FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a hotel corporate rate?

Hotel corporate rate appears in Shangri-La Circle’s programme rules as “negotiated Corporate rate”, one of the rate types listed inside the Qualifying Room Rate definition. [3] That definition controls whether a stay on the rate can earn points and whether its room nights can count as Qualifying Nights. [3]

Key takeaways

  • Shangri-La Circle’s Qualifying Room Rate definition names “negotiated Corporate rate” as one of its listed rate types. [3]
  • A stay on a rate inside that definition can earn points when booked through a Qualifying Room Reservation Channel, and room nights paid at a Qualifying Room Rate can count as Qualifying Nights. [3]
  • A Non-Qualifying Room Rate is any rate other than a Qualifying Room Rate and an Event Qualifying Room Rate; Shangri-La’s examples include negotiated rates to airline crew paid by the airline and airline and travel-industry discounts. [3]

What the Shangri-La Circle rules say

Shangri-La Circle’s Qualifying Room Rate definition covers any published room rate of a Participating Hotel found on the Shangri-La Circle website or booked through a Qualifying Room Reservation Channel. [3] Within that definition, the programme lists “negotiated Corporate rate” together with Rack Rate, Flexible Rate, BonusChoice, Book Early and Save, CustomStay, hotel package, convention or meeting rate, Long Stay Rate and Room Awards Redemption Rate. [3]

The same definition lets Shangri-La include or exclude other room rates at its discretion from time to time. [3] These terms took effect on 28 April 2022. [3]

Does a corporate rate earn points and count toward a membership tier?

In Shangri-La Circle, points are earned on spend at a Qualifying Room Rate, on Qualifying Incidental Charges and on Qualifying Spend, with local currency converted to US dollars for point calculation. [3] A Qualifying Night is a room night paid at a Qualifying Room Rate, and Qualifying Nights count toward qualification for the next membership tier and renewal of the current one. [3] The rules apply at Participating Hotels, which Shangri-La lists as Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, Kerry Hotels, JEN Hotels and Traders hotels, plus other hotels published as participating. [3] Points are credited two weeks after a stay at a Qualifying Room Rate or after payment in full of Qualifying Incidental Charges or Qualifying Spend. [3]

Shangri-La also defines a Non-Qualifying Room Rate as any room rate other than a Qualifying Room Rate and an Event Qualifying Room Rate, including the examples in the table below. [3]

How Shangri-La Circle classifies room rates
Rate bookedHow the programme treats it
negotiated Corporate rate, Rack Rate, Flexible Rate, BonusChoice, Book Early and Save, CustomStay, hotel package, convention or meeting rate, Long Stay Rate, Room Awards Redemption Rate [3]Qualifying Room Rate
Any rate other than a Qualifying Room Rate and an Event Qualifying Room Rate, including rates booked through a channel other than a Qualifying Room Reservation Channel (such as an online travel agent, including prepaid wholesale rates), wholesale packages, groups and tours, airline and travel industry discounts, negotiated rates to airline crew paid by the airline, and rates paid for residences or serviced apartments [3]Non-Qualifying Room Rate

The Non-Qualifying Room Rate definition says “including, but not limited to”, so its examples are not a closed list. [3]

Where does a corporate rate stay have to be booked?

Qualifying Room Reservation Channels include the Shangri-La website, the Shangri-La Circle mobile app, the Shangri-La WeChat Mini Programme, Shangri-La official telephone reservation hotlines, booking with a Participating Hotel directly, and other Shangri-La-approved hotel room reservation channels. [3] Third-party platforms and online travel agents such as Expedia.com, Booking.com, TripAdvisor.com, Ctrip.com and Fliggy.com are not Qualifying Room Reservation Channels unless Shangri-La specifies otherwise. [3] Members who book through other reservation channels cannot earn points or receive Shangri-La Circle benefits and privileges for that stay. [3] Members must quote their membership number when reserving and present their membership card, digital or physical, together with proof of photo identity documents at check-in. [3]

Who has to pay for the room, and can airline miles be earned instead?

The bill for Qualifying Room Rate, Qualifying Incidental Charges and Qualifying Spend must be made in the member’s name, and the member must personally pay all charges in order to earn points, except under Event Rewards. [3] Charges paid by an organisation, convention, association or group do not qualify for points, except pursuant to Shangri-La Circle Event Rewards. [3] For a stay on a corporate rate that falls within Qualifying Room Rate, the member may choose at check-in to earn points or airline miles in one airline partner programme. [3] The member cannot earn both for the same stay, and the choice cannot be amended once made. [3] If no choice is made before check-out, points are credited by default. [3] Airline miles require the airline partner programme membership card at check-in and a name on the reservation that matches it. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Event business. Shangri-La Circle’s Event Qualifying Room Rate expressly excludes global and local corporate negotiated rates, tour operator and wholesale rates, negotiated rates to airline crew and other special rates expressly excluded from Event Rewards. [3] A Qualifying Event must either involve 10 or more paid rooms at an Event Qualifying Room Rate on at least one night at a Participating Hotel, or reach a minimum Eligible Event Charge of USD 3,000 at a Participating Hotel. Rooms paid at a corporate negotiated rate are excluded from Event Qualifying Room Rate, so they cannot count toward the 10-room route. [3]
  • Negotiated but not qualifying. The Non-Qualifying Room Rate definition names airline and travel industry discounts and negotiated rates to airline crew paid by the airline among its examples. [3]
  • Several rooms on one bill. A member who settles the bill for up to three rooms can earn points on those rooms provided they physically occupy one of them. [3] If the member occupies a room booked on a Non-Qualifying Room Rate, points cannot be earned by that member on any other rooms even if those rooms were booked at a Qualifying Room Rate. [3]
  • Marriott Bonvoy account rules. Marriott Bonvoy does not enrol corporations, groups, associations or other entities as members, and an account may not be opened, maintained or used for any company, entity, group, association or other non-individual purpose. [4] The programme also states that membership and benefits are void where prohibited or restricted by an applicable employment policy or other rules applicable to the member. [4]
