FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a ticketing time limit?
A ticketing time limit is the deadline by which a held award or fare reservation must be turned into an issued ticket. It sits between booking and ticketing: the reservation is held, but the ticket is not yet final. The rule matters because a hold is temporary; if the reservation is not ticketed by the deadline, the hold can lapse and the reservation may no longer be protected. Programme rules also make ticketing a checkpoint for mileage validity and pricing. For example, Qatar Airways Privilege Club requires Avios and Qcredits to be valid when an Award is issued. [3]

Key takeaways
- A ticketing time limit is the deadline for converting a held reservation into an issued ticket. Until ticketing, the reservation is not the same as a confirmed ticket.
- Qatar Airways Privilege Club requires Avios and Qcredits to be valid when an Award is issued, and expired Avios cannot be redeemed for an Award. [3]
- Privilege Club will not issue award tickets or cabin upgrades for open dates or flights where the member is waitlisted. [3]
- American Airlines AAdvantage cash and miles bookings can only be made on aa.com or the American app, and a reservation placed on hold online must be completed online. [1]
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer applies the miles redemption rate in force at ticket issuance, and a reissue can apply the rate at reissuance to additional charges. [2]
How does a ticketing time limit work?
A ticketing time limit is a deadline attached to a booking that has been held but not yet ticketed. The hold keeps the reservation in place for a limited period; ticketing is the step that converts it into an issued ticket. The deadline is usually set by the programme or the booking channel, and it can sit alongside separate rules on award availability, fare conditions and payment.
Ticketing typically involves recording the ticket number, deducting the miles or points being redeemed, and collecting any taxes, fees or cash co-payment. A hold can therefore be useful while a member checks dates, arranges payment or confirms passenger details. It is not the same as a confirmed award: the reservation remains subject to the ticketing step and to the programme's conditions.
A ticketing time limit is also different from award availability. Availability asks whether a seat can be booked; the time limit asks how long the booking can remain unticketed. A member can therefore find award space, place it on hold and still lose the reservation if the ticket is not issued in time.
What do programme rules say about issuing an award ticket?
Qatar Airways Privilege Club. Privilege Club makes mileage validity part of the ticketing step. Avios and Qcredits must be credited to the member's account and be valid when an Award is issued, and expired Avios cannot be redeemed for an Award. [3] The programme also rules out ticketing some unsettled bookings: it will not issue award tickets or cabin upgrades for open dates or flights where the member is waitlisted. [3]
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. KrisFlyer applies the miles redemption rate in force at ticket issuance. The Miles Redemption Rate at the time of ticket issuance applies, and if the ticket is reissued, the rate at reissuance applies to any additional charges. [2] KrisFlyer also says there is no refund of KrisFlyer miles if the Miles Redemption Rate changes after ticket issuance or reissuance. [2]
American Airlines AAdvantage. AAdvantage cash and miles bookings can only be made on aa.com or in the American app. [1] If a cash and miles reservation is placed on hold online, the member must complete the booking online. [1] That makes the booking channel part of the ticketing path, not just a matter of preference.
What happens when a ticketing deadline passes?
If the deadline passes before ticketing, the hold can lapse. At that point the reservation is no longer protected by the hold, and the programme or airline may release the seat or fare. The practical risk is that the same award space or fare may not be available when the member tries to ticket again.
For Privilege Club, the ticketing moment is also a miles-validity checkpoint. Because Avios and Qcredits must be valid when an Award is issued, a member who reaches the ticketing step with expired Avios cannot use them for that Award. [3] Privilege Club separately says that expired Avios cannot be redeemed for an Award. [3]
For KrisFlyer, the rate consequence turns on the issuance event. The rate at ticket issuance applies, and a reissue can use the rate at reissuance for additional charges. [2] Timing therefore matters even when the reservation itself has not changed. [2]
For AAdvantage, the hold rule is about channel rather than duration. A cash and miles reservation placed on hold online must be completed online, so the member cannot assume the hold can be finished through a different channel. [1]
What are the exceptions and limits?
- Waitlists are not ticketed holds. Privilege Club says it will not issue award tickets or cabin upgrades for open dates or flights where the member is waitlisted. [3] A waitlist therefore does not become a confirmed ticket merely because a member is waiting for space.
- Ticket validity after issue is separate. Privilege Club award tickets or cabin upgrades that are not used or cancelled within one year from the original date of issue expire, and no refund is given. [3] That is a post-ticketing rule, not the ticketing deadline itself.
- Cancellation and reinstatement can have their own rules. American says miles are reinstated at no charge if a trip is cancelled up to one year from the date of purchase, as long as cancellation happens before the first flight departs. [1] This applies after a ticket exists, so it does not extend a pre-ticketing hold.
- Fare conditions can differ. American says cash and miles bookings are not eligible for voluntary changes or exchanges, and to make changes the member must cancel the trip and make a new reservation. [1] Award tickets, by contrast, have no change fees according to the same page. [1]
- Scope. The rules above apply only to the named programme and booking channel; a deadline set by one programme does not establish the rule for another.
Frequently asked questions
Does a held award reservation lock in the miles rate?
Not uniformly. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer applies the Miles Redemption Rate at the time of ticket issuance, and if the ticket is reissued, the rate at reissuance applies to any additional charges. [2] Qatar Airways Privilege Club requires Avios and Qcredits to be valid when an Award is issued. [3]
Can I ticket an award for a waitlisted flight?
Qatar Airways Privilege Club says it will not issue award tickets or cabin upgrades for open dates or flights where the member is waitlisted. [3]
What happens to my miles if I cancel after ticketing?
American Airlines AAdvantage says miles are reinstated at no charge if a trip is cancelled up to one year from the date of purchase, as long as the cancellation happens before the first flight departs. [1] Qatar Airways Privilege Club says award tickets or cabin upgrades not used or cancelled within one year from the original date of issue expire, with no refund. [3]
Is a ticketing time limit the same as ticket validity?
