COMPARISON

Aeroplan vs WestJet Rewards

WestJet Rewards is WestJet's own loyalty programme, and WestJet — not its co-brand card issuer Royal Bank of Canada — is responsible for its terms, including how points are earned, redeemed and administered [2].

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • WestJet publishes a flat earn rate on WestJet flights at two of its tiers: 1 WestJet point per $1 at Teal [4] and 3 points per $1 at Silver [5]. Platinum is described as earning the most points across all products, but no Platinum multiple is published on the page checked [6].
  • Status is spend-based. Silver requires $4,000, Gold $6,000 and Platinum $10,000 of tier qualifying spend under the levels effective 1 January 2025 [2], and benefits earned run for the rest of the current year plus the entire following year [5] [6].

Earning points

At the entry Teal tier, WestJet publishes 1 WestJet point per $1 spent on WestJet flights, seat selection, baggage and upgrades, and 1 point per $1 on WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations packages [4]. The same page lists earning on car rentals, meal plans, attractions and transfers, on flights with partner airlines, and on everyday purchases with WestJet Rewards partners [4].

Silver members earn 3 points per $1 spent on WestJet flights [5]. The Platinum page says Platinum members earn the most points across all of WestJet's products, but does not state a multiple [6].

The co-brand cards add points on top of flight activity. The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard earns 2 WestJet points per $1 on eligible WestJet flights and WestJet Vacations packages and 1.5 points per $1 on all other purchases [2]; the WestJet RBC Mastercard earns 1.5 and 1 point per $1 on the same split [2]. The extra 0.5 point on travel is awarded only when WestJet or WestJet Vacations appears as the merchant, so bookings made through an agency or a third-party site may not qualify, and points are earned on net purchases only, not on cash advances, interest charges or fees [2].

World Elite cardholders also get a status head start called Status Lift: from 30 April 2025, eligible primary cardholders earn the equivalent of CAD 200 in tier qualifying spend for every $5,000 of eligible purchases, up to 50 times per qualifying year, which equals CAD 10,000 of tier qualifying spend [2].

Status: what it takes, what it gives

WestJet Rewards qualifies members on tier qualifying spend rather than distance. Effective 1 January 2025 the thresholds are $4,000 for Silver, $6,000 for Gold and $10,000 for Platinum, replacing the 2018–2024 levels of $3,000, $5,000 and $8,000 [2]. Members who reached a tier during the 2024 qualifying year keep the benefits of the previous spend levels for the whole of 2025 [2]. On the tier pages themselves, Silver benefits become available for the remainder of the current year and the entire year after reaching $4,000 [5], and Platinum benefits follow the same pattern at $10,000 [6].

Silver brings two free checked bags, with up to eight guests on the same reservation also receiving up to two free checked bags within the baggage allowance [5]; four advance seat-selection vouchers usable before check-in [5]; priority check-in for the member and guests on the same reservation [5]; complimentary gate upgrades when Extended Comfort or Premium seats remain [5]; and, from February 2024, six lounge vouchers for the member or accompanying guests on the day of a WestJet departure [2].

Platinum adds unlimited lounge access, three free checked bags, unlimited complimentary advance seat selection, priority baggage, priority security at participating airports, same-day itinerary changes, 24/7 priority support and waived phone booking fees [6]. Boarding zones changed on 15 January 2025: Zone 1 is reserved for Platinum members and guests in the Premium and Business cabins, and Zone 2 for Gold and Silver members alongside Extended Comfort guests [2]. From the same date, complimentary upgrade eligibility was widened to a Platinum, Gold or Silver member plus one other guest on the same booking, for single or two-guest reservations only [2].

Redemption, partners and cards

WestJet points can be redeemed for flights, cabin upgrades, merchandise, gift cards and other items [2] [4].

The World Elite companion voucher is the main card benefit: an annual round-trip voucher is issued once at least $5,000 in net purchases is posted in the 12 months after the previous voucher, and it can be used for a round trip at $119 for UltraBasic, Econo and EconoFlex fares in Canada or the continental United States, $219 for Premium and PremiumFlex, or $399 and $499 respectively for the rest of the network, with taxes, fees and air transportation charges paid separately [2]. It cannot be used for Business, BusinessFlex or Member Exclusive fares, applied to an existing reservation, or used for group, WestJet Vacations, WestJet Vacations Quebec or Sunwing Vacations bookings [2]. Companion vouchers issued as milestone awards now carry a two-year expiry [2].

Silver members receive complimentary preferred seating, two checked bags and priority services, and Platinum members receive three checked bags plus Delta Sky Club access, with WestJet points earned on Delta bookings based on distance flown and class of service [5] [6].

Milestone awards open at $2,000 of milestone qualifying spend, then at $8,000, $12,000, $16,000 and $20,000, and every additional $10,000 up to $50,000 [5] [6].

Exceptions and limits

  • These rules are WestJet Rewards rules only.
  • Thresholds move. The $4,000, $6,000 and $10,000 levels took effect on 1 January 2025, so comparisons built on the 2018–2024 levels of $3,000, $5,000 and $8,000 describe a superseded structure [2].
  • Benefits can be extended past a year-end. WestJet extended tier benefits to 31 January 2026 for members whose benefits were valid to 31 December 2025, who expected to drop a tier on 1 January 2026 and who held a round trip departing in December 2025 and returning in January 2026 on one reservation; members who had already met the spend to retain their tier were unaffected [2].
  • Complimentary upgrades depend on aircraft type, route, seat availability and the purchase of an eligible fare, and Silver members must check in with their WestJet Rewards ID at least 75 minutes before departure [5].
  • Seat vouchers carry cabin limits: Silver vouchers cover Standard or Preferred Economy seats but not Exit Row, Extended Comfort, Premium or Business seats, and must be used before check-in [5]; Platinum's unlimited selection includes Exit Row and Extended Comfort in the Economy cabin but not Premium or Business [6].
  • Platinum same-day changes are unavailable on UltraBasic fares, must stay on the same origin, destination and cabin, and depend on seat availability [6].
  • Lounge vouchers obtained by exchanging a World Elite companion voucher work only at WestJet partner lounges, up to three hours before departure, on WestJet-marketed flights with a WS flight number, and not on partner-marketed itineraries [2].
