FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a hotel chain?

A hotel chain — also called a hotel group or hotel company — is a business that brings many hotels under shared brand names and, usually, one loyalty programme that a guest joins once and then uses across the group. The chain sets brand standards and programme rules, while an individual hotel may be owned or run by a different company. Marriott International's programme, Marriott Bonvoy, shows the layering in practice: it is described as the loyalty programme of Marriott International, Inc. and its subsidiaries, and it lists participating brands from The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis to Courtyard, Moxy and Residence Inn under one set of rules. Key takeaways

  • A chain is the corporate and brand layer above a single hotel; Marriott's rules refer to Marriott owned, leased, licensed and managed locations and distinguish them from Company franchisees and licensees. [2]
  • One programme can cover many brands: Bonvoy points are described as usable at more than 30 hotel brands and 10,000 destinations, with free nights starting at 12,000 points per night. [4]
  • Earning is not identical everywhere: Bonvoy pays 10 base Points at most participating brands, 5 at a named list of brands, and 4 at StudioRes. [2]
  • Not every hotel carrying a chain's brand participates in its programme, and Marriott's rules name brands and individual properties that do not. [2]

How are a hotel chain, a brand and an operator different?

A chain sits above the individual hotel: it owns the brand names and programme rules and decides which properties take part. A brand is the name and service standard attached to a group of hotels, a property is one physical hotel, and the operator is the business running that hotel day to day. Those roles can sit with different companies, and Marriott's programme rules reflect that by referring to "Marriott owned, leased, licensed, and managed locations" and by stating that its Managed Associate Rules do not apply to employees of Company franchisees, licensees and owners of Company-managed properties. [2]

Marriott defines "Participating Properties" and "Participating Brands" as the hotels, resorts, brands, collections and other eligible offerings that participate in the programme and, subject to property- or brand-specific limitations, support earning, redemption, recognition and benefit delivery, and the Company reserves the right to update, add, remove or otherwise modify that list at any time. [2]

Brand and operator can also come apart at the edges of the network. Marriott says certain transient-stay properties operate in agreement with the Company and are not under a Participating Brand but are still bookable through Marriott Channels, and that unless otherwise indicated they participate in the programme based on the Participating Brand they will convert to at a later date. [2]

Chain-level programmes can absorb brand-level ones. Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest operated as a unified programme before Marriott Bonvoy became the Loyalty Program in February 2019. [2]

How does a chain's loyalty programme work across its brands?

Marriott Bonvoy describes itself as the loyalty programme of Marriott International, Inc. and its subsidiaries, including Marriott Rewards, LLC and Preferred Guest, Inc. [2] A member holds one account, and accounts are individual: they may not be shared, jointly held, sold, bartered or transferred except as the rules expressly permit. [2]

Earning rates are set by the programme but vary by brand, so two hotels in the same chain do not necessarily pay the same number of points. The Bonvoy base rates on Qualifying Charges are: [2]

Elite bonus Points are paid on top at participating brands, with the amount depending on the member's Elite Status. [2]

Redemption is property-specific rather than fixed across the chain. Free Night Awards are redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide with varying point values, Cash + Points rates appear only at participating hotels, and Nightly Upgrade Awards are open to Gold Elite members and above. [4]

The programme layer also carries partners that belong to the chain rather than to any one hotel. Bonvoy points transfer to 38 airlines, at 3 points to 1 mile with most programmes; members receive 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred, except for American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles and Delta SkyMiles; Air New Zealand Koru transfers at 200:1 and earns a reduced bonus of 75 miles, and United MileagePlus earns 10,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points; transfers run from 3,000 to 240,000 points per day. [3] The programme also lists transfers of 10:8 to MGM Rewards, 3:1 to Rakuten and 10:1 to Starbucks. [4]

Are all hotels under a chain's brand in the loyalty programme?

Not necessarily. Marriott's rules set out brands, collections and individual properties that participate only in a limited way, or not at all. [2]

  • Limited participation. Design Hotels properties that participate do so in a limited way under specific earning, redemption and benefit rules; Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy has limited participation; MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy properties participate in a unique capacity under their own terms of service; and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is an earning and redemption partner with unique participation. [2]
  • Non-branded properties. Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas is a non-branded Participating Property where members may earn Points or Miles on room rate only and redeem at The Coral, The Royal and The Cove; The Reef, The Beach and Harborside at Atlantis do not participate, the breakfast option of the Elite Welcome Gift is not available, and no Points are earned or redeemed for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [2]
  • Residences. Branded Residences are by nature not transient-stay properties and do not participate unless listed; the participating ones are Marriott Residences Salgados Resort, Algarve; The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale; and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach. [2]
  • Excluded names. Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, City Express Rio de Janeiro Barra da Tijuca, Grand Residences by Marriott Mayfair-London, Marriott Conference Centers Rotary House Hotel in Houston, Marriott Vacation Club at The Empire Place in Bangkok, The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast, and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore are listed as not participating. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Exits. If a Participating Property or Participating Brand exits the programme, members no longer earn Points or Qualifying Nights at stays there, and awards, promotions and special offers stop being valid after the exit date, even where the reservation was made before it. [2]
  • Rules can change. The Company may change, limit or cancel the programme, its rules, the participating lists, partner participation, earning and redemption structures and award availability, with or without notice, even if changes affect the value of Points or the ability to obtain an award. [2]
  • Ownership of points. Points, Awards, Elite Status and other programme value are the sole property of the Company, not of the member, and have no cash value. [2]
  • Activity requirement. Members must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to keep Points, Awards and other benefits; gifting, transferring or receiving Points from another member does not count. [2]
  • Property-level carve-outs. At Marriott Executive Apartments only Qualifying Rates earn, and charges at food and beverage outlets managed or operated by a third party may not be eligible for earning. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Is a hotel chain the same thing as a hotel brand?

No. A chain is the company and programme layer, while brands are the names it applies to different groups of hotels: Marriott Bonvoy lists dozens of participating brands under one set of programme rules. [2]

Do all hotels in a chain pay the same number of points?

No. Bonvoy pays 10 base Points at most participating brands, 5 at a named list of brands and 4 at StudioRes. [2]

Why would a stay at a branded hotel earn nothing?

Because programme participation is decided per brand and per property, not by the sign on the door: Bulgari Hotels and Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore and several other named properties are listed as not participating. [2]

Can a chain change which brands are inside its programme?

Yes. The Company reserves the right to update, add, remove or otherwise modify the list of Participating Properties and Participating Brands at any time. [2]

Is the hotel operator always the chain itself?

No. Marriott's rules separate Marriott owned, leased, licensed and managed locations from Company franchisees, licensees and owners of Company-managed properties. [2]
