COURSE

Start here: WestJet Rewards — join, earn, redeem, keep your points and reach status

WestJet Rewards is a reward program offered by WestJet, an Alberta Partnership, to WestJet guests who become members [1]. Members earn WestJet points on eligible WestJet flights, eligible vacation packages and purchases with Participating Partners, and redeem them for travel, merchandise, gift cards and other items [1]. This six-step course takes a new member from enrolment through earning and redeeming points and keeping the account active, to the tier qualifying spend behind Silver, Gold and Platinum [1] [2].

Step 1: What WestJet Rewards is and who it suits

You will learn: what kind of programme WestJet Rewards is and which travellers it is built for.

WestJet Rewards is a reward program offered by WestJet, an Alberta Partnership, to WestJet guests who are members of it [1]. The terms and conditions replace any other terms WestJet may have provided and govern a member's participation, and by participating a member, or a parent or legal guardian on the member's behalf, accepts them including as they may be amended from time to time [1]. For members outside Quebec, WestJet may restrict, suspend, amend, extend or otherwise alter WestJet Rewards or certain aspects of it with or without notice; for members in Quebec, amendments are posted on westjet.com and sent in writing between the 90th and 60th day before they take effect for essential elements, and at least 30 days before for non-essential elements. In both cases WestJet may terminate the programme on 30 days' notice, after which any issued WestJet points, vouchers or other benefits expire [1].

WestJet points are not property: accumulating them gives no vested rights, they have no monetary value, they cannot form the basis of a monetary claim against WestJet or any Participating Partner, and they will not be exchanged for cash [1]. The terms are governed by the provincial laws of Alberta and the federal laws applicable there, with disputes submitted to the courts of Alberta, except for residents of Quebec, whose terms are governed by Quebec law with disputes submitted to the courts of Quebec [1].

The programme suits people who buy WestJet Eligible Fares on WestJet-marketed flights, or book WestJet Vacations or Sunwing Vacations Eligible Packages, and want to earn WestJet points from that spend and then spend them [1].

Step 2: How to join

You will learn: how to open a WestJet Rewards account correctly the first time.

Enrolment is free and limited to natural persons: no corporation, trust, partnership, household, animal or other entity may hold membership [1]. A person can only enrol once, individually, using their full legal name exactly as it appears on their passport or, without a passport, on a government-issued identification, and proper legal documentation is required for any name change on the account [1]. Applications are completed at westjet.com, where the member uses a valid email address and is responsible for creating their own online credentials to access the account [1]. A WestJet Rewards member number is emailed after the account is created, and it is the member's responsibility to record and retain it; WestJet does not issue member cards [1].

Minors, being children under the age of majority in their province, territory or jurisdiction of residence, can only be enrolled by a parent or legal guardian, and minor children may register using their parent's email address; a minor must be enrolled using a unique valid email address that the parent or guardian owns and maintains and that is not associated with another account [1].

Step 3: How earning works

You will learn: which WestJet purchases earn WestJet points and what you must do at booking.

Members earn WestJet points on eligible spend on WestJet Eligible Fares and WestJet-Eligible Ancillaries on WestJet-marketed flights, at a rate based on their tier status at the time of the activity or travel [1]. Select Partner Eligible Fares on Partner-Marketed Flights earn at published rates based on mileage flown and class of service purchased, and a member of more than one frequent flyer programme may earn reward credit under only one programme for each flight activity [1]. WestJet Vacations Eligible Packages, Sunwing Vacations Eligible Packages and WestJet Vacations Land-Only Bookings award points at published rates to each member listed on the booking, based on their proportionate share of the total eligible spend, which excludes taxes, fees and other charges, and group vacation package bookings are not eligible [1].

Points earned on a WestJet Credit Card account are awarded to the primary cardholder's account and are earned on net purchases only, not on cash advances, interest charges or fees [1]. Participating Partners award points at set rates on the total amount of the completed transaction excluding taxes and fees, purchases made before a person's enrolment are not eligible unless WestJet Rewards permits otherwise, and loyalty currency converted from a third-party Conversion Program must come from an account bearing the same name as the member's WestJet Rewards account [1]. The WestJet Rewards ID number must be given at the time of booking or purchase; WestJet will consider retroactive requests for up to 12 months from the date of travel or purchase, provided the member was enrolled at the time the activity was completed; for Sunwing Vacations Eligible Packages, retroactive requests are only considered where travel was completed on or after September 9, 2026 [1]. Points post within 7 days of completed travel, with up to 30 days allowed on some occasions, and no points are awarded on refunded, void or unused tickets or where the member is a no-show [1].

