How to use LATAM Pass upgrade awards
LATAM Pass is the frequent flyer programme of LATAM Airlines. Members earn LATAM Pass Miles when flying with LATAM and can redeem them for tickets to destinations around the world; Qualifying Points are a separate balance that cannot be redeemed and are used only to qualify for Elite categories. [3] [4] Miles are calculated using a destination multiplier set by route type and Elite category, applied to the dollars spent on the ticket after fees, taxes and additional services are removed. [3]

Key takeaways
- LATAM Pass Miles are earned when flying with LATAM and can be redeemed for tickets to destinations around the world. [3]
- Miles are calculated from the dollars spent on the ticket, less fees, taxes and additional services, using a multiplier set by route type and Elite category. [3]
- The multiplier runs from x3 to x9 on domestic and regional flights and from x5 to x11 on the rest of the international network, rising with Elite tier. [3]
- Qualifying Points cannot be redeemed and are used only for Elite qualification; Gold requires 12,000, Platinum 35,000, Black 100,000 and Black Signature 200,000. [4]
- Qualifying Points are collected from 1 January to 31 December; the new or renewed Elite category is valid from 1 April of the following year until 31 March of the year after. [4]
How do you earn LATAM Pass Miles on a LATAM flight?
LATAM Pass Miles are collected when a member flies with LATAM, and the balance can then be redeemed for tickets to destinations around the world. [3] LATAM calculates the credit from a destination multiplier — which depends on whether the flight is domestic, regional or part of the rest of the international network — combined with the member's Elite category, applied to the dollars spent on the ticket after fees, taxes and additional services are removed. [3]
LATAM's own worked example uses an intercontinental ticket costing $900, with $100 of taxes, fees and additional services taken out, leaving $800. [3] A Gold member's x6 multiplier on that amount produces 4,800 LATAM Pass Miles. [3] Because the multiplier is associated with the member's Elite category, the rate applied to the same ticket spend differs by tier. [3]
Tickets redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles do not accumulate miles after flying. [3] LATAM Pass Miles expire after a while; LATAM directs members to its mileage-validity rules for the term. [3]
What multiplier applies to each LATAM Pass tier?
LATAM publishes separate earning rates for domestic and regional flying and for the rest of its international network. [3]
| Tier | Domestic and regional flights | Rest of international flights |
|---|---|---|
| LATAM | x3 | x5 |
| Gold | x4 | x6 |
| Platinum | x7 | x9 |
| Black | x8 | x10 |
| Black Signature | x9 | x11 |
On domestic and regional flights, the published rates run from x3 for LATAM to x9 for Black Signature. [3] On the rest of the international network, they run from x5 to x11. [3]
How do Qualifying Points decide your Elite tier?
Qualifying Points are not the same currency as miles: they cannot be redeemed and are used exclusively to qualify for Elite categories. [4] The thresholds are as follows. [4]
| Elite category | Qualifying Points required |
|---|---|
| Gold | 12,000 |
| Platinum | 35,000 |
| Black | 100,000 |
| Black Signature | 200,000 |
On LATAM flights the rate depends on the fare family as well as the route. [4] Domestic flying earns 3 Qualifying Points per R$1 from the Light fare upwards, and 1 Qualifying Point per R$1 on the Basic fare. [4] International flying earns 6 Qualifying Points per US$1 from the Light fare upwards, and 1 Qualifying Point per US$1 on Basic. [4] Fees and taxes are excluded from these calculations. [4]
Qualifying Points are collected between 1 January and 31 December, and that score sets the Elite category for the next requalification cycle, which occurs on 31 March of the following year. [4] The new or renewed Elite category is attributed on 1 April of the following year and is valid from 1 April of that year until 31 March of the year after. [4] Where a member moves up a category, the same rule applies, but the benefits of the new category are available immediately after the target is reached. [4]
Exceptions and limits
- Fare family changes the maths. On LATAM flights, the Basic fare earns 1 Qualifying Point per R$1 domestically and per US$1 internationally, compared with 3 and 6 respectively from the Light fare upwards. [4]
- Taxes and extras do not count. The mile calculation removes fees, taxes and additional services before the multiplier is applied; Qualifying Points exclude fees and taxes as well. [3] [4]
- Partner flying is different. On flights with partner airlines, the Qualifying Points earned vary according to the airline, the fare and the distance flown. [4]
- Award tickets do not earn miles. A flight taken on a ticket redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles adds nothing to the mileage balance. [3]
- Miles expire. LATAM Pass Miles expire after a while; LATAM directs members to its mileage-validity rules for the term. [3]
- Status and miles are separate balances. Qualifying Points cannot be redeemed and are used only for Elite qualification, while LATAM Pass Miles are redeemed for tickets. [3] [4]
Frequently asked questions
Do LATAM Pass award tickets earn miles?
No. Tickets redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles do not accumulate miles after flying. [3]
Does Elite status change how many miles a ticket earns?
Yes. The destination multiplier is combined with the Elite category, so a Gold member earns x4 on domestic and regional flights and x6 on other international flights, against x3 and x5 shown for LATAM. [3]
Are taxes and fees included when earning miles?
No. Fees, taxes and additional services are subtracted from the ticket spend before the multiplier is applied, and Qualifying Points are also calculated without fees and taxes. [3] [4]
Can Qualifying Points be redeemed for tickets?
No. Qualifying Points cannot be redeemed and are used exclusively for qualification to Elite categories. [4]
When does a newly reached Elite category start?
Qualifying Points are collected from 1 January to 31 December, and the requalification cycle occurs on 31 March of the following year. The new or renewed category is attributed on 1 April of that year and is valid from that date to 31 March of the year after. [4] If a member moves up a category, the new benefits are available immediately after the target is reached. [4]
