What does the Amex Platinum Card cost and how do you earn points?
American Express publishes the following annual fees for the US consumer card. [1]
| Card | Annual fee |
|---|---|
| Basic Platinum Card | $895 [1] |
| Each Additional Platinum Card | $195 [1] |
| Companion Platinum Card | No annual fee [1] |
The card carries no preset spending limit, so the amount a cardholder can spend adapts to factors such as purchase, payment and credit history; American Express says it may still assign a specific spending limit to an account in some cases and will notify the cardholder if it does. [1]
Earning is published in three bands. [1]
| Purchase category | Points | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | 5X | Booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year [1] |
| Prepaid hotels | 5X | Booked through American Express Travel [1] |
| Other purchases | 1X | Terms and limitations apply [1] |
Underneath the card's own rates, the Membership Rewards programme awards points for eligible spend on an enrolled card, and excludes cash advances and cash equivalents including gift cards, person-to-person transactions, balance transfers, traveller's cheques, prepaid card purchases and reloads, fees and interest, and purchases paid for with points at the point of sale. [5] Bonus categories depend on merchant codes, and American Express says a purchase may not earn additional points where a merchant sells or processes the transaction through a third party, or where the purchase is made through a third-party payment account or digital wallet. [5]
Points are earned only when the minimum amount due is paid on time; if it is not, points accrued during that billing period are not earned, though they can later be requested after the balance is paid, for a fee per billing period, within 12 months. [5]
Which statement credits and lounge access does the card include?
American Express lists the following annual credits for the US Platinum Card. [1]
- Hotel Credit: up to $600 a year, paid as up to $300 in statement credits semiannually on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel. [1]
- Airline Fee Credit: up to $200 per calendar year on incidental fees, such as checked bags, in-flight refreshments, flight-change fees, lounge day passes and pet-kennel fees, charged by one selected qualifying airline. [1]

Lounge access runs through the Global Lounge Collection, which American Express says gives access to Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying on an eligible Delta flight, Priority Pass membership with enrollment, and other select partner lounges. [1] The card also carries no foreign transaction fees. [1]
On the hotel side, American Express lists Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, complimentary enrollment in Hilton Honors Gold status, and Leaders Club Sterling status from The Leading Hotels of the World with enrollment required. [1]
Insurance benefits are listed with limits: trip delay cover reimburses certain extra expenses up to $500 per trip, with a maximum of two claims per card in 12 consecutive months, where a covered reason delays a round trip paid entirely with an eligible card by more than six hours, and trip cancellation and interruption cover runs to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per card in 12 consecutive months. [1] Car rental loss and damage cover is secondary cover, excludes liability, and is not available for vehicles rented in Australia, Italy and New Zealand. [1]
How does Membership Rewards transfer access work?
The card page states that American Express offers the opportunity to transfer points to 20 airline and hotel travel partners. [1] The programme terms set the mechanics: the rewards account must be linked to the partner loyalty account first, and that partner account must be in the cardholder's name or the name of an Additional Card Member whose Additional Card was issued at least 90 days before linking. [5]
In most cases a transfer needs a minimum of 1,000 points and only in multiples of 1,000, and the rate varies by partner. [4] [5] American Express says transfers typically process within 48 hours, though some programmes delay posting to the partner account, and that a completed transfer cannot be reversed or converted back into Membership Rewards points. [4] [5] Points sent to a US airline frequent flyer programme carry an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99. [5] If an airline loyalty programme stops participating, American Express may limit transfers to it before participation ends, at not less than 100,000 points. [5] Transfer is unavailable where the only product linked to the rewards account is a Legacy Card. [5]
Alternatively, points can be used through Pay with Points at checkout with participating brands or through American Express Travel, subject to the programme terms. [5] Points do not belong to the cardholder and cannot be transferred to someone else's rewards account or sold. [5] For the vocabulary around moving points between programmes, see the frequent flyer terms glossary.
What are the limits and conditions?
- Enrollment. Several benefits require enrollment before they pay: the Resy credit, the Digital Entertainment credit, the lululemon credit, the Oura Ring credit, the Equinox credit and Priority Pass membership. [1]
- Hotel Credit scope. It applies only to prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel, and The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. [1]
- Airline Fee Credit scope. One qualifying airline is selected, American Express relies on airlines to submit correct information on airline transactions, and it advises calling if a qualifying credit has not appeared after eight weeks; qualifying airlines are subject to change. [1]
- Geographic and partner limits. Uber Cash applies to rides and orders in the US, the Resy credit to qualifying US Resy restaurants, and the lululemon credit to US retail stores excluding outlets and to lululemon.com. [1]
- Transfer limits. Transfers are irreversible, the partner programme's terms apply once points arrive, and American Express says it has no control over those programmes and is not responsible for telling cardholders about partner changes to award levels, blackout dates or capacity controls. [5]
- Losing points. Cancelling or unenrolling the last product linked to a rewards account means losing all points immediately; if American Express cancels a product the points are lost too, except that a cancellation for inactivity gives 90 days to use them, points are not lost where a product is cancelled by accident, and New York Card Members can keep using points for 90 days in certain scenarios. [5] Points awarded on ineligible purchases may be removed. [5]
- Delta Sky Club. The 10 visits are limited to when the cardholder is flying on an eligible Delta flight. [1]
