FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is the same-day departure rule?

The same-day departure rule is the access condition that lets a traveller into an airport lounge only when they hold a valid boarding pass for a flight leaving that airport on that day. It matters because a membership card or invitation is not on its own enough to get through the door: a card belonging to another person, a booking for a different date or an itinerary starting somewhere else can all be turned away at the desk, and operators word the requirement in their own way rather than following one shared script. At Priority Pass, admittance to a lounge or merchant is strictly conditional on the customer holding a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass and any additional identification the location asks for, and the same requirement extends to guests. Key takeaways

  • The condition is tied to the boarding pass, not to the membership alone: Priority Pass makes lounge admittance strictly conditional on a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass and any additional identification. [1]
  • Holding a valid card still does not guarantee entry, because the lounge decides whom to admit and capacity limits apply. [1]
  • Conditions vary by location and by route: each lounge has its own specific terms, and some European locations sit inside Schengen areas where only travellers flying between Schengen countries are admitted. [1]

How does the rule work at the lounge desk?

Priority Pass sets the documentation test in its Conditions of Use: admittance to a lounge or merchant is strictly conditional on the customer having a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass, and any additional identification the lounge or merchant may require, which can include a passport, a national identity card or a driving licence, and customers must meet the same test for their guests. [1]

A “means of access” covers the Priority Pass card, the digital membership card, an eligible payment card, a QR code, a barcode or another form of access confirmed in writing by Priority Pass. [1] A photograph of a means of access, or the card number on its own, will not be accepted as a substitute for the card itself. [1] The means of access is non-transferable and may only be used by the named customer, and only one means of access may be presented per visit. [1]

Guests are handled as part of the same check: they must register and enter the lounge or merchant location at the same time as the customer. [1] Each lounge also carries its own specific terms, which are set out in that lounge’s description on the Priority Pass website or app, and using the lounge means accepting those terms. [1]

Which flights can you use a Priority Pass lounge for?

Priority Pass describes its network as 1,900+ airport lounges and experiences and says members can fly with any airline and in any class and still use the lounge. [6] The programme presents lounges as a way to step out of the busy departure terminal, refuel before boarding and use the time productively before a flight. [6]

That description is written around travel that starts at the airport where the lounge sits: Priority Pass says members can enjoy time in the lounges on both the outbound and the return journey, and it addresses travellers flying domestically as well as internationally. [6] Both of those journeys begin with a departure from the airport in question, which is the moment the boarding pass requirement bites. [1]

Does the rule change with the airport or the route?

It can. Some Priority Pass lounges and merchants in Europe are located inside designated Schengen areas of an airport, which means access is only provided to those locations when the customer is travelling between Schengen countries. [1] That is a route test layered on top of the boarding pass test, so a traveller holding a perfectly valid boarding pass for a flight outside the Schengen area would not meet it at those specific locations. [1]

Two further details differ from place to place rather than being fixed by the programme. Access for children varies according to each lounge’s or merchant’s own policies and is at that location’s discretion. [1] Some lounges also require a payment on top of the customer’s entitlement, and that transaction is handled by the lounge itself. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Admission is discretionary. Providing a means of access does not guarantee access or continued access, and entry is subject to capacity restrictions. [1] Priority Pass says it has no control over whether a lounge admits a customer, how many people are allowed in at any time, opening and closing times, or how long a customer may stay. [1]
  • Behaviour and dress still apply. Use of a lounge is subject to the customer, guests and children behaving and dressing in line with that location’s terms, and anyone who does not comply may be asked to leave. [1]
  • Visit caps. Priority Pass, a payment card provider or another organisation may limit the number of times a means of access can be used to enter a lounge within a time period and within the same arrival or departure location; where a card provider sets that limit, the customer is notified by the provider. [1]
  • Per-visit charges. Lounge and merchant visits are subject to a per person, per visit charge, and where applicable that includes accompanying guests, billed at the rates attached to the customer’s membership plan. [1]
  • No protection for a missed flight. Lounges have no obligation to announce flight information, and Priority Pass is not liable for a loss arising from a customer or guest failing to board. [1]
  • Which version of the terms applies. The Priority Pass Conditions of Use are effective as of 26 March 2026 and apply to use of the programme from that point forward. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a boarding pass to get into a Priority Pass lounge?

Yes. Admittance is strictly conditional on a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass and any additional identification the lounge or merchant may require. [1]

Can someone else use my Priority Pass membership to enter a lounge?

No. The means of access is non-transferable, may not be used by anyone other than the named customer, and only one means of access can be used for each visit. [1]

Can you bring guests into a Priority Pass lounge?

Guests are welcome in the network, but they must register and enter the location at the same time as the customer, and per person, per visit charges may apply to them depending on the membership plan. [6] [1]

Why can a lounge refuse entry when the membership card is valid?

Because admission is at the lounge’s discretion and subject to capacity, and Priority Pass does not warrant that access or facilities will be available at the time of a visit. [1]

What identification might a lounge ask for?

The lounge or merchant may ask for additional identification beyond the membership and boarding pass, which can include a passport, a national identity card or a driving licence. [1]
