Best Hotel Programs for Family Stays

How many rooms can a family earn on?

Hilton’s terms use the idea of “Earning Rooms”: a member may earn Base Points for up to four rooms per Stay if all Eligible Spend for those rooms is paid on one folio. [1] Elite Stay and night credit is separate, and Hilton awards it for one room only. [1] Most marketing-partner or promotional bonuses are also awarded on one room only, and an upgrade is given for one room per member during a qualifying Stay regardless of how many rooms are booked. [1]

Marriott Bonvoy’s Qualifying Charges include the member’s own room and up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [2] The member must provide the membership number, stay in one of the reserved rooms as the registered guest and pay for the charges. [2]

Hilton also publishes a “2nd Guest Stays Free” benefit: a guest stays free in the member’s room on qualifying stays when there are additional charges for double occupancy. [1] That benefit excludes stays where the room rate includes extra components such as food and beverage, activities or parking, as well as specialised room rates, taxes quoted per person or per room, and all-inclusive hotels. [1]

Breakfast and lounge access

Hilton’s MyWay on-property benefit can be complimentary continental breakfast or a Daily Food & Beverage Credit, and the choice varies by brand and region. [1] Qualification for on-property benefits, including that breakfast or credit, requires a confirmed reservation through Hilton’s listed direct or designated channels; benefits are not awarded for third-party website bookings, opaque channels or ineligible stays. [1]

At hotels with Executive Lounges, Hilton Gold members and one additional guest receive access only if they are upgraded to the Executive Floor or to a room type that confers lounge access. [1] Diamond members receive access for themselves and up to one additional registered guest even without a room upgrade. [1] The entitlement excludes executive suites, villas and specified “Club” accommodation types unless the initial booking was also an Enclave-level room, and a member with lounge access that includes breakfast seven days a week is not eligible for the daily food and beverage credit. [1]

The Marriott Bonvoy terms checked do not set out a general family breakfast or lounge rule; they do state that at Atlantis, Paradise Island, the breakfast option in the Elite Welcome Gift is not available. [2]

Sharing points

Marriott Bonvoy accounts are individual and may not be shared, jointly held, sold, bartered or transferred except as expressly permitted. [2] Gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count as Qualifying Activity. [2] Limited transfers on death or divorce may be permitted only with company authorisation and documentation. [2]

Exceptions and limits

• Hilton benefits and services can vary by participating hotel, and not all amenities are provided at all participating hotels. [1]
• Hilton’s lounge benefit covers the member and one additional guest, not the whole family, and may depend on an upgrade or on the booked room type. [1]
• Marriott Bonvoy includes properties with limited or unique participation, such as All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy, Design Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, so family benefits can differ by property. [2]
