US domestic first class vs business class: how they compare

US domestic first class and business class are the premium cabins that US airlines sell on their own flights, and the label buys different things depending on the airline: Delta Air Lines sells Delta First as a spacious seat with personal flight attendant service and priority services, while JetBlue Airways sells Mint, a cabin in which every seat converts to a fully lie-flat bed, on all transatlantic flights and on selected coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights. [2] [5]

Key takeaways

  • An identical cabin label does not describe an identical seat: Delta Air Lines positions Delta First around a spacious seat and personal flight attendant service, and sells its lie-flat product with lounge access as Delta One on long-haul flights. [2]
  • JetBlue Airways sells one premium cabin, Mint, across all its transatlantic flights and on selected coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights. [5]
  • On JetBlue, the fare family inside Mint decides lounge access, the checked bag allowance and change fees, so the cabin name alone does not tell you what you get. [5]

How do the cabins differ by airline?

Delta Air Lines groups its cabin products under named experiences. Delta First is described as its premiere onboard experience, offering a spacious seat, personal flight attendant service and priority services, and Delta lists it as now also available in a Basic version. [2] Delta One is described as Delta's most exceptional onboard experience and is offered on long-haul flights with a lie-flat seat, chef-curated meals, lounge access and priority services. [2]

JetBlue Airways sells the same premium cabin, Mint, on all transatlantic flights and on select coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights. [5] The seat depends on the aircraft: every Mint seat on the A321LR, and on A321neo aircraft with Mint, is a private suite with direct aisle access, while rows 2 and 4 on the A321 Classic with Mint are suites. [5] The front-row Mint Studio, with a 22-inch screen, mirrored vanity, extra storage and a guest seat and table, is available on the A321LR and A321neo. [5] JetBlue describes Mint seats as the longest fully flat beds in the US domestic premium market, at up to 6 ft 8 in. [5]

What meals, boarding and baggage are included?

Mint fares include a restaurant-inspired small plates menu, created with Crown Shy for lunch and dinner and Birdee for breakfast on most flights; departures from the Caribbean and Latin America, and summer seasonal routes departing from Europe, are excluded. [5] Breakfast is served on flights departing before 9:46 a.m., lunch or dinner on flights departing between 9:47 a.m. and 7 p.m. and on westbound flights leaving at 7 p.m. or later, and the Shuteye menu on eastbound-only flights leaving at 7 p.m. or later. [5] A Savor & Sleep express evening service runs on all coast-to-coast flights within the US departing after 8 p.m., and is available as an option on transatlantic lunch and dinner flights. [5] Special meals include Kosher (except on departures from the Caribbean and Costa Rica), vegetarian or vegan, low calorie, gluten-free and a Plane Eats option, and must be ordered at least 24 hours before departure. [5]

Mint passengers get dedicated check-in, priority security and Group 1 boarding, and checked bags receive priority handling. [5] The allowance itself varies by fare, as JetBlue's own comparison shows. [5]

Does domestic business class include lounge access?

On JetBlue, complimentary entry to the BlueHouse lounges at JFK and Boston comes with a Mint or Mint Flex fare. [5] A Mint Base fare does not include BlueHouse access as part of the fare unless the traveller is otherwise eligible or buys access, and Mosaic 4 members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers are eligible for complimentary access on a Mint Base fare. [5] Delta lists lounge access among the features of Delta One, its long-haul product, alongside the lie-flat seat. [2]

Can you upgrade into a domestic premium cabin?

JetBlue does not offer complimentary space-available upgrades into Mint: Mosaic members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers who book an eligible Main or EvenMore fare can only receive complimentary space-available upgrades on flights that offer the BlueFirst experience. [5] A paid move is possible instead. A customer holding a Main seat booked with cash, points or Cash + Points can request a Mint upgrade at the airport for an additional fee, subject to availability, at check-in, the gate or the JustAsk Desk, and requests are honoured first come, first served. [5] Such a move does not add priority security, extra checked bags or bonus TrueBlue points, and the checked bag allowance stays based on the original fare, Mosaic status or cardmember status. [5] TrueBlue points cannot be redeemed to move from Main to Mint; they can only be used for new Mint bookings. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Route coverage. Mint is available on all JetBlue transatlantic flights and only on selected coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America flights, so the cabin is not an option on every route. [5]
  • Mint Base restrictions. Change and cancellation fees apply on Mint Base fares while Mint and Mint Flex carry no change or cancellation fees, and a cancelled Mint Base fare returns a travel credit minus a fee. [5]
  • One experience per reservation. If one traveller books Mint and another books Main, they must be on two separate reservations. [5]
  • Voluntary standby. A Mint passenger who chooses standby on an earlier flight without Mint forfeits the Mint experience with no compensation. [5]
  • Same-day changes. A same-day change may run from Mint to Mint or from Mint to Main only, and a Main or EvenMore seat cannot be changed same-day into Mint without exchanging the ticket and paying any fare difference. [5]
  • Unaccompanied minors. Unaccompanied minors cannot be booked in Mint seats. [5]

Frequently asked questions

Do JetBlue Mint seats lie fully flat?

Yes. All Mint seats and suites convert to a fully lie-flat bed, and on the A321LR and A321neo every Mint seat is a private suite with direct aisle access. [5]

Is Delta One the same cabin as Delta First?

No. Delta presents Delta One as its most exceptional onboard experience, offered on long-haul flights with a lie-flat seat, chef-curated meals and lounge access, while Delta First is described with a spacious seat, personal flight attendant service and priority services. [2]

Can Mosaic members get a free upgrade to Mint?

No. Mosaic members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers booking an eligible Main or EvenMore fare can receive complimentary space-available upgrades only on flights offering the BlueFirst experience, not on Mint. [5]

Does a Mint Base fare include lounge access?

Not as a fare feature. Mint Base travellers need to be otherwise eligible or buy access, although Mosaic 4 members and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers qualify for complimentary BlueHouse access on a Mint Base fare. [5]
