Cruise loyalty programmes: value the sailing you would take anyway
Cruise programmes usually reward completed sailings on one brand. Check how points accrue, who receives them and whether the perks apply to your ship and cabin before chasing status.
Find out how each programme counts a cruise
Check whether points are based on nights sailed, each completed voyage, cabin category, spending or a promotion. Suites, solo occupancy, long sailings or special offers may change earning. Discounted, complimentary or industry-rate bookings may be excluded. Confirm which passenger is credited, when points post and whether missing points can be claimed.
Then identify whether points are redeemable currency or only progress toward a tier. A status balance is not automatically cash or a future cruise credit.
Value perks against the sailing you want
List the benefits you would actually use: booking discounts, onboard credit, drinks or internet, priority services, lounge access or dedicated support. Check whether each perk is per member, per cabin or per sailing, whether it must be booked in advance and whether a minimum sailing length or ship restriction applies.
Compare any extra cost you would incur to reach a tier with the value of benefits you will use. If reaching the next level requires a more expensive cabin or an unwanted itinerary, price the difference before deciding.
Three programme models
- Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor: Cruise Points are based on eligible nights sailed, with additional points for qualifying suites or solo pricing. New-tier benefits generally start on a later sailing after points post.
- NCL Latitudes Rewards: primarily tracks completed nights, with additional earning on some suite bookings and Insider Offers; some reduced or complimentary fares are excluded.
- MSC Voyagers Club: offers tier-based booking and onboard benefits. Terms distinguish personal benefits from cabin benefits, and conditions may depend on cruise length, age or booking timing.
These examples describe programme structures, not a ranking. Check current terms before you book.
Before booking
- Add the membership number and confirm each eligible passenger is listed correctly.
- Save the fare, cabin category and final payment record.
- Check personal versus cabin benefits and whether offers can combine.
- Review current status-match rules and validity if comparing sister brands.
- Use the cruise line's current website; older forum figures may be outdated.
