [1].

Series by Marriott in the United States, Canada and Greater China10 [1]

Two further brand-level differences appear in the same rules. At Marriott Executive Apartments, members earn points on qualifying rates only and not on other qualifying charges [1]. Elite bonus points are available at all participating brands except where the rules note otherwise [1]. On the IHG side, IHG One Rewards benefits are generally available at all IHG Hotels & Resorts and other partner hotels participating in the programme, with exceptions for specific brands set out in its terms [4].

Exceptions and limits

  • Brands outside the programme. Marriott lists Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations as a non-participating brand, and names individual properties such as The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore as non-participating [1].
  • Limited participation. Participation by Design Hotels and by Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy is limited and subject to the specific earning, redemption and benefit rules for those brands [1]. MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection take part in a unique capacity under their own terms of service [1].
  • Brand-specific gaps even inside a programme. Marriott's rules say specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available at certain properties or experiences even where those properties are not explicitly identified as excluded [1]. The portfolio list can be updated, added to or reduced over time [1].
  • IHG's stated exceptions. At Six Senses, IHG One Rewards points may be earned or redeemed for stays but other benefits may not be available, and some hotels do not participate [4]. Not all Iberostar Beachfront Resorts participate in IHG One Rewards, and that portfolio excludes any interests in Cuba [4].
  • A brand still integrating. Ruby hotels will be continuously integrated into IHG One Rewards starting in 2026, and IHG directs guests to check the individual hotel website for participation information [4].

This page maps published brand portfolios and programme affiliation as published in October 2026 for Marriott Bonvoy and IHG One Rewards [1] [4]. It does not rank properties and should not be read as promising the same benefits at every brand in a group [1].
