FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is trip interruption coverage?
Trip interruption coverage is a travel insurance benefit that responds after the traveller has already left home, when a covered event cuts a trip short and the remaining itinerary has to be abandoned or rebooked. On the American Express Platinum Card in the United States, cancellation and interruption are combined in one benefit, Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance, which can reimburse non-refundable expenses when a covered reason cancels or interrupts a round trip paid for entirely with an Eligible Card. Key takeaways
- Interruption cover deals with a journey that has already started; cancellation cover deals with a journey that has not begun. In general terms it is a reimbursement benefit, not a payout on departure.
- The American Express Platinum Card in the United States lists Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance as a single benefit for a trip that a covered reason cancels or interrupts. [4]
- That US benefit is limited to up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per Eligible Card in a 12 consecutive month period, as of 18 October 2026. [4]
- The UK Platinum Card page describes worldwide travel insurance for trips up to 90 days and states that certain insurance benefits depend on paying for the trip with the card; the full details sit in the Platinum Insurance terms. [5]
What does trip interruption coverage pay for?
An interruption is an event that stops a journey in progress. The traveller has already flown out or checked in, and something covered by the policy means the rest of the itinerary cannot be used, or the traveller has to go home early. The costs that follow are not usually the price of the original ticket: they are the fare for a replacement journey home, prepaid hotel nights that will now go unused, prepaid transfers or excursions, and the fees charged to change a booking.
That is why interruption cover is normally written as a reimbursement benefit. The traveller pays the new costs, keeps the receipts, and claims back the part that nobody else will return. The label alone says very little, because the trigger, the payment conditions and the ceiling are all fixed in the benefit document behind the card or policy.
On the American Express Platinum Card in the United States, the benefit is described as reimbursing non-refundable expenses purchased with the same Eligible Card when a covered reason cancels or interrupts a round trip purchased entirely with that card. [4] Coverage is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company, and terms, conditions and limitations apply. [4]

Which card terms apply, and where do the conditions live?
Card travel protection is written market by market. The American Express Platinum Card sold in the United States and the one sold in the United Kingdom are separate products with separate documents, so a rule read on one page cannot be carried across to the other.
The UK Platinum Card page describes comprehensive worldwide travel insurance for the cardmember and supplementary cardmembers, including their partners and dependent children under the age of 25, for trips up to 90 days. [5] It states that some insurance benefits depend on use of the card, and that the card must be used to pay for the trip or item in order to access certain insurance benefits. [5] Medical assistance and expenses cover does not apply at 70 years of age or above, and pre-existing medical conditions are excluded unless they appear on the accepted conditions list. [5] For the full details of the travel protection benefits available, the page points to the Platinum Insurance terms. [5]
The practical consequence is that the product page is a summary and the insurance terms are the document that decides a claim. The same card also lists Trip Delay Insurance and Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance as separate protections, each with its own wording. [4]
How does interruption cover interact with an airline refund?
An airline refund and an insurance claim are two different transactions. When a flight is cancelled or a trip is cut short, the airline and the hotel may return part of what was paid; interruption cover then looks at what remains. The American Express US description follows that logic by tying reimbursement to non-refundable expenses purchased with the same Eligible Card, rather than to the original value of the booking. [4]
Because of that wording, the starting point for a claim is the amount nobody else will return: the unused prepaid nights, the non-refundable fare, the cost of the replacement journey. [4] The mechanics of claiming sit outside the card page; the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada sets out the general steps for making an insurance claim and what to do if a claim is refused. [7]
Exceptions and limits
- Covered reason only. The US benefit responds when a covered reason cancels or interrupts the trip, and terms, conditions and limitations apply to the description. [4]
- Whole trip on the card. The described scenario is a round trip purchased entirely with an Eligible Card, and the reimbursable expenses must have been purchased with the same Eligible Card. [4]
- Delay is separate. Trip Delay Insurance is listed as its own benefit: when a covered reason delays a round trip paid for entirely with an Eligible Card by more than 6 hours, certain additional expenses purchased with that card can be reimbursed, up to $500 per trip and a maximum of 2 claims per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive month period. [4]
- Trip length and age on the UK card. The UK worldwide travel insurance is described for trips up to 90 days, medical assistance and expenses cover does not apply at 70 years of age or above, and pre-existing medical conditions outside the accepted conditions list are excluded. [5]
- Refused claims. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada publishes the steps for making an insurance claim and what to do if a claim is refused. [7]
Frequently asked questions
Is trip interruption the same thing as trip cancellation?
Not in timing: cancellation concerns a trip that has not started, interruption concerns one that has. On the American Express Platinum Card in the United States they are sold together as one benefit, Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance, which responds when a covered reason cancels or interrupts the trip. [4]
How much does the US Platinum Card benefit pay?
Up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per Eligible Card in a 12 consecutive month period, as of 18 October 2026. [4]
Do I have to pay for the trip with the card?
For the US benefit, the description covers a round trip purchased entirely with an Eligible Card, with the reimbursable expenses bought on the same card. [4] On the UK Platinum Card, some insurance benefits depend on using the card to pay for the trip or item. [5]
Does interruption cover also pay for a long delay?
They are listed separately. Trip Delay Insurance appears as its own benefit with a $500 per trip limit and a maximum of 2 claims per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive month period. [4]
Who actually pays the claim?
For the benefits described on the US Platinum Card page, coverage is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company. [4] For the UK card, the Platinum Insurance terms hold the full details. [5]
