FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are WestJet dollars?

WestJet dollars are the reward currency of WestJet Rewards, the loyalty programme of WestJet, and appear as WestJet points on WestJet's redemption pages. [1] Members collect them on WestJet flights, WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations packages and everyday partner spending, and spend them against the cash price of a booking at a published rate: as of 18 October 2026, 100 WestJet points are worth 1 CAD of savings on base fare, surcharges, checked bags and seats at the time of booking. [1] [4]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • WestJet dollars are spent at a set rate against the cash price of a booking, not at a per-seat award price: 100 points equal 1 CAD of savings on base fare, surcharges, bags and seats, while taxes, fees and post-booking extras price at 105–115 points per 1 CAD. [1]
  • The smallest redemption shown is 2,500 points for 25 CAD off a booking. [1]
  • Earning on WestJet flights depends on tier: Teal members earn 1 point per 1 CAD, Silver members 3 points per 1 CAD, and Platinum members earn the highest rate across WestJet's products. [4] [5] [6]
  • Points can be moved to another WestJet Rewards account holder for a 50–59 CAD fee per transfer, and a booking paid with points must be made by the member directly with WestJet or Sunwing. [1]

How do you earn WestJet dollars?

WestJet Rewards earning rates on WestJet's own flights rise with tier. Teal members earn 1 WestJet point per 1 CAD spent on WestJet flights, seat selection, baggage and upgrades, and 1 point per 1 CAD on WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations packages. [4] Silver members earn 3 points per 1 CAD spent on WestJet flights. [5] Platinum members earn the most points across all of WestJet's products. [6]

Silver benefits become available once a member reaches 4,000 CAD in tier qualifying spend, for the rest of the current year and the entire year after [5]; the Platinum threshold is 10,000 CAD on the same basis. [6] Outside flights, Teal members also earn on car rentals, meal plans, attractions and transfers, on flights with WestJet's partner airlines, and on everyday purchases with WestJet Rewards partners. [4] Silver and Platinum members earn WestJet points on every Delta Air Lines booking, based on distance flown and class of service. [5] [6] Balances and activity sit in the WestJet Rewards account.

How much are WestJet dollars worth when you redeem them?

WestJet publishes two rates. For the main part of a ticket, 100 WestJet points are worth 1 CAD of savings on base fare, surcharges (other air transportation charges), checked bags and seat selection, and redemptions start at 2,500 points for 25 CAD off. [1] Taxes and fees are priced higher: once a member has covered everything else on the ticket with points, they can redeem either 50% or 100% of the taxes and fees, the second option producing a fully points-paid flight, at 105–115 points per 1 CAD. [1] Extras bought after booking, through Manage Trips or digital check-in, also price at 105–115 points per 1 CAD. [1]

[1] Member Exclusive fares sit at the centre of the programme — WestJet describes them as carrying its biggest discounts and requires them to be paid entirely with WestJet points, excluding taxes. Can you transfer WestJet dollars to someone else?

WestJet Rewards lets a member move any amount of points to another WestJet Rewards account holder for a fee of 50–59 CAD per transfer, paid by credit card at the time; the request is made by phone. [1] A transfer is not needed to pay for someone else's trip: a member can sign in with their WestJet Rewards ID at the payment screen and apply points to another person's booking, provided the booking is made by the member directly with WestJet or Sunwing. [1]

What restrictions apply to WestJet dollars?

  • UltraBasic fares. UltraBasic fares are 100% non-refundable with no change options, and any points used on one are forfeited. [1]
  • Changes after booking. Points may be used on a new reservation only; any amount owing after the original booking date, including fare or fees, must be paid with another form of payment such as a credit card. [1]
  • Member Exclusive fares. A change requires cancelling the original booking and making a new one. [1]
  • Cancellations. A points booking must be altered by phone, the fare must allow changes, and a cancellation or change fee may apply; points redeemed on the reservation return to the account when a flight is cancelled. [1] For WestJet Vacations, Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations Quebec packages, points may be returned if the change or cancellation results in a refund to the original form of payment. [1]
  • Land-only bookings. Hotel rooms can be booked in any WestJet Vacations destination except Cuba and Bahia Principe properties. [1]
