How to plan a family hotel stay: children and extra guests

Marriott Bonvoy, the loyalty programme of Marriott International, applies two layers of rules to a family stay: programme terms that set the age for holding an account, the rooms that earn points and what an award covers, and property conditions that can bill extra-person charges an award does not include. [5]

Key takeaways

  • A Marriott Bonvoy account is available to individuals who are at least 18 years old or have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence. [5]
  • One member can earn points on their own room plus up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, provided the member stays in one of the rooms and pays. [5]
  • On an Award Redemption Stay at Atlantis, Paradise Island, the award covers the standard room rate and room tax only; extra-person charges, resort fees and service charges are the member's responsibility. [5]
  • Points or cash can be traded for a larger room or suite at selected hotels when the upgrade is applied during booking. [7]

How many hotel rooms can one member earn points on?

Marriott Bonvoy treats charges on the member's own guest room folio, and on up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, as qualifying charges. [5] A family spread across three rooms — the member's room plus two — can therefore earn points on the whole bill. [5]

Three conditions apply: the member must give their membership number at the time of reservation or at check-in, must stay in one of the reserved guest rooms as the registered guest, and must pay for the charges. [5] Charges from food and beverage outlets managed or operated by a third party may not be eligible, and charges incurred at outlets outside the property are not qualifying charges. [5]

If credit for one of the rooms does not appear, missing-credit requests must be received within one year of the activity and remain subject to the applicable posting timelines, request channels, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures. [5] The mechanics of spreading a booking across rooms are covered in multiple rooms on points and night credit.

What are extra-person charges and does a points award cover them?

Whether an award covers everyone in the room depends on the property. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, an Award Redemption Stay includes the standard room rate and room tax only, and extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility and are not included. [5] That property participates in Marriott Bonvoy in a limited capacity, and the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift benefit is not available there. [5]

Paid stays at all-inclusive properties are treated differently for earning: at All-Inclusive Resorts and at properties offering all-inclusive packages year-round that Marriott designates as all-inclusive, qualifying charges include extra-person charges on paid stays at a qualifying rate. [5]

Award inventory can change. Marriott reserves the right to add blackout dates, to limit the rooms available for reward redemption at any participating hotel, and to change which hotels take part. [1] Free Night Awards are listed with varying point values, and stays start at 12,000 points a night as of 18 October 2026. [7]

How do you get a bigger room for a family with points?

Marriott lists room upgrades that trade points or cash for a better view or a larger suite, available at select hotels and resorts and applied during booking. [7] Members with Gold Elite status or above can also request a Nightly Upgrade Award after booking, from the Confirmation or Reservation Details page. [7]

Cash + Points is a third route: the booking flow asks members to select "Use Points/Awards" in the hotel search, look for participating hotels that display cash + points rates, and choose the Cash + Points rate. [7] Which brands suit a family best, and how a first award trip is put together, are covered in best hotel programs for family stays and first family award trip step by step.

Do breakfast and meals charged to the room earn points?

Food and beverage charged to the member's folio counts as a qualifying charge, excluding alcoholic beverages or tobacco where prohibited by law, and the property may exclude charges at outlets it does not manage or operate. [5] The same folio rule extends to the two additional guest rooms booked on the same dates. [5]

Breakfast that comes with elite recognition is a separate question from earning points, and availability varies by property: at Atlantis, Paradise Island, the breakfast option tied to the Elite Welcome Gift benefit is not available. [5] The benefit itself is explained in breakfast benefit.

What are the age limits and exceptions?

  • Age of the account holder. Membership is free and available to individuals who are at least 18 years of age or have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence, who possess the legal authority to agree to the programme rules, and who reside in a jurisdiction that legally permits participation. [5] The account that earns and redeems for a family trip therefore sits with a member who meets that age test. [5]
  • Extra rooms are not automatic. Points on the two additional rooms depend on identical check-in and check-out dates, the member being a registered guest in one of the rooms, and the member paying the charges; charges on rooms outside those conditions do not qualify. [5]
  • Award rooms can be capped. Marriott may add blackout dates, limit rooms available for reward redemption, withdraw or modify a reward, and change the rules for earning or redeeming points, even where the change affects the value of points already accumulated. [1]
  • Limited-participation properties. Properties and brands that take part in a limited or unique capacity may not offer every benefit, amenity, award or service described in the programme rules. [5]
  • Corrections. Marriott may correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile points, qualifying nights, status or benefits at any time, including where a benefit was issued in error or the member was not eligible. [5]

Frequently asked questions

Can I earn Marriott Bonvoy points on two rooms for my family?

Yes. A member earns on their own folio and up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, as long as they stay in one of the rooms as the registered guest and pay. [5]

Are extra-person charges included in an award stay?

At Atlantis, Paradise Island, an Award Redemption Stay covers the standard room rate and room tax only, so extra-person charges, resort fees and service charges stay on the member's bill. [5]

Do extra-person charges earn points?

At All-Inclusive Resorts and at properties Marriott designates as all-inclusive, extra-person charges on paid stays at a qualifying rate are listed among qualifying charges, so those amounts earn points. [5]

Can I use points to book a suite for a family?

Room upgrades for a larger suite can be bought with points or cash at select hotels and resorts, and the award is applied during booking. [7]
