FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are connecting rooms?

Connecting rooms are two hotel guest rooms joined by an internal door that opens from inside either room, so a family or group can move between the two without stepping into the corridor. The door is a feature of the building rather than a rate or a loyalty benefit, so a request for a connecting pair is a preference that the property meets, or does not meet, when it assigns rooms.

Key takeaways

  • Connecting rooms are two guest rooms with a door between them; the door is part of the building's layout, not a separate rate or a loyalty benefit.
  • A connecting request is a preference that the property tries to satisfy when it assigns rooms, so booking two rooms does not by itself create a connecting pair.
  • Loyalty rules treat a second room as a billing question rather than a layout question: Marriott Bonvoy counts charges on up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates towards a member's Qualifying Charges when the member stays in one of the rooms and pays. [2]
  • Extra-person charges are handled by property type: they are Qualifying Charges at all-inclusive properties on paid stays at a Qualifying Rate, but are excluded from award stays at Atlantis, Paradise Island. [2]

What makes two hotel rooms connecting?

Two rooms are connecting when a door set into the wall between them can be opened from either side. Guests still hold two room keys and still have two doors onto the corridor, but they can pass between the rooms without going out into the hallway. Rooms that sit side by side without that internal door are usually described as adjoining, and hotels do not always use the two words in the same way, so it is worth checking which one a confirmation uses.

Because the door is part of the structure, only rooms built or later converted as pairs can offer it. A property may have a handful of such pairs, or none in a particular room category, which is why the request is settled at room assignment rather than at the point of sale.

A connecting pair stays two rooms for every practical purpose: each room keeps its own occupancy limit, its own rate and its own bill, and an open connecting door does not turn the pair into a suite.

How do you request connecting rooms?

A connecting request is normally recorded on the reservation as a preference rather than as a confirmed feature, and the property decides which rooms to pair when it assigns rooms for the arrival day. The answer that settles the matter therefore comes from the hotel rather than from the booking screen.

  • Ask when you book, and repeat the request on both reservations so the two bookings can be matched to each other.
  • Book the same room type for both rooms where you can; a connecting pair that mixes two different categories may not exist in the building.
  • Ask for the pair to be confirmed, rather than for the request simply to be noted, and keep the reply with the booking.
  • Keep a fallback ready, such as a room type that holds the whole party, in case the pair is not available on the night.

Requests are easier to meet when they are made early and repeated close to arrival, since the pairing is decided by the front office rather than by the sales channel.

Do extra rooms and extra guests earn points?

Families and groups often book two rooms, and loyalty programmes treat the second room differently from the first. Under the Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Program Terms & Conditions, updated October 2026, a member's Qualifying Charges include charges on the member's own folio and on up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, provided the member is a registered guest in one of the reserved rooms, gives their membership number at reservation or check-in, and pays for the charges. [2] The rooms do not need to connect for this to apply: the rule turns on who pays and which nights are booked, not on the door between the rooms.

Membership itself stays individual. Marriott Bonvoy accounts may not be opened, maintained or used for a company, group, association or other non-individual purpose, so a group booking does not create a shared account or a joint balance. [2]

Extra guests sharing a room can change what counts for earning. At All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resorts, and at participating properties that run all-inclusive packages year-round and are designated as all-inclusive by the programme, extra-person charges on paid stays at a Qualifying Rate are listed among Qualifying Charges. [2] An award stay at Atlantis, Paradise Island works the other way: the award covers the standard room rate and room tax only, and extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility. [2] For the general rules on paying for another person in the same room, see hotel extra-person charge.

Exceptions and limits

  • The request is not the confirmation. A note on a reservation records a preference; the property's room assignment on the day decides whether the pair exists, and layouts vary by building, by room category and by rate plan.
  • Two rooms, two limits. A connecting door does not merge occupancy limits, rates or bills, and it does not convert a pair of rooms into a suite.
  • Same dates, one payer. The Marriott Bonvoy allowance for additional rooms requires the same check-in and check-out dates for each room, the member's membership number on the booking or at check-in, and payment by the member. [2]
  • No group account. Marriott Bonvoy accounts are individual, and using one for a group or entity purpose is outside the programme rules. [2]
  • Property-level exclusions. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, award redemption stays cover the standard room rate and room tax only, and The Reef at Atlantis, The Beach at Atlantis and Harborside at Atlantis do not participate in Marriott Bonvoy at all. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Do I earn points on a second room booked for my family?

For Marriott Bonvoy, up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates can count towards your Qualifying Charges, as long as you stay in one of the reserved rooms as a registered guest, give your membership number at reservation or check-in, and pay for the charges. [2]

Do extra-person charges earn points?

At All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resorts and at participating properties running all-inclusive packages year-round, extra-person charges on paid stays at a Qualifying Rate are listed among Qualifying Charges. [2]

Are extra-person charges included in an award stay?

At Atlantis, Paradise Island an award redemption stay covers the standard room rate and room tax only; extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges remain the member's responsibility. [2]

Can a group share one account across several rooms?

No. Marriott Bonvoy accounts are for individual members and may not be used for a group or other non-individual purpose, although one member can still earn on up to two additional rooms booked for the same dates. [2]
