FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a first class award?

A first class award is a redemption of frequent flyer miles or points for a seat in a first class cabin, the highest cabin an airline sells on aircraft that have one. The cabin you book changes the price, because British Airways says the Avios and cash price of a Reward Flight depends on the date, destination and class of travel, [1] and award seats are never guaranteed: American Airlines says members may not be able to use AAdvantage miles for travel to all destinations or on all flights, [2] and United says any award may be withdrawn and restrictions may be imposed at any time. [3]

Key takeaways

  • An award seat is priced by the program that issues the miles, and each program describes itself as setting that price. [1] [2] [3]
  • British Airways prices a Reward Flight as a fixed Avios amount plus a fixed cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges, but the cash amount is variable when the flight is operated by Iberia, American Airlines or a oneworld partner. [1]
  • American Airlines and United both say award seats can be limited, withdrawn or repriced, and American says partner awards may carry special restrictions on seating availability. [2] [3]

How is a first class award priced?

Award pricing comes from the rules of the program that holds your miles, not from the cash fare printed on the seat. [1] [2] [3]

The British Airways Club. British Airways calls a flight booked with Avios a Reward Flight and describes the price as a fixed Avios amount plus a fixed cash amount that covers taxes, fees and carrier charges. [1] The Avios and cash price depends on the date, destination and class of travel, so the cabin you choose is part of the calculation. [1] Travel dates are sold as peak or off-peak, and moving a booking from an off-peak date to a peak date may require additional Avios. [1]

AAdvantage. American Airlines says a flight award on American Airlines and American Eagle flights may be used for any available seat, including the last seat, but the number of miles required may be higher depending on availability. [2] Any flight award may be withdrawn, or made subject to increased mileage requirements or new restrictions, at any time before ticketing. [2]

MileagePlus. United establishes the amount, structure, availability and other criteria for award redemption, including the miles each award costs, and may increase or decrease the miles required, withdraw an award or impose restrictions at any time with or without notice. [3]

How many award seats do programs promise?

British Airways guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on its own flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick: at least eight seats in economy (Euro Traveller and World Traveller), two in premium economy (World Traveller Plus) and four in business (Club Europe and Club World). [1] On flights to and from London City the guarantee is two business seats and two economy seats. [1] The published minimums therefore cover economy, premium economy and business cabins. [1]

Availability behaves differently when the flying is done by a partner. British Airways says its search shows British Airways availability first and then partner availability, and that the number of Avios required for partner flights may vary from British Airways depending on route and distance traveled. [1] American Airlines says flight awards on airline AAdvantage Partners may be subject to special limitations on seating availability, and the miles required may vary with the partner's own availability. [2]

United reserves the right to add blackout dates and to limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations. [3] United also says that routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners. [3]

What fees and routing rules apply?

AAdvantage flight awards are subject to immigration fees, surcharges whether or not a government authority imposes them, departure fees and departure taxes, security fees, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other taxes, fees and surcharges assessed by authorities or airline partners, and any additional fee for each award ticket is payable by credit card. [2] United says the person using an award ticket is responsible for departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees that apply. [3]

Routing caps differ too. AAdvantage flight awards entitle the member to one-way travel unless otherwise noted, with a maximum of three segments per one-way award within the United States or Canada and four segments for other destinations, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. [2] AAdvantage award tickets are valid only on flights marketed and operated by American Airlines or certain AAdvantage Partners. [2] United says award travel is valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and at departure. [3] British Airways lets members combine cabins within one booking, and says itineraries using two or more oneworld partners are priced separately. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Cancellation windows. British Airways says cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary to be eligible for a refund, and that Reward Flights can usually be canceled or changed subject to availability for a small service fee. [1]
  • Part-payment bookings. On an Avios part payment booking, a change from a peak to an off-peak date does not refund the difference in the money portion; British Airways says the member can cancel the original flights for a full refund and book again. [1]
  • Reinstating miles. American Airlines says that after the original ticketing, changes or cancellations may require additional miles or fees for each ticket, due when the ticket is reissued. [2] AAdvantage mileage is reinstated for wholly unused awards canceled before departure if the ticket has not expired; expired tickets and partially used awards are not reinstated. [2] United may impose a service charge for each change or cancellation a member requests. [3]
  • Traveling on someone else's award. AAdvantage award tickets may be issued in any name the member designates when the reservation is ticketed, and the recipient cannot be identified at a later point. [2] United issues awards in the member's name, or in the name and for the use of another person only for non-commercial purposes. [3]
  • Combining with other benefits. AAdvantage flight awards may not be used with any other promotion, coupon, discount or special offer, and members may not combine them with systemwide upgrades unless American Airlines permits it. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Can a first class award be booked on a partner airline?

Yes, within each program's rules. British Airways sells Reward Flights with Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partners, with a variable cash amount instead of a fixed one, [1] and American Airlines says partner flight awards may carry special limits on seating availability. [2]

Are taxes and fees included in a first class award?

It depends on the program. British Airways includes taxes, fees and carrier charges in the fixed cash amount of a Reward Flight, [1] while American Airlines lists surcharges, departure taxes, security fees and passenger facility charges as additional costs payable by credit card on AAdvantage awards. [2]

Can you cancel a first class award and get the miles back?

American Airlines reinstates AAdvantage mileage for wholly unused awards canceled before departure if the ticket has not expired, but not for expired tickets or partially used awards, [2] and British Airways requires cancellation at least 24 hours before the first flight to be eligible for a refund. [1]

Is a Reward Flight the same thing as a first class award?

Reward Flight is British Airways' name for a flight booked with Avios, and the Avios and cash price depends on the class of travel, so a first class seat is a Reward Flight booked in the top cabin. [1]
