LATAM Pass vs Avianca LifeMiles: Rules Compared
LATAM Pass is the frequent flyer programme of LATAM Airlines, in which members earn miles on flights and on purchases and redeem them for tickets, products and cabin upgrades. [1] Miles on LATAM flights are worked out from the amount paid for the ticket, multiplied by a factor that depends on the destination type and the member's Elite tier [3], while progress towards Elite status is counted in Qualifying Points that cannot be redeemed [4]. This page sets out those published fields for LATAM Pass; the Avianca LifeMiles programme is covered on its own page.

Key takeaways
- LATAM Pass Miles earned on LATAM flights are calculated on the dollars paid, after fees, taxes and additional services are removed, multiplied by a factor of ×3 to ×11 depending on destination type and Elite tier. [3]
- Elite status is measured in Qualifying Points: 12,000 for Gold, 35,000 for Platinum, 100,000 for Black and 200,000 for Black Signature. [4]
- The qualifying year runs from 1 January to 31 December, and the category it earns is valid from 1 April of the following year to 31 March of the year after. [4]
- Miles have a validity period and expire, while Qualifying Points cannot be redeemed at all. [3] [4]
How are LATAM Pass Miles calculated?
LATAM Pass says members accumulate miles when they fly with LATAM. The amount is calculated with a destination multiplier — one set of rates for domestic and regional flights and another for the rest of the international network — combined with the member's Elite category, plus the number of dollars spent on the ticket less fees, taxes and additional services. [3]
| Tier | Domestic and regional flights | Other international flights |
|---|---|---|
| LATAM (no Elite tier) | ×3 | ×5 |
| Gold | ×4 | ×6 |
| Platinum | ×7 | ×9 |
| Black | ×8 | ×10 |
| Black Signature | ×9 | ×11 |
LATAM's own worked example: an intercontinental ticket costing $900, with $100 of taxes, fees and additional services removed, leaves $800, which a Gold member multiplies by six to reach 4,800 LATAM Pass Miles. [3]
Two conditions sit around that calculation. Tickets redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles do not accumulate miles after flying [3], and a member whose miles were not added automatically can request them [3].
How do Qualifying Points and Elite categories work?
LATAM Pass keeps redeemable miles separate from the currency used for status. Qualifying Points exist to reach Elite categories and cannot be redeemed; LATAM Pass Miles are the redeemable kind. [4] On the Brazilian programme pages the earning rates are quoted per unit of currency spent, excluding fees and taxes. [4]
| Flights | Fare | Qualifying Points |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic | From Light fare | 3 per R$1 |
| Domestic | Basic fare | 1 per R$1 |
| International | From Light fare | 6 per US$1 |
| International | Basic fare | 1 per US$1 |
| Elite category | Qualifying Points |
|---|---|
| Gold | 12,000 |
| Platinum | 35,000 |
| Black | 100,000 |
| Black Signature | 200,000 |
Flights with partner airlines follow a different logic: how many Qualifying Points they earn varies with the airline, the fare and the distance flown rather than the per-currency rates above. [4] Extra Qualifying Points can also be selected as a benefit on a member's next LATAM flight through Bonus LATAM Pass, from 6,000 Qualifying Points. [4]
When do miles and Elite status expire?
Miles and status run on separate clocks. LATAM Pass states that miles expire after a period and sets the detail out on a separate validity page [3], whereas an Elite category is tied to the qualifying year in which it was earned [4].
Qualifying Points can be accumulated between 1 January and 31 December, and that total defines the Elite category for the next requalification cycle, which always takes place on 31 March of the following year. [4] The category reached is valid from 1 April of the following year until 31 March of the year after that, and Elite categories are renewed on 1 April. [4]
Exceptions and limits
- Award tickets earn nothing. Tickets redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles do not accumulate miles after flying. [3] See how to book LATAM Pass awards.
- Fees and taxes come out first. The mile formula applies to dollars spent after fees, taxes and additional services are removed [3], and the Brazilian Qualifying Point rates are likewise quoted excluding fees and taxes [4].
- Currency depends on the route. On the Brazilian pages, domestic qualifying spend is quoted in reais and international spend in US dollars. [4]
- Partner flights do not fit one scale. Qualifying Point earning on partner airlines varies with airline, fare and distance. [4]
- Mid-year upgrades are the exception to the calendar. A category reached during the qualifying year becomes valid on 1 April of the following year; for an upgrade the rule stays the same but the benefits of the new category are available immediately after its target is reached. [4]
Frequently asked questions
How many LATAM Pass Miles do you earn?
It depends on the destination type and the traveller's Elite tier: the published multipliers run from ×3 on domestic and regional flights with no Elite tier to ×11 on other international flights for Black Signature members, applied to the dollars left after fees, taxes and additional services. [3]
Do LATAM Pass award tickets earn miles?
No. LATAM Pass states that tickets redeemed with LATAM Pass Miles do not accumulate miles after flying. [3]
How many Qualifying Points are needed for LATAM Pass Gold?
12,000 Qualifying Points, against 35,000 for Platinum, 100,000 for Black and 200,000 for Black Signature. [4]

A category earned in the qualifying year that ends on 31 December is valid from 1 April of the following year to 31 March of the year after that. [4]