Step 4: How to use WestJet points

You will learn: what WestJet points can be spent on and which award bookings can be changed or cancelled.

WestJet points can be redeemed for a variety of travel, merchandise, gift cards and other items offered by WestJet and/or Participating Partners, subject to the terms and to any additional terms for a specific redemption [1]. On WestJet Eligible Fares or UltraBasic fares there are no blackout periods or inventory management restrictions and no open-jaw, multi-city or stop-over restrictions, while blackout periods and inventory management restrictions do apply on Member Exclusive Fares [1]. Minimum redemption rules apply to certain bookings and vary by booking type and booking channel, and the number of points needed for flight taxes, fees and charges or for post-booking items such as seat selection, checked bags and cabin upgrade fees may vary and is rounded up to the next increment of 100 points [1].

Changes or cancellations to bookings paid with points on an UltraBasic fare are not permitted, and UltraBasic fares are non-refundable with no changes allowed and no credits issued [1]. Cancellations on a WestJet Eligible Fare or a Member Exclusive Fare are permitted under WestJet's standard cancel policy and standard cancellation fees, the redeemed points are reinstated to the account and keep their original expiration date, and a partial refund on a currency other than CAD may not match the original redemption amount because of exchange rate fluctuations [1]. No tier qualifying spend or milestone qualifying spend is earned on any part of a purchase made with the redemption of WestJet points [1].

Step 5: Keeping your points and reaching Silver, Gold or Platinum

You will learn: how to keep an account active and what counts towards Silver, Gold or Platinum.

WestJet points have no expiry date and remain in the account if the account remains active, and an account remains active if the member accrues, redeems, transfers or converts WestJet points within the preceding 24-month period; otherwise the account becomes inactive [1]. WestJet may deactivate an inactive account and reassign the associated WestJet Rewards ID number, and if an account is deactivated all WestJet points and vouchers associated with it expire, with notice between 30 and 60 days where required by law [1]. Promotional or bonus points may carry a specific expiry under the terms of the campaign that issued them. Except in cases of fraudulent activity, reactivation may be offered within 12 months of deactivation, including by paying a fee. Terminating an account forfeits any points in it immediately [1].

Silver, Gold and Platinum status is available to all members based on achieving the published tier qualifying spend requirement for each level during the Qualifying Year, which runs from January 1 to December 31; a first Qualifying Year begins on the enrolment date and ends on December 31 of the same year [1]. Tier qualifying spend is composed of WestJet Eligible Fares on WestJet-Marketed Flights prorated among all flown segments on the ticket according to IATA prorate standards, WestJet-Eligible Ancillaries, WestJet Vacations Eligible Packages and, effective September 9, 2026, Sunwing Vacations Eligible Packages where travel is completed on or after that date, plus any amounts earned from Status Lift in a Qualifying Year [1]. Only the member who is the individual traveller and whose name and WestJet Rewards ID number appear on the ticket accrues tier qualifying spend, and none is earned on the portion of a booking paid with WestJet points [1].

  • Silver: $4,000 [2]
  • Gold: $6,000 [2]
  • Platinum: $10,000 [2]

Those thresholds took effect on January 1, 2025, and the overview page states that the ability to retain status and benefits in future years is based on tier qualifying spend for the 2025 qualifying year and each year following [2]. When a member crosses the spend threshold of a higher tier, or starts a new Qualifying Year in which a top tier has been retained, new flight benefit vouchers applicable to the new tier are issued and any previously unused vouchers issued from achieving a previous top tier are cancelled; no vouchers are issued when crossing thresholds for a tier lower than the current one, and WestJet Rewards reserves the right to change, restrict, suspend or withdraw any top-tier benefit at any time without notice [1].

Step 6: Your first concrete action

You will learn: the single sequence to complete now so that nothing is lost later.

  1. Enrol once at westjet.com in your full legal name as it appears on your passport or government ID, and keep the member number that arrives by email, because WestJet will not issue a member card [1].
  2. Add your WestJet Rewards ID number to every booking with WestJet or a Participating Partner, and if you forget, ask for retroactive credit within 12 months of the travel or purchase date [1].
  3. Check that points and tier qualifying spend post within 7 days of completed travel, allowing up to 30 days on some occasions [1].
  4. Accrue, redeem, transfer or convert WestJet points at least once every 24 months so the account stays active [1].
  5. Before redeeming on an UltraBasic fare, remember that those bookings cannot be changed or cancelled, and read the full terms at westjet.com [1].

Next: work through the WestJet Rewards programme hub for the task you are doing next, and check the official terms before any booking that uses points.
