FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is an alliance award?

An alliance award is a single award ticket, issued by one frequent-flyer programme and paid for with that programme's miles, that covers flights operated by one or more airlines in the same airline alliance. It matters because it lets a member reach several carriers from one mileage balance, but the alliance itself is not the rule-maker: the issuing programme sets the award levels and the ticket conditions, and the airline operating each flight supplies the seat. Alliance membership on its own does not create a shared award chart or a shared booking channel, so the rules that apply are the ones the issuing programme publishes. [6]

Key takeaways

  • An alliance award is one ticket for a journey that mixes flights from several carriers in the same alliance, bought with miles from a single programme rather than from the airline doing the flying.
  • The alliance is an arrangement between airlines, not a currency and not a rulebook: each programme prices partner travel in its own way, and the ticket is governed by the programme that issues it.
  • In United MileagePlus, routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners, and partner offers are governed by the terms set by that partner. [6]
  • Once a MileagePlus award ticket is issued, the taxes, fees, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier operating the flight may apply. [6]

How does an alliance award work?

An alliance award begins with a programme, not with an airline. The member chooses the programme holding usable miles, asks that programme for a ticket that includes flights operated by its partner carriers, and pays the mileage level the programme has set for that journey. The programme issues the ticket; the partner airlines provide the flights. Because the ticket carries more than one carrier, travellers often describe it as a multi-carrier or partner award rather than a simple return on a single airline.

This structure explains why an alliance award can behave differently from a ticket bought directly from the operating airline. Alliance membership is a commercial arrangement between carriers; it is not a shared currency, and it does not merge the programmes into one. Two programmes in the same alliance can price the same partner flights at different levels, attach different conditions to changes and cancellations, and permit different routings. The rules that matter are the ones published by the programme that issues the ticket.

In United MileagePlus, the programme establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, including the number of miles needed for each award. [6] Awards may be issued by MileagePlus in the member's name, or in the name and for the use of another person, but only for non-commercial purposes. [6] Awards and benefits do not constitute property of the member and are not transferable except as the programme's rules allow. [6]

Who sets the routing and the price of an alliance award?

For MileagePlus, the programme keeps control of the price and the booking process. United may withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award, increase the mileage or cash required or the applicable co-pays, and modify or regulate the transferability of awards or benefits, with or without notice. [6]

Routing is a separate question, and the answer sits with the carriers. United's rules state that routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners. [6] Offers made by a partner are governed by the terms and conditions that partner sets, and partners are independent entities rather than agents of the programme. [6]

Which airlines a member can use is also a decision for the programme. In MileagePlus, "Partners" covers airlines, banks, rental car companies, hotels and other entities other than United that offer products, services or other benefits, or that allow members to accrue or redeem mileage; United determines which partner airlines are eligible and may change that list at any time in its sole discretion, with or without notice. [6]

Whose ticket rules apply after the award is issued?

The issuing programme's rules and the operating carrier's conditions both travel with the ticket. MileagePlus award tickets may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6] The person using the award ticket is responsible for departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and any other fees, charges or taxes that apply. [6]

An award for travel is valid only to destinations served both at the time the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure, and neither United nor its partners is liable for schedule changes that result in service to a destination being cancelled. [6] After an award ticket has been issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests. [6]

An alliance award is also not a way to build a balance. Award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets purchased with a combination of miles and money, except as United expressly permits. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Partner withdrawal. United accepts no liability for a partner leaving the programme, for award or offer changes, or for cancellations of awards caused by a partner's withdrawal. [6]
  • Refused redemptions. United reserves the right to deny mileage redemption in connection with a partner product or service where redemption of mileage is prohibited by law or otherwise. [6]
  • Cancelled and returned awards. When a redeemed award is later cancelled or returned under the programme's rules or the ticketed fare rules, the miles taken for it are redeposited subject to a service charge; some awards are not eligible for redeposit and state so. [6]
  • Programme changes. United may change the programme's rules, benefits and mileage levels at any time with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of miles or certificates already accumulated, and accrued mileage, status and awards do not give members vested rights. [6]
  • Scope. The rules above are United MileagePlus's own; another programme sets its own award levels, routing rules and ticket conditions for the partner flights it sells.
