How to Book United MileagePlus Awards
Booking a United MileagePlus award means redeeming miles for a ticket issued by United under the MileagePlus rules, which place the amount, structure, availability and process of award redemption in United's hands and allow United to change them with or without notice. [4] The same rules set who may be named on the ticket, which taxes and fees the traveller pays, and what happens when an award is later changed or cancelled. [4]

Key takeaways
- United sets the miles each award costs, how many seats are offered and how the redemption process works, and may modify, withdraw or restrict any of it at any time. [4]
- An award can be issued in the member's own name or in another person's name, but only for non-commercial purposes, and only once the account has been validated. [4]
- Taxes, inspection fees and passenger facility charges on an award ticket fall on the person who uses it, and a service charge may apply to each change or cancellation after ticketing. [4] [6]
- Routing on partner airlines is decided by the partner, and an award is valid only to destinations served both when the ticket is issued and when travel begins. [4]
Before you search: account checks and who flies
Two conditions sit in front of any award issue. United issues awards only after the member validates the account through a password or the other security measures in place at the time of the request. [4] The award may be issued in the member's name, or in the name and for the use of any other person, provided the use is non-commercial. [4]
A MileagePlus account is not necessarily open for redemption from day one. United says redemption activity, and the processing of redemption requests, may be prohibited in any MileagePlus account or suspended for a period after the account is opened. [4] If United suspects prohibited conduct it may suspend all activity in the account, redemption included, and any outstanding award redemptions are then subject to cancellation or suspension. [4]
What the award costs, and who decides
United establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, including the mileage needed for each award, and all of it is subject to modification, cancellation or limitation at United's discretion with or without notice. [4] The rules state directly that the mileage required may be substantially increased or decreased, that any award may be withdrawn, and that restrictions on an award or its redemption may be imposed at any time. [4] Members may not rely on the continued availability of an award or an award level, and may not be able to obtain every offered award or use awards to all destinations or on all flights. [4] United may also refuse award redemption for any member at its discretion or where the law requires. [4]
Because price and availability are both discretionary, treat a quoted award as a snapshot rather than a fixed tariff; the general behaviour of award inventory is set out under award availability, and the cheaper-inventory concept under saver award.
Taxes, fees and what the ticket carries
MileagePlus award tickets may be subject to taxes, fees, tariffs, and to the contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier operating the flight. [4] Departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges may apply, and the person using the award ticket is responsible for paying them. [4] United's Premier earning page repeats that taxes and fees related to award travel are the member's responsibility. [6]
After an award ticket is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests. [4] If a redeemed award is later cancelled or returned under the applicable rules, the miles taken are redeposited to the member's account subject to a service charge, and some awards state that they are not eligible for miles to be redeposited at all. [4] The range of possible service charges is described under award redemption fee.
Earning is split in two. United's programme rules say award miles and Premier qualifying credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets bought with a combination of miles and money. [4] The Premier earning page separately provides that members earn 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed on United and United Express flights and seat upgrades, credited to the member who travels rather than the member who redeemed, and usable toward Premier status or additional PlusPoints. [6] On an itinerary that mixes United and non-United operated flights, PQP is earned only on the United flights. [6] MileagePlus Upgrade Awards earn 1 PQP for every 100 miles redeemed and also earn PQP on the cash portion of the co-pay. [6]
Partner flights and routing
Routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners rather than by United. [4] United is not responsible for the nature or quality of partner products and services, and accepts no liability for a partner withdrawing from the programme or for cancellations that follow, including cancellation of awards. [4] The mechanics of building a mixed-carrier itinerary are covered under award routing rules.
An award for travel is valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and when the flight departs, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that end service to a destination. [4] A member who does not comply with published award rules for air travel may, at United's sole discretion, be moved to a different flight, seated in a lower class of service, refused ticketing or boarding, or handled in another way permitted by the rules, without compensation. [4]
Exceptions and limits
- Non-commercial use only. An award may be issued for another person, but not for commercial purposes, and the sale, barter or other transfer of miles, awards or benefits outside United's authorised programmes is prohibited. [4]
- Redeposit is not universal. Miles return to the account after a cancellation or return only where the applicable rules allow it, subject to a service charge, and some awards explicitly exclude redeposit. [4]
- Destination must be served twice over. The destination must be served at the moment of ticketing and again at departure; a later schedule change that drops the route is not United's liability. [4]
- Partner rules govern the partner's part. Routing and destinations on partner awards come from the partner, and partner withdrawals or award cancellations are excluded from United's liability. [4]
- Conflicting earning wording. The programme rules say Premier qualifying credits are not credited for award travel, while the Premier earning page sets a PQP rate for award flights on United and United Express, with PQP credited to the traveller and only on the United-operated parts of a mixed itinerary.
