GUIDE
How to compare hotel points value across programmes
Hotel points value is the cash worth of one hotel point at the moment it is redeemed, and it is estimated by dividing the cash price of a room by the number of points the same room costs on the same dates. Marriott Bonvoy and Wyndham Rewards both state that their points have no cash value, so the result is a comparison for one stay rather than a fixed exchange rate. [5] [7] This guide sets out that method, the award prices the two programmes publish, and the conditions that move the number.
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Points have no fixed cash value: Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules say Points and Awards have no cash value, and Wyndham Rewards' terms say its points have no cash value and are not the member's property. [5] [7]
- Wyndham Rewards publishes a free-night range of 7,500 to 30,000 points per bedroom per night at participating properties, with requirements varying by property. [4] [6]
- Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules fix earning at 10 base Points per US dollar at most participating brands, 5 at a listed group of brands and 4 at StudioRes. [7]
- Both programmes reserve the right to change redemption levels without notice, including in ways that affect the value of points already earned. [1] [5] [7]
How do you work out what a hotel point is worth?
Take the number of points a programme charges for the nights you want, then price the same room for the same dates as a cash booking. Divide the cash price by the points the award costs, then subtract anything the award does not cover, because an award night is not always a zero-cost night. Wyndham Rewards says taxes and resort fees may apply even for free nights and that points cannot be used to pay them. [4]
Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules make the member responsible for taxes, duties and other obligations connected with earning, receiving, redeeming, transferring or converting Points, so a comparison built on the room rate alone leaves those amounts out of the cash side. [7] Running the same sum as cents per point is the basis of the cents per point measure used across this encyclopedia.
Repeat the calculation across several properties and dates rather than one night: Wyndham Rewards states that redemption requirements are per bedroom per night, vary by property and can be as high as 30,000 points per bedroom, and that a member must hold enough points for every bedroom in the accommodation booked. [4]
What figures do the two programmes publish?
Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules set out earning: 10 base Points per US dollar on qualifying charges at most participating brands, 5 at a listed group that includes Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Element, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites, and 4 at StudioRes. [7] Marriott also says it may increase or decrease the number of points required for a reward, withdraw or limit a reward, and add blackout dates, with or without notice. [1]
| Programme | Figure | Applies to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wyndham Rewards | 7,500–30,000 points per bedroom per night for a free night | Participating properties; requirements vary by property | [4] [6] |
| Wyndham Rewards | Discounted Nights with Points + Cash from 750 points plus cash, also displayed as starting at 500 points plus cash | Participating properties; the cash portion varies by property and date | [4] |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 10 base Points per US dollar; 5 at a listed group of brands; 4 at StudioRes | Qualifying charges on stays at participating properties | [7] |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Points required for a reward may be increased or decreased | All rewards | [1] |
Wyndham's programme page displays more than one entry price: free nights appear as "starting at just 5,000 points" in the member summary and as "starting at 7,500 points" in the how-to-redeem section, while discounted nights appear as starting at 500 points and at 750 points plus cash respectively. [4] The range used in the table is the one Wyndham gives for free nights at participating properties. [6] Wyndham's terms took effect on 30 September 2026, [5] and Marriott's Program Rules are dated October 2026. [7]
What moves the value of a hotel point?
- Property and date. Wyndham Rewards varies its redemption requirements by property and allows them to reach 30,000 points per bedroom per night, so the same points buy different amounts of room in different places. [4]
- Programme change rights. Marriott may change redemption levels, blackout dates and reward availability with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of points already accumulated. [1] [7] Wyndham may modify point values, redemption levels and conversion ratios at any time without notice. [5]
- Taxes and resort fees. Wyndham says taxes and resort fees may apply even for free nights and cannot be paid with points, which keeps them in the cash side of the sum. [4]
- Availability and restrictions. Wyndham's free nights at participating properties are subject to availability, blackout dates, blackout rates and other restrictions. [4] [6]
- Minimum length of stay. Wyndham's booking module can flag a minimum length of stay requirement, [6] and its Program Rules define a Qualified Stay by reference to the property's minimum length of stay requirements. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Expiry changes the return. Wyndham Rewards points expire four years after the date they are posted, posting dates vary by the type of activity, and all accrued points may be cancelled if a member has no account activity for about 18 consecutive months. [5] Marriott Bonvoy requires Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months, and points and awards are forfeited after 24 consecutive months without it; gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count. [7]
- Card and lifetime exceptions. Wyndham Rewards points earned by a Wyndham Rewards Earner Premier cardmember do not expire under that expiry section while the account is open and in good standing. [5] Points in Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration. [7]
- Cancelled awards. At Marriott, an award cancelled after the applicable points expiration date will have those points expire unless Qualifying Activity had already extended that date. [7]
- No vested rights. Marriott says that accumulating points does not give members vested rights in points, miles, rewards or benefits, and that members may not rely on any reward or reward level remaining available. [1]
- Scope of the range. The 7,500 to 30,000 point band is a Wyndham Rewards rule for its participating properties and does not describe Marriott Bonvoy or any other programme. [4] [6]
- No cash-out. Wyndham points cannot be sold, bartered or transferred except as its terms allow, [5] and Marriott Points may not be sold, bartered or transferred except as its Program Rules permit. [7]
Frequently asked questions
How much are 10,000 hotel points worth?
It depends on the programme and the night. Neither Marriott Bonvoy nor Wyndham Rewards gives its points a cash value, [5] [7] and Wyndham's free nights run from 7,500 to 30,000 points per bedroom per night, [4] [6] so the same 10,000 points covers a different share of the bill at different properties.
Why do the same points buy fewer nights at some properties?
Wyndham Rewards sets redemption requirements per bedroom per night and varies them by property, up to 30,000 points per bedroom, [4] and it may modify point values and redemption levels at any time without notice. [5]
Do taxes and resort fees change what points are worth?
Yes. Wyndham says taxes and resort fees may apply even for free nights and cannot be paid with points, [4] and Marriott makes members responsible for taxes connected with redeeming points. [7]
Can Marriott Bonvoy points and Wyndham Rewards points be compared directly?
Only one redemption at a time. Each programme sets its own earning ratios and redemption levels and may change them, [1] [5] [7] so the comparison uses the cash price of the same room and dates rather than a rate between the two currencies.
