FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a last-minute booking?
A last-minute booking is a flight bought shortly before departure rather than weeks or months ahead. What makes it different from an early booking is not the calendar alone but which conditions still apply at that point: a cash ticket is bound to the fare rules sold with it, and an award seat depends on inventory the airline is still willing to release. Both are contracts — American Airlines incorporates its published fare rules and the terms printed on the ticket into its conditions of carriage [2], and United Airlines' MileagePlus rules let the airline change award levels, availability and restrictions at any time [6].

Key takeaways
- A late booking is judged against two different rulebooks: the fare rules attached to a cash ticket and the award rules of the programme whose miles are being spent [2] [6].
- American Airlines' 24-hour refund window requires the ticket to have been booked at least 7 days before departure, so a booking made inside the final week does not meet that condition [2].
- United Airlines reserves the right to change award levels, limit award seats to any or all destinations and add blackout dates, with or without notice [6].
- Except as otherwise expressly permitted by United from time to time, United does not credit award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits for award travel, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money [6].
How do cash fares work for a last-minute booking?
A cash ticket carries its fare rules with it. American Airlines defines a fare as the price paid for the ticket and the rules associated with that ticket, including whether it is refundable, and its conditions of carriage incorporate the terms printed on the ticket, the published fare rules and its filed tariffs [2].
The ticket is valid only where the passenger meets the fare requirements behind it. American names dates of stay such as a Saturday night or a weekend, military status, official government business and attendance at an event as examples of requirements that can decide whether a ticket may be used, and says a ticket is not valid where those dates, purpose or status conditions are not met [2].
The free look at a new booking depends on how early it was made. American generally allows up to 24 hours from purchase for a full refund where the ticket was booked at least 7 days before departure, and the trip must be cancelled within those 24 hours of purchase [2]. A booking made inside that final week falls outside the condition as stated [2].
| Situation | What the conditions of carriage say |
|---|---|
| Refundable ticket, travel not started | The full amount of the ticket [2] |
| Refundable ticket, partly used | The value of the unused travel [2] |
| Non-refundable ticket cancelled before departure | No cash refund; the ticket is cancelled and a travel credit is issued toward future travel on American [2] |
| Any ticket bought at least 7 days before departure | Full refund if the trip is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase [2] |
AAdvantage members have a third way to pay. American announced in October 2026 that eligible AAdvantage members would be able to combine cash and miles when booking on aa.com and in the airline's app, with the feature rolling out over the following weeks [3]. The member selects flights priced in cash, sees an optional trip insurance offer at checkout, then uses a slider to choose the cash-and-miles split, after which the cost summary updates and payment is entered [3].
How does award availability work on a last-minute booking?
United Airlines sets the amount, structure, availability and process for award redemption in MileagePlus, and its rules say each of these may be modified, cancelled or limited at the airline's discretion with or without notice; the miles needed may rise or fall substantially, an award may be withdrawn, and restrictions may be imposed at any time [6]. The same rules let United add an unlimited number of blackout dates and limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations [6]. An award for travel is valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure [6].
An award ticket is not the end of the cost. United says award tickets may be subject to departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, and to the ticketing terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier operating the flight [6]. Once an award ticket is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests, and where a redeemed award is cancelled and the miles redeposited, the redeposit is subject to a service charge; some awards are not eligible for redeposit at all [6].
Except as otherwise expressly permitted by United from time to time, United does not credit award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits for award travel, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money [6].
What deadlines apply once a late ticket is bought?
Booking is only the first deadline. At American Airlines, online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, and in most cities passengers must be checked in at least 45 minutes before scheduled departure on flights within the U.S. and at least 60 minutes before departure on flights to or from airports outside the U.S.; some airports require earlier check-in [2]. Passengers must be at the gate and ready to board at least 30 minutes before departure on domestic flights and 45 minutes before departure on international flights, boarding ends 15 minutes before departure, and a seat may be reassigned if those points are missed [2].
The ticket also has a life after purchase. An unused American ticket must be used to begin travel within one year of the date it was first issued, and a partly used ticket must be completed within one year of the first completed flight, unless the ticket states otherwise [2].
Exceptions and limits
- Country-specific refund rules. Some countries have different rules about refunds, and American says it follows those rules where they apply [2].
- Tickets bought through an agency. Where a ticket was bought through a travel agency or another booking source, the refund request goes to that source rather than to American [2].
- Reservations held without intent to fly. American lists holding reservations to secure upgrades, block seats or obtain lower fares among prohibited booking practices, and says it may cancel any unused part of the ticket, refuse to carry the passenger, withhold a refund that would otherwise be due and charge for what the ticket would have cost without the practice [2].
- Fares sold in error. Where American sells a fare in error, including through computer or third-party error, it may void the ticket, refund it in full and notify the customer within 72 hours after learning of the error, or at least 24 hours before departure where the ticket was bought less than 72 hours before departure [2].
- Accounts with redemption limits. United may prohibit mileage redemption in a MileagePlus account, or suspend it for a period, after the account is opened [6].
Frequently asked questions
Can a last-minute cash ticket be cancelled for free?
Not under American's 24-hour rule as written, because that refund depends on the ticket having been booked at least 7 days before departure [2]. A non-refundable ticket cancelled before departure produces a travel credit rather than cash [2].
Can United change award availability at short notice?
Yes. United reserves the right to modify, cancel or limit award redemption levels and availability, to withdraw an award and to limit award seats or add blackout dates at any time, with or without notice [6].
Does a last-minute award ticket earn miles?
Not as a rule: except where United expressly permits otherwise, award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets bought with a combination of miles and money [6].
What happens if the airline sold the fare in error?
American may void the ticket, give a full refund and notify within 72 hours after learning of the mistake, or at least 24 hours before departure if the ticket was bought less than 72 hours before departure [2].
How late can a passenger check in for a late booking?
At American, check-in is required at least 45 minutes before departure within the U.S. and 60 minutes before departure for flights to or from airports outside the U.S., and some airports require earlier check-in [2].
