FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a purchase bonus tier?

A purchase bonus tier is a threshold in a loyalty programme's sale of miles or points at which the bonus rate changes — a higher rate once a purchase passes a set minimum, for example, or a bonus that exists only for the length of a limited promotion. The offer a member actually sees can be narrower than the advertised rate, because programmes may make bonus and promotional offers available selectively rather than to every account. [6]

Key takeaways

  • A tier is a step in the bonus, not a different kind of mile: the extra miles a tier produces land in the same account balance as miles added any other way.
  • United's MileagePlus Rules let United make bonus and promotional offers selectively available to certain members on factors that include geographic location, Premier status level and programme participation. [6]
  • Read the minimum, the cap and the exclusions before applying a headline percentage; those lines decide what a purchase actually returns.
  • Bonus miles and elite progress are separate questions: in the terms of United's 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge, bonus award miles and miles earned through non-flight activity do not count towards Premier qualification unless expressly stated. [7]

How does a purchase bonus tier work?

A purchase bonus tier is a band in a miles sale: the programme sets one or more purchase amounts and attaches a different bonus to each band, so the number of extra miles a purchase produces depends on how much is bought in a single transaction or during a single promotion. A flat bonus with no bands is a bonus, but not a tier, and a programme that sells miles at one rate is simply running an untilted sale.

Two conventions look identical in an advertisement and give different answers. The bonus may apply to the whole purchase once the minimum is met, or only to the portion of the purchase above the minimum. The table's own wording decides which is in force, so the arithmetic belongs to the table rather than to the headline percentage, and a limited promotional rate may sit on top of the tier or replace it.

Above any individual sale sits the programme's rulebook. United's MileagePlus Rules state that miles accrue in an account only when the member uses a means of accrual recognised under the programme, and that United reserves the right to establish those means, to delete or modify any or all of them, and to exclude specific types of transactions or tickets from earning mileage and Premier Qualifying Credits, with or without notice. [6] A tier table published with a sale therefore sits inside a framework the programme can change.

How do you read a miles-sale tier table?

Work through the same questions for any tiered sale. The answers live in the sale's own terms, and where a programme publishes a general rulebook, that rulebook applies on top. [6]

  • Which programme, which account? Offers can be aimed at selected members, so a bonus shown to one account is not automatically open to another. [6]
  • What triggers the tier? Find the minimum quantity, the unit it is measured in, and whether the tier is judged per transaction, per day or across a promotion.
  • Does the bonus cover the whole purchase or only the excess? This is the largest source of arithmetic error in a tiered sale.
  • Is there a ceiling? A cap on bonus miles, on total miles bought in a period, or on transactions per account limits the return on a large purchase even when the top rate looks attractive.
  • What is excluded, and what ends the offer? Taxes, fees and processing charges are often outside the qualifying purchase price, and an offer may carry a published end date, a limited quantity, or the programme's right to withdraw it.

Only once those lines are settled does the headline rate mean anything — and the miles it produces are still ordinary award miles in the account. [7]

Why can two accounts see different purchase bonuses?

United's MileagePlus Rules reserve the right to make bonus and promotional offers by United or MileagePlus Partners selectively available to certain members at any time, based on flight activity, partner activity, geographic locations, Premier status level, mileage accumulation, programme participation or other factors determined at United's sole discretion. [6]

Two consequences follow. A bonus displayed in one market or on one account is not a public price list for everyone else. [6] And where a sale runs through a partner, the partner's own terms and conditions govern the offer, with details as published from time to time. [6]

United's rules also allow change to the programme, its rules, benefits, conditions of participation and mileage levels at any time, with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of miles already accumulated. [6]

Do purchased bonus miles count towards elite status?

Treat the bonus rate and the elite-credit question as two separate lines on the same offer. Under the terms of United's 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, bonus award miles, award miles and any other miles earned through non-flight activity do not count towards qualification for Premier status unless expressly stated otherwise. [7]

Those terms also show that the answer depends on which currency a rule names rather than on the size of a bonus: within the same offer, Premier qualifying points earned on an eligible United Chase credit card can count towards the challenge requirement when they post during the challenge period and are earned by the primary cardmember. [7]

Exceptions and limits

  • Only the programme's own channel. United's rules prohibit the sale, barter or other transfer of mileage except as authorised or sponsored by United, and say that acquiring or using miles obtained by purchase in violation of the rules may lead United to apply its remedies. [6]
  • Buying, gifting and transferring are different routes. American Airlines lists buying, gifting and transferring miles together within its AAdvantage programme pages. [1] United routes transfers through its Transfer Miles Program, which carries its own terms and conditions. [6]
  • Account-level risks sit outside the tier. United's rules keep accrued mileage in the account until it is redeemed or otherwise forfeited — for instance under its prohibited-conduct provisions, applicable law, a member-requested account closure, the member's death, or a failure to respond to repeated communications about the account. [6]
  • Selective availability is a limit, not a fault. United can vary bonus and promotional offers by factors that include geographic location and Premier status level. [6]

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bonus and a bonus tier?

A bonus is any extra miles added to a purchase; a tier is a step within that bonus, attached to a stated purchase amount, so the rate changes as the amount bought changes.

Can a programme keep a miles-sale bonus off some accounts?

Yes. United reserves the right to make bonus and promotional offers selectively available to certain members at any time, based on factors including flight activity, partner activity, geographic locations, Premier status level and programme participation. [6]

Can a miles promotion change before it ends?

United reserves the right to change its programme, rules, benefits, conditions of participation and mileage levels at any time, with or without notice. [6]

Whose terms govern a bonus offered through a partner?

Partner offers are governed by the terms and conditions set by the applicable partner, with details published from time to time, and United states that it is not responsible for products or services provided by partners. [6]

Is buying miles from a reseller the same as buying from the programme?

Under United's rules, no: the sale, barter or other transfer of mileage is prohibited except as authorised or sponsored by United, and miles acquired by purchase in violation of the rules may be subject to United's remedies. [6]
