FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a fifth night free?
Fifth night free is a hotel award-stay benefit that removes the points cost of the fifth consecutive night of an award stay, so a five-night points booking is priced as four nights. It is a programme-specific benefit, not a universal feature of hotel award charts: each hotel loyalty programme that offers one sets out its own conditions, and the remaining nights keep whatever points price the programme assigns them. Because award nights are usually priced one night at a time, the size of the saving depends on what that fifth night would otherwise have cost.

Key takeaways
- The benefit is counted in nights, not in a percentage: one night's points price drops out of a run of consecutive award nights.
- Whether a stay qualifies is decided by the programme's own terms, so the same phrase can describe different rules at different programmes.
- Award-night prices vary by property and by date, so the number of points saved by the free night varies with the stay: in Marriott Bonvoy, free night awards are redeemable at thousands of properties with varying point values, and award stays are advertised from 12,000 points a night. [5]
- What a night actually costs can change when certificates or cash-plus-points rates are involved; in Marriott Bonvoy, Cash + Points rates appear only at participating hotels that display them. [5]
How does a fifth night free benefit work?
Hotel award charts normally price a stay night by night, and the price of a night can differ between properties and between dates. A fifth-night-free benefit sits on top of that pricing rather than replacing it: instead of discounting every night, it removes the points charge for one night in a run of consecutive award nights. A five-night award stay therefore costs the points total of four nights under the programme's own pricing.
The benefit is usually written around consecutive nights because it rewards a single longer stay rather than a series of short ones. That structure is also where most of the practical questions come from: a stay that is split across two reservations, moved between properties, or shortened after booking may no longer present the same run of nights that the benefit was written for.
The term does not describe a free stay. It describes one free night inside an award stay paid with points. It also does not describe a discount on cash rates: a paid booking is priced in money, and a points benefit does not apply to it unless the programme's terms say otherwise.
What decides whether the fifth night is free?
Programmes that offer the benefit write their own rules, so the questions below are the ones that decide whether a particular booking qualifies. Each is answered in the programme's own terms, and the answers are not transferable from one programme to another.
- The shape of the stay. Whether the free night requires five consecutive nights in one booking at one property, and how a stay split into two reservations is treated.
- Which night is removed. Whether the programme removes the price of the fifth night as priced, the cheapest night of the stay, or another night chosen by its own method.
- Room type and suites. Whether the benefit is limited to standard rooms and how an upgraded room or suite is handled.
- Free night certificates. Whether a certificate can pay for one of the nights, and whether a certificate night still counts toward the run of consecutive nights.
- Cash-plus-points nights. Whether a night paid partly with cash counts toward the run, and whether the free night can fall on such a night.
- Changes after booking. What happens to the pricing if the stay is shortened, extended or cancelled, and whether points are returned in full.
- The points themselves. Whether the account holds enough valid points for the nights that are still charged, and when those points expire.
How are award nights priced in Marriott Bonvoy?
Because a fifth night free removes one night's price rather than a fixed number of points, the underlying award chart does most of the work. Marriott Bonvoy's redemption page says Free Night Awards are redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide, with varying point values, and are applied during booking. [5] The same page advertises redemption across more than 30 hotel brands and 10,000 destinations, with award stays starting at 12,000 points a night. [5]
Two further rate types change what an individual night costs. PointSavers offers up to 20% off with exclusive rates at participating hotels, booked by selecting "Use Points/Awards" in a hotel search and choosing a PointSavers rate from the list. [5] Cash + Points works through the same search: the member looks for participating hotels displaying available cash + points rates and selects the Cash + Points rate to book. [5] A related page covers hotel points-plus-cash awards in more detail.
Upgrade awards sit alongside the night price rather than inside it. Nightly Upgrade Awards are requested after booking, from the Confirmation or Reservation Details page, and are available to Gold Elite members and above. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Properties can leave the programme. Marriott Bonvoy states that if a participating property or brand exits the programme, awards, promotions and special offers are no longer valid after the exit date, even if the reservation was made before that date. [3]
- Cancellations after points expiry. An award redeemed before point forfeiture remains valid unless it is cancelled after the applicable points expiration date; if it is, and the member has not completed qualifying activity to extend that date, the points used for the award expire. [3]
- Closing the account. If a member cancels a Marriott Bonvoy account, unredeemed points, awards, Free Night Awards and Nightly Upgrade Awards are cancelled or forfeited immediately and may not be reinstated, apart from what the rules or applicable law expressly permit. [3]
- Programme changes. Marriott Bonvoy may change redemption levels, award availability and the rules for redeeming points with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of points or the ability to obtain a particular award. [3]
- Keeping points alive. Members must have qualifying activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, awards and other benefits; earning or redeeming points, buying points, completing a qualifying stay and converting points with designated partners count, while gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not. [3]
- No cash value. Points, awards and other member benefits have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered or transferred except as the programme rules expressly permit. [3]
Frequently asked questions
Is the fifth night free on every five-night hotel stay?
The phrase describes an award-stay benefit that reduces the points price of a stay; it does not change the cash price of a paid rate. Whether a particular stay qualifies, and which nights count toward it, is set by the programme's own terms rather than by the length of the booking alone.
Do award nights cost the same number of points at every hotel?
No. In Marriott Bonvoy, Free Night Awards are redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide with varying point values, and award stays are advertised from 12,000 points a night. [5] A removed night is therefore worth different amounts of points at different hotels.
Can one night of an award stay be paid partly with cash?
In Marriott Bonvoy, Cash + Points rates are bookable at participating hotels that display them, chosen through the "Use Points/Awards" search. [5] Availability is limited to the hotels and dates showing such rates.
What happens to an award stay if the hotel leaves the programme?
Marriott Bonvoy says awards and other offers are no longer valid after the date a participating property or brand exits the programme, even if the reservation was made before that date. [3]
Can a programme change the points price of an award night?
Under the Marriott Bonvoy rules, redemption levels and award availability can be changed with or without notice, including in ways that affect the value of points. [3]
