How to redeem United MileagePlus awards

MileagePlus award redemption is governed by the MileagePlus Rules, under which United establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, all subject to modification, cancellation or limitation at United's discretion, with or without notice. [3] This page covers the award-redemption provisions of the MileagePlus Rules.

Key takeaways

  • MileagePlus award redemptions are subject to the MileagePlus Rules. [3]
  • United establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, and may modify, cancel or limit them with or without notice. [3]
  • The mileage price of an award can move in either direction, an award can be withdrawn, and restrictions can be imposed at any time. [3]
  • Routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners. [3]

Which MileagePlus rules apply?

The MileagePlus Rules govern the accrual and redemption of miles, awards and benefits, and a member accepts them by enrolling in or participating in the programme. [3] The version published on united.com is the final authority and supersedes any earlier or conflicting version. [3]

Within those Rules, United sets the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, and all of these are subject to modification, cancellation or limitation at United's discretion, with or without notice. [3] United may also withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award, increase the mileage, cash, co-pays or number of certificates required, add blackout dates, or limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations. [3]

Members cannot rely on an award, or an award level, staying available, and United notes that members may not be able to obtain all offered awards or use awards to all destinations or on all flights. [3] United has the sole right to interpret and apply the Rules, and its calculations — including the value of benefits and the accumulation of mileage — are final. [3]

Which routing and carrier conditions apply?

For award travel on airline partners, routing and destinations are determined by the individual travel partners. [3]

Awards for travel are valid only to destinations that are served both when the award ticket is issued and when the member departs, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that result in service to a destination being cancelled. [3] Partners are independent entities: United states that it is not responsible for the nature or quality of partners' products or services, and partner offers are governed by that partner's own terms and conditions. [3] An award ticket may also be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [3]

What does an award cost beyond miles?

Award tickets can attract departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees, and the person using the award ticket is responsible for paying them. [3] Once an award ticket has been issued, United may impose a service charge for each change or cancellation the member requests. [3] If a redeemed award is later cancelled or returned under the applicable rules, the miles taken for it are redeposited subject to a service charge, although some awards are not eligible for redeposit and will state so. [3]

Awards may be issued in the member's own name or in the name and for the use of another person, but only for non-commercial purposes and only after the member validates the account with a password or other security measures United has in place at the time of the request. [3]

What happens if flights change or award rules are not met?

An award ticket may be subject to the contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled, as well as to United's Rules. [3] If a member fails to comply with any published award rules for air travel, United may, at its sole discretion, accommodate the member on a different flight than originally selected, seat them in a lower class of service, deny ticketing or boarding, or take other action — and the member is not entitled to compensation in connection with it. [3]

Award travel does not earn award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [3] Separately, under the terms for the 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge (applications between January 8 and December 21, 2026), Premier qualifying points and Premier qualifying flights earned from United- or United Express-operated MileagePlus award tickets, or where the member has selected Money + Miles as the payment option, are eligible towards that offer's requirements. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • No sale, no transfer. Awards and benefits are not the member's property and are not transferable except as the Rules set out; selling, bartering or otherwise transferring miles, awards or benefits is prohibited, and remedies include cancelling pending or outstanding award redemptions, confiscating award tickets, denying boarding, or completing travel only on payment of a revenue fare. [3]
  • Partner withdrawals. United accepts no liability for a partner leaving the programme or for cancellations of awards caused by that, and partner offers remain governed by the partner's terms. [3]
  • Local law. The programme, including the issuance and use of awards, may be prohibited or restricted by the laws of some non-U.S. countries, and the Rules are not to be read as overriding those laws. [3]
  • Redeposit carve-outs. Not every award can have its miles returned after cancellation; awards that cannot will say so. [3]
  • No vested rights. Accumulating miles or holding status does not give a member vested rights to any award or benefit. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Can United change the Rules after I book an award ticket?

United may change the Rules, benefits and conditions of participation at any time with or without notice, even where changes may affect the value of Premier (and/or Million Miler) status levels, benefits, mileage or certificates already accumulated. [3] For a ticket already issued, the operating carrier's ticket terms and re-accommodation policies may also apply. [3]

Do the destinations have to be served both when the award is issued and when I depart?

Yes. Awards for travel are valid only to destinations served both at the time the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure. [3]

What fees sit on top of the miles?

Award tickets may carry departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, payable by the person using the ticket, and a service charge may apply to each change or cancellation requested after ticketing. [3]

Who decides the routing when a partner airline operates a leg?

For award travel on airline partners, routing and destinations are determined by the individual travel partners. [3]

Does an award itinerary earn miles or Premier credit?

Under the MileagePlus Rules, award travel does not earn award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [3] Separately, the 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge terms make Premier qualifying points and Premier qualifying flights earned from United- or United Express-operated MileagePlus award tickets, or where Money + Miles is selected, eligible towards that offer's requirements.
