FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is cruise loyalty priority check-in?
Cruise loyalty priority check-in is a tier benefit that gives eligible members of a cruise line's loyalty programme a dedicated or faster check-in line at the cruise terminal before they board, so passport and booking formalities take less time. It is published in a programme's tier-benefit table and is not the same thing as priority boarding, which governs the order in which passengers enter the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line, for example, lists “Priority Check-In / Embarkation” as a benefit from the Platinum tier upwards in its Latitudes Rewards programme. [2]

Key takeaways
- Priority check-in covers the terminal stage before boarding: document checks and the issue of the keycard used on board. Some programmes publish it as its own line; Norwegian Cruise Line publishes it under a combined “Priority Check-In / Embarkation” label. [2]
- In Latitudes Rewards the benefit is included from Platinum (75 points) through Sapphire (150), Diamond (350) and Ambassador (700), and is not listed for Bronze, Silver or Gold. [2] [4]
- Latitudes Rewards tier benefits apply on sailings of 5 nights or longer. [2]
- Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society ties priority access and elevated benefits to its 80-cruise-point tier. [6]
How is priority check-in different from priority boarding?
Check-in takes place on land, inside the terminal. Cruise line staff confirm that a traveller's documents match the booking and issue the keycard that serves as cabin key and on-board account card; Norwegian Cruise Line tells members to present that keycard to receive their tier benefits and discounts. [2] Boarding is the later step, when passengers are called to walk on to the ship, usually in groups. Priority check-in speeds up the first stage, while priority boarding affects the second.
Programmes often fold the two into one entitlement. Latitudes Rewards carries a single line, “Priority Check-In / Embarkation”, in its onboard-benefits table, marked as included for Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador members. [2] [4] The same table also lists priority tender tickets and priority disembarkation as separate items, so the terminal check-in step is only one part of what a higher tier receives. [2] The general priority embarkation entry covers the boarding side in more detail.
Which Latitudes Rewards tiers include priority check-in?
Norwegian Cruise Line publishes the entitlement per tier rather than as a single programme-wide promise. The table below reproduces the tier levels and the priority line as they appear on the Latitudes Rewards benefit list. [2] [4]
| Tier | Points | Priority Check-In / Embarkation |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1 | Not included |
| Silver | 20 | Not included |
| Gold | 45 | Not included |
| Platinum | 75 | Included |
| Sapphire | 150 | Included |
| Diamond | 350 | Included |
| Ambassador | 700 | Included |
The benefit applies on sailings of 5 nights or longer, the condition Norwegian Cruise Line attaches to benefits per tier level. [2]
How do you earn the points that unlock it?
Latitudes Rewards enrolment is automatic after a first cruise, and members earn one point for every cruise night. [2] Two bonuses can accelerate progress toward Platinum and the tiers above it:
- One additional point per night for booking a full-fare suite at the time the reservation was originally made, or The Haven; Club Balcony Suites are excluded. [2]
- One additional point per night when booking a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer; Suites and The Haven are excluded from this bonus. [2]
Missing points can only be credited to a Latitudes Rewards account for cruises taken within the previous 12 months. [2]
Where is eligibility for priority check-in published?
Norwegian Cruise Line sets out the benefit in the tier table on its Latitudes Rewards pages and directs members to the Latitudes Rewards Terms & Conditions for further detail. [2] [4] Royal Caribbean International's Crown & Anchor Society builds status from cruise points, with tiers at 3, 30, 55, 80, 175 and 700 cruise points, and describes the 80-point level as bringing priority access and elevated benefits. [6] Celebrity Cruises' Captain's Club publishes benefits by tier, from Classic at 2–149 Club Points through Select, Elite, Elite Plus and Zenith at 3,000 points and above. [7] Royal Caribbean Group applies one-for-one tier matching across Crown & Anchor, Captain's Club and Silversea's Venetian Society, with benefit exclusions and up to seven days for a matched status to take effect. [6] [7]
Exceptions and limits
- Sailing length. Latitudes Rewards benefits per tier level are available on sailings of 5 nights or longer; onboard discounts, including shore-excursion pre-booking, are available on all sailings regardless of length. [2]
- Itinerary rules at Celebrity. Captain's Club benefits are designed for Celebrity sailings, and some itineraries and products may have different rules; Galapagos and river cruises can carry their own inclusions. [7]
- Hotel, not terminal. The “priority check-in” wording on the Captain's Club page refers to an MGM Resorts partner benefit at Bellagio, ARIA and MGM Grand — a hotel arrival service rather than a cruise terminal one. [7]
- Status match timing. Cross-brand status matching carries benefit exclusions and should be allowed up to seven days to take effect. [6]
- Group brands. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings says it honours Latitudes status on board when members sail Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises. [2]
- Claiming benefits. Members must present their keycard to receive Latitudes Rewards benefits and discounts. [2]
Frequently asked questions
Which Latitudes Rewards tiers get priority check-in?
Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador. Bronze, Silver and Gold members are shown as not included for the “Priority Check-In / Embarkation” line. [2]
Does priority check-in apply on a short cruise?
Norwegian Cruise Line attaches its benefits per tier level to sailings of 5 nights or longer, so a shorter voyage falls outside that condition. [2]
Is priority check-in the same as priority boarding?
No: check-in is the terminal formality, and boarding is the order in which passengers enter the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line lists the two together as one “Priority Check-In / Embarkation” benefit, while treating tender tickets and disembarkation as separate entries. [2]
Where should a member confirm eligibility before sailing?
On the programme's own tier-benefit page and terms: Norwegian Cruise Line points members to its Latitudes Rewards Terms & Conditions, and Celebrity notes that some itineraries and products may follow different rules. [2] [7]
